That was an emotional rollercoaster! Is there any more like this? Key features I enjoyed:

-Based on a critically acclaimed, popular manga so I know the source material is good
-Mature themes and relatable characters
-Great soundtrack
-Realistic relationships and characters

Things I didn’t like:
-Anime does not have a proper conclusion and never will unless the author stops being sick

Is there anything else that is as good with love stories as Nana or is everything else just cringey highschool stuff? Would be nice if there was something like Nana but had a good ending that wasn’t just depressing.

You basically want josei manga adaptations, and those barely exist.

You just described why most people who use to love Shoujo romance in the 90s and 2000s suddenly switched to consuming Korean Dramas in the early 2010s.

If you are simply wanting more Japanese Anime with Mature themes, realistic relationships, and a story more grounded in reality that isn't filled with some fluffy happy outcomes, "Welcome to the N.H.K." was released around the same time period and is highly more of a realistic of a story in my opinion than anything "Nana" offered because not many people can really relate to being in love triangles with Rock Stars nor being in love triangles at all. Specifically when it comes to a majority of people who consume vast amounts of Japanese Anime.

The main key difference between a story like "Nana" and "Welcome to the N.H.K." is that "Welcome to the N.H.K." is not a true romance drama.

@ColourWheel Welcome to the NHK is good, I just don't get why it's tagged romance...

"Welcome to the N.H.K." mostly had unrequited romance elements which I suspect is why it has romance tagged to it on MAL.

Nope, there is no other anime like Nana. It's crazy how such a simple premise (romance with adult characters handled with the appropriate level of maturity) managed to be unparalleled in the world of anime. I'm sure there are plenty of similar josei manga, but they never got an anime adaptation.

@Nirinbo Weird because there are a lot of adult woman getting into anime with netflix and all, my mom included, and they want romance but all the anime romance is teengers or is just so bad that it isn’t worth watching like Golden Time or Rent a Girlfriend.

@Krystopher Even seinen targeted shows are a minority, and the anime fandom in general is overwhelmingly male.

Josei manga are way more likely to get a live action adaptation (J-drama) rather than an anime: it's much cheaper since there's no action or fantasy, just people standing still or walking around Tokyo. I disagree with this logic (I mean that a live action cannot replace the anime style), but I'm not the target audience.

If we talk about seinen, at least there's still something considered worth adapting into an anime (any fantasy, like Dungeon Meshi for example), since a good live action would require a stupidly high budget that a Japanese production could never afford.

Watch the first two episodes of Nana long time ago. Didn't like the main character at all. That was the first anime I dropped if I am not mistaken but I want to give that anime another chance someday.

You should check out this anime.

I don't know if you will like it or not but it's one of my favourite romance anime.

@Nirinbo that makes perfect sense really, I already read Manwha that had a k-drama adaptation.

So you enjoyed the emotional depth and realistic portrayal in Nana and if you’re looking for more anime with happy endings, you might want to explore other romance series. While not directly similar to Nana, they offer satisfying conclusions like Paradise Kiss Created by the same author, Ai Yazawa. It’s set in the same universe as Nana and offers drama, romance, and a satisfying ending.

You have watched peak my brother and/or sister. There's no other anime like NANA. The author has been in hiatus for a long time like 14-15 years. Have you read the manga @Krystopher

I recommend Candy Candy, though I wouldn't say it's like Nana.

I've watched a lot of romance anime and no, to the best of my knowledge, there's nothing quite like Nana. It sure hits you in the gut. I watched it exactly a year ago and it stayed with me for ages.

Someone suggested Chihayafuru, but if you're looking for romance stay clear is my advice. It's one of those shows that takes 60 eps for the romance angle to even get going and it's still unresolved after over 70 eps and will likely never get an anime conclusion. It has amazing character writing and dialogue, but they tease the romance very early and then it goes nowhere for the next 50 or so eps.

There are a bunch of workplace romance anime like Wotakoi, or Working, but they're not on the level of Nana. If you like historical shoujo then I'd suggest Rose of Versailles, that one had amazing romance and not a high school in sight. Or Spice & Wolf. Another mature romance is Planetes.

I forgot about Sign of Affection, from a couple seasons back, that had a similar vibe to Nana, without the rock stars ofc, very shoujo-esque if you know what I mean, fluffy scarfs and perfect men, and good ending.

And ofc, the original romance soap opera, Maison Ikkoku, adult cast and heartfelt comedy. Plus wonderful 80's vibes, if you like older anime.

Nodame Cantabile (2007) is mature, but more comedic than Nana. It used to be really popular, yet over the last decade sunk into obscurity. The first season is brilliant, then it slowly loses quality in the sequels.

I personally haven't seen Nana, but I recommend Nodame Cantabile, too. It's a great romance anime, although it's not as dramatic as Nana I'm sure. But the romance is there and it's very enjoyable

This, a roller coaster? try the manga, where the fun begins! It gets a lot more mature and interesting. Yes this is not finished (and will probably never be) but it was really on its last steps, just a few chapters were left. A lot of things happens and it really deserves to be read!
