I hate them in most cases. Except if its a situation where a character had bad experiences and did bad things and then changed his ways or whatever

Of course. I hate moralfagging with a passion. I do not watch fiction to be pandered about how it's "bad" to kill a mass murderer. That's the typical leftist brainrot mindset that's destroying the real world we live in. Instead, we need more "anti-hero" protagonists that are not afraid of dirtying their hands for the benefit of the majority (like Lelouch from Code Geass). That kind of thing resonates more within me than an effeminated, sanitized and sterilized MC who believes in some utopian moral values that serve nobody in the real world.

Hmm, for me, it heavily depends on the individual situations.

Scenario A: A character with a no-kill policy in a peaceful setting where there is no valid reason to kill anyone.
I would be perfectly okay with this character having a no-kill policy.

Scenario B: A character with a detonator is getting ready to bomb a thousand innocent lives because he feels like it, and the no-kill policy character refuses to kill the villain character no matter what, but also doesn’t offer an alternative solution.
I definitely wouldn’t view this particular no-kill policy character positively lol.

It kind of depends on the character and circumstances of that character, but usually I do not have a problem with it.

Nah Chisato is best girl. also Dr. Tenma was great too. Complete edgelord MCs are more likely to ruin my experience tbh

It depends on the character and why they are adverse to violence. Like Tenma from Monster, it's believable that he just has an aversion because it's a big deal, especially for him as a doctor to take a life. If it's just getting on a self righteous tangent, that it's wrong to take life in any circumstance, that is where I start to raise eyebrows.

The reality is that even in series I like, such as Vinland Saga, Thor's philosophy only works cause he has superhuman anime powers. Pacifism isn't actually at odds with that period, though the ending would be less, I am a badass who can unrealistically defeat bad guys with my fists and more I am okay being martyred, rather than take life.

It's hard for me to conceptualize a character getting constantly into violent situations, and being able to think they can self righteously avoid murdering someone. You don't really have a luxury to feel that way, in those situations, unless victory and survival is not your ultimate goal.

Japanese writers can often over pontificate their objection to war and violence to a self righteous degree, that it can be quite annoying and not immersive in the slightest. Usually it doesn't totally bother me, cause at the end of the day I am watching Japanese cartoons, largely aimed at teens.

Vash is one of more likable characters with the no kill policy

First character that popped into my mind after I read the thread was Naruto, and it always bothered me that he didn't want to kill anyone especially since everyone became weird after becoming good

Gaara took a massive spike down after the talk with Naruto, Zabuza was done cool but

Seems only a majority of male protagonists get dogged for being pacifists in Japanese Anime. Like the example Users have been pointing out about Vash, I have never seen someone like Rushuna Tendou be met with the same level of criticism.

Either way a do 'no-kill policy' doesn't really bother me as long as the Anime is entertaining to watch. I think I would get annoyed with an MC that goes around on a mass genocide killing spree as much as I would get annoyed by a MC that goes around not killing at all if the Anime was just unbearably unentertaining or unamusing to watch.

I think everyone should have a "no kill" policy, including villains.

Often. Usually it's because the main character still routinely throws themselves (and their associates or friends) into life-or-death fights against people who do not share their policy of "no killing", meaning the main character has arbitrarily adopted a crippling handicap that endangers them and those they care for. Very rarely are characters with a "no kill" policy absolute pacifists, because they usually don't have the liberty of adhering to such a philosophy.

Personally, I prefer main characters who have no qualms killing those who deserve it, provided they have no future utility that pragmatically compensates for the risk that comes with sparing them; however, I try not to let it influence my scoring either, unless the decision is particularly outrageous.

I hate these kind of characters. They need to be put before a firing squad, especially Tenma and Thorfinn.

Nope. I like Batman and Superman and the no kill policy can lead to interesting moral dilemmas (although these characters have been around for so long the dilemmas have been done to death)

Depends, it can be done right specially in cases were the topic is treated with its consequences or as a result of the MC killing so many people that it just have a break down.

But sadly most of the time is done poorly: the MC will refuse to kill someone, and then something happens that kills the opposing force solving the problem and cleaning the Mc hands

People also forget that Vash has *Immense* power and could destroy that entire planet if he really went off the deep end. Which is another reason for his peaceful nature & why Knives wants to break it down.

Yes and no.
I hate it, when "cool" action movies and shows portray killing as something you do with a cringe one-liner and no care in the world, and it's portrayed as normal.
But I hate it as much, when someone is in self-defense mode or is supposed to defend others, yet they wouldn't even think about killing another person. They rather let the villain going on a killing spree than actually doing something about it.

Anyone who dislikes a character because they won't kill other people is being extremely weird. (And I'm not sure why being main character rather than a side character should alter this at all.)

After watching Plunderer, I have an even greater dislike of no-kill policy characters. Seriously, whoever though that "An army that does not kill" was a good concept for an anime. That show really pissed me off and was a huge disappointment.

do 'no-kill policy' MCs get on your nerves?

Not At All.
i happened to have grown up on a rather steady diet of 1980's/1990's Hollywood Slaughter-A-Thons.

That in Mind; you can understand that i've seen plenty enough Fetishized Murder for a lifetime,
and that i can generally do happily going forward without seeing any more...
