@deg It didn't used be the case. While it did take breaks those were short but then it started taking long breaks at the start of last year. I think author has health issues?

No return date announced? That's worrisome. I hope the author's okay.

What health issues, the author and writer combo are most likely working and/or assisting on projects related to Frieren but unrelated to the comic itself (more anime to come, spin-offs like the novel recently released etc.).

@Avvenirista It was just a speculation given authors usually take long hiatuses for health reasons. Any source for your claim btw? Cause authors usually do the things u mentioned while continuing the serialisation and don't take indefinite hiatus for it.

@MegamiRem
Putting on hold a series multiple times for health issues always comes with a notice from the magazine/publication and for Frieren this has never been the case.
We know that at least one of the them (the artist) worked directly on the TV anime by providing artwork so I'll say it's safe to assume that the other one also worked on the project.
Considering that the TV anime is filled with miniscule details and extended scenes I'd say that the author was directly and extensively consulted by the anime staff for a longer period of time and was consequently involed in the production of the project.
Now add to this the incredible success of the TV anime and Shogakukan prossibly preparing an onslaught of new Frieren media and the sense that I'm getting is that the continuation of the main comic is slowing (halting) down again because the duo is needed to work and give their seal of approval on other Frieren projects ithat right now are in the oven.

This makes sense. Even if the anime is popular authors still have to promote their work as well to keep their audience.

@Avvenirista Taking a short break once in a while would make sense for this but taking long breaks for months, several times, idk. The manga was in break more than half the time since the begining of last year. Anyway anything we say will be speculation and unless they confirm the reason anything can be true. Ultimately fact is it's on break and manga readers aren't getting chapters.

@MegamiRem
No, taking just a few short breaks wouldn't make sense for the kind situation that I'm speculating is happening behind the scenes.
What I'm saying is that it's highly possible that that last year Frieren only appeared in 19 issues of Shonen Sunday precisely because the creative minds behind it were also involved in the creation of the anime adaptation and so had less time to work on the comic itself, and I think the same thing might be happening again now that Frieren has multiple unannounced projects in the pipeline.

@Avvenirista Well could be the case, like I said no confirmation so anything could be happening. I'm just hoping the author is healthy and we get the manga back soon. I'm just worried is all and also waiting months for new chapters is painful too.

Well, we do know that the last big break at the beginning of last year was because they worked with the preproduction team of the anime and provided story beats and concept drawings for it. Its possible after the big success of the anime that they want to get a second season going as fast as possible and the manga side will provide support again for a few months.
I mean, the popularity of the manga exploded with the anime so it would make sense to make sure the next anime season will be equally succesfull.
Of course all that could just be wishful thinking on my part and it has nothing to do with a second anime season.
There is currently no evidence for either.

I'm actually convinced that the author is talking a break to work with the production team on the second season, but maybe i'm coping hard

it has always had long breaks between chapters so this sort of thing is expected
it’s all meta meant to enhance your immersion, force you to see long periods of time the way Frieren sees it

I like to think it's because of the anime. Second season may be in devolpment and the authors might be involved. In the worst case it's due health problems.

@Zarutaku Studios do not make a second season when there is material. The point of anime productions is to sell manga and such. Why would you adapt the entire manga and expect someone to buy the next volumes when there isn't one?

They only make a second season when the material for a third season is already close to being finished or when they are sure it will be finished when season ends.

I see, guess that's why complete adaptations don't exist. 🙃

@Zarutaku Complete adaptations like Attack on Titan when it's split into 3 parts in final season and people forced to buy manga to avoid spoilers yes.
