This was well deserved. Frieren blew me away with its story telling, character development, world building, and fantasy elements. It also helped that the first episode displayed the passage of time in a very compelling and emotional way. I was hooked from the start. It was truly a breath of fresh air to watch. Absolutely a magical experience.

People question why isekai is popular and then put a generic fantasy as the highest rated anime of all time.

It was the right anime at the right time for sure overrated yes if this would’ve came out during jujutsu Kaisen season 2 run, you would hear nothing about it
@boqjyb-Bofrux-mi i think it came out during JJK's S2 2nd cour and people preferred Frieren

Demon Slayer having so much presence on Kitsu is nasty

Why though? It’s a great series that’s fun to watch and is the most visually pleasing. Conversely, the fact that Frieren is number 1 on each of these sites screams vote manipulation. Not saying it’s not a good series (I don’t care much for it tho) just saying there’s no such thing as an objectively number 1 show.

@Animillion I don't want to sound like I hater because I agree that the color palette is one of the prettiest in anime, the story is just objectively not as deep as other anime series that are often ranked above it. It also looks like there are some Demon Slayer recaps that are highly rated above almost every other series which is insane.

I agree there is no objective number 1 show, but having EVERY entry of a series scored at the top should scream vote manipulation to you more, not having the hottest new series be at the top lol

@Okeanix bros a bigger hater than kendrick lamar lmao. Why are you this dedicated to arguing how bad Frieren is? You can have your own opinion but don't obsessively shove it down people's throats🤡

@TransferUser bruh, am I seeing correctly? the more reliable website you sent has ratings based on 3-5 thousand votes? XDD does that mean it's more credible than MAL with 400,000 and less susceptible to your imaginary vote manipulations?

Vote manipulation means more accounts, since the way you do it is by making a bunch of accounts that all vote highly for a specific title.
Based on Blu-ray sales in Japan there's a hardcore audience for anime that numbers around 15k to 20k users.

You can see that reflected in the 16k votes that Steins;Gate got.
Frieren on the other hand has about 500 votes, which checks out, since all the Blu-rays aren't even out, yet.

@TransferUser confidently say huh? So you should probably have some undeniable facts that prove your statement. Could you share them? Because “i have never seen something like this happen” and “well there is this website where it didnt happen” dont sound like something you that should make you feel confident about that.

The way new titles get into top lists takes time, since the percentage of people within the fandom that watch all anime as they air is astonishingly low. The Blu-rays for Frieren aren't even all out (will be by 17th July 2024), so compared to the total number of anime fans, few people have seen it at this point.

Older titles had more time to aggregate votes, so even if a new anime is really good, it will take a couple of years for it to be seen by all the anime fans.

For Frieren to get to the top within multiple anime sites this fast, the only possible explanation is vote manipulation.
There is no way to organically have enough people see the anime and vote to make this possible.

It also isn't reflected in Japanese top lists.
Here's another one of those: https://sakuhindb.com/anime-ranking/
Frieren is currently rank 1251 on that one.

@TransferUser Alright, English is my third language, so sorry if you don’t understand something in advance.
What blu rays are you talking about, this is an international website and others mentioned in the post aswell, how will blu rays even affect them to the point when it matters? Do you unironically believe people worldwide that watch anime are sitting there waiting for blu rays to come out to give a rating for an anime? I can speak for the country i live in and i assure you, nobody gives a damn about blu rays, many dont even know wtf is that and just rate things.
About the quantity of votes. Frieren is not even the first anime that gets this amount of members and voters, the only difference is the rating itself not the quantity of the votes. For the amount of people hyping up this series the amount isnt even that high.

This doesnt even mean anything or contradict the rating frieren has, yes thats right, and the rating will change, just not dramatically, because the ammount of votes is already high

I've been checking the toplists of various anime sites for over a decade now and can confidently say that the only way for this to be possible is due to vote manipulation, as there were never any titles that made appearances in more than three sites' Top 10s. By the way, another title that achieved a similar result is Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, which also likely only got there due to vote manipulation.

The Japanese site anikore always had the most plausible selection of top titles compared to everyone else: https://www.anikore.jp/pop_ranking/

If you were wondering, Frieren is rank 168 over there.
@TransferUser Did you know that just using previous performance to gouge future performance is not a good way to asses this.

well... this doesn't mean that Frieren is the best anime of all time because they are just some random shitty websites

The Japanese Blu-rays for the show.
I always wait for them before I watch an anime since the Blu-ray will be the best possible version of it. They tend to fix things which is why many fans wait.

The way toplists work is that they take into account absolute number of votes. So for a highly rated new anime to overtake a highly rated older anime it first needs to aggregate enough votes. The idea being that an anime that has one vote that has a rating of 10.0 is surely not better than an anime that has a thousand votes and a rating of 9.35.

The exact numbers are different under the hood for every site, but what stays the same is that a new show first needs to accumulate a bunch of votes, which is why it took FMA:B a number of years to climb to the top spot and it didn't even manage to do this across more than two sites.

A new anime reaching the top before enough people even had the chance to watch it just screams vote manipulation.

@TransferUser I can literally copypaste my previous response to this one and it will fit fine. Believe what you will man, you still didnt find a single factual reason why something “screams vote manipulation”

e. MAL community data

e.g. Questioning the score/ranking/character favorite counts
e.g. Saying that series X should have a higher/lower score/count

While the thread itself aimed more to report and share the scores across multiple scoring platforms the result was a scoring discussion and whether the title was overrated.
