Back then distributors and tv stations did not know any better and marketed anime meant for teens and up with complex topics and characters to kids instead. This lead to traumatic experiences for many young viewers, myself included. Add also that age ratings were non-existent. Some titles that pop in my mind: Robotech Captain Harlock TV and movie Area 88 Andromeda Stories Future War 198X Locke the Superman |

Looking at the sub version of Yugioh, i am genuinely surprised they were able to make it as kid friendly as they did. A series with death, erotic outfits and bondage themes (Looking at you, Harpie Lady!), and torture games straight out of a Saw Movie. It was a real shock to me. |
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine. We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by |

Re-Birthday it's very sad, features heavy bullying and even a suicide attempt! Definitely NOT suited for kids, I doubt they could even understand it properly. |

Revolutionary Girl Utena is something I wouldn't let a child watch, yet it was aired in Mexico as such... until episode 30 onwards which weren't aired because the series became definitely not family friendly (more than it already was). Evangelion was a similar but better known case as it aired in its entirety in most of Latin America, and even here it was broadcasted in a timeslot close to anime like Pokémon. |

Anju to Zushioumaru, in large part cause it adapts a pretty violent and dark 1910s story and tackles serious themes. No amount of cuddly animal sidekicks can change that. |

Another one, I have heard Legend of the Overfiend was aired in broad day TV, and the DVDs were sold in the children section. If you don't know what that is, it is the first tentacle horror hentai. |

Gingan Nagareboshi Gin was released on VHS in Scandinavia aimed at kids. It was censored and they did edited the episodes into 4 movies even skiping some of the episodes. But they still did include some graphic and dark scenes that were not that very family friendly. |

Really cant think of anything as it was distributed. I likely saw some anime before as a kid that was targeted to more an older audience but it never bothered me. |

Apparently Fist of the North Star had a French dub that was aimed at kids, until the executives cancelled it when the actually watched the show.
@CheesyJen 84 episodes were aired in France before the show was cancelled. Another infamous example is Kinnikuman, cancelled after 49 episodes for having a swastika-wearing character portrayed as a good guy. |

The suicide scene But it wasn't really the scene itself that traumatized me, it was my mom's graphic explanation of what suicide was and why the girl killed herself, so i guess even this doesn't count as being the anime's fault |

@DigiCat it also depended on where you lived. German TV for example was very careful what anime to pick and license. One reason violent mecha, action and sci-fi there were not so prominent in the 80s. But South European countries were a totally different landscape. Eg that movie was way too violent |

Its kind of wild that Gundam, especially Kill em All Tomino's UC timeline was aimed at kids. So many people in UC specifically died in horrible ways too like getting crushed, falling out an aircraft, and much much worse. Dude was a menace lol. It's not that old but I want to know who it was that had the bright idea to market Goblin Slayer to kids for halloween when it first came out on western streaming. |

Tiger Mask '69 had some characters really dirty in combat but I don't remember being traumatized. I remember upsetting scenes of characters being strangled or going for the eyes. There was always something going on with rigged matches with Naoto ending up being beaten up/tortured. Dunno if kids did emulate that as they do with wrestling. |

@ColourWheel sad thing was that Robocop cartoon, despite the lack of violence was closer to the humour and spirit of the original than all the movie sequels and remakes |

Maybe dragon ball z? I dunno in Germany they aired dragon ball z to kids when it's clearly a much more mature anime. Nowadays it's rated 12 by the fsk (Fsk is basically the German MPAA or television ratings)it's not hard to see why. Germany is also the exact same country where the Dragonball manga is uncensored with all the erotic stuff kept in and it's still allowed for youngsters to read it. @Lucifrost That kinda makes sense tha there's a disconnect somewhere between the two of them. The tech the Earth has in Gundamwere clearly designed to be toys vs everything Zeon has that has the look of something a military would build(function over aesthetics). Plus I do know he really despised some of the gimmicks the Gundam had like the flail and weird replace legs with the back end of a jet form |

Pretty much everything mentioned on here is suitable for kids. One of the reasons why kids are so weak mentally today and grow up to be horribly unprepared for the real world is because people keep trying to shield them from things they don't need to be shielded from. |

@IKKIsama when I saw how much erotic stuff was in the manga I was like how could they allow kids to read it? Maybe it's because im only half German (in Germany sex or erotic content in media isn't that big of a concern unless it's porn or hentai) Or I'm just sheltered. |
