This movie was actually super insufferable. And I'm not even someone who doesn't cry for sad films or sad animes in paticular but I almost despise terminal illness stories because they're done in such a way that it feels hollow. The sadness doesn't feel geniune to me because these character are absolutely unlikable for practically a majority of the film. Sakura is selfish, manipulative and obnoxious. I don't side with the fact that I'm suppose to feel bad for her for dying and putting up a strong from but secretly scared the entire time just to like her.

Haruki is a relatable introvert but feel like he has to bend his character to go along with the ride of this dying girl. It doesn't feel natural. It doesn't endear me to him nor how uncomfortable he makes him for a majority of the first half. And he keeps getting the shit end of the stick because Sakura won't explain anything to anyone so he has to feel all the attacks from her best friend and ex-boyfriend. Not to mention Sakura's opinions and views on him she projects as being the only correct view of events when it's clear that it's true that most people in the class do not like him and that Haruki is equally valid at being the way he is. Could he use friends and loved ones? Sure but it's only under her view point of that, not on his own.

Sakura's selfishness also trancensed onto Haruki for that final scene. Though Kyoko forgives him, I don't think she was warranted at all. Sakura and Haruki left her in the dark and it just feels disgustingly selfish of both of them for her to go along with their wishes. The after credits basically hintiing that they'll date just made this even worse.

Sakura's Advice: Just stop being an introvert and you'll be happier.

Haruki's Responde: If you say so.

The murder to end her life made me kind of stunned. Not in a good way. I have no words about how anti-climactic this was. And some may say, "that's life" or "it's realistic" but honestly it just makes it feel like it needed to speed up her dying and nothing really else. Maybe it's plausable but it makes for a shit movie.

To sum it up, this film felt more interested in setting up a lot of beats to pay off later and work with a dying girl and this uniterested opposite guy that she clings to because he accidentally finds out about her illness but it feels painfully hard to stay engaged or attachment to either of them. The supporting cast was equally cringe / painful to witness. The only one who felt not bad was the gum dude but I feel like he was more of a pay off for Haruki not being social and nothing else.

I'll also add that visually, this movie is bland. It feels like it's doing a worse version of a ‎Makoto Shinkai. I get wanting to make the characters not look so "anime" but you can still do that without making them look same faced and not interesting. Same with the backgrounds and entire film. The only exception was Sakura's farwell letter emulating the style of The Little Prince. But the sequence went on for much longer then it should have without making it feel stylistically fresh. Just felt more like a filter. If they would've had her in the actual character style it would've felt more geniune.

So yeah. Pretty much hated it. I gave it a 4/10 but this might get a 3/10 after I stew on it for a day.

so mixed thoughts on this, i went through 70% of the film thinking negativelly on it, on a sea of generic dense male protagonists this one managed to stood out but not in a good way, the girl on the other hand, was way to perfect, to absurd levels, she was so patient despite running on borrowed time like wth? i was noticing that time was running out yet she seemed fine so i thought it was anime once again failing up to portray the consequences of disease as usual but then the twist came up, boy what a twist, it carried the movie for me, because i cant stop thinking about it, death happens at random an no life can be taken for granted on real life, i cant decide wether its genious or just shock value, perhaps a bit of both, still a memorable ending can only do so much so

7/10

damn, the movie felt really short even though it was literally 2 hours. I really really liked the animations, at first I even thought it was CGI because most CGIs today are like this (the animations). A unique romance movie. Truly a masterpiece, lives up to its hype, maybe even more. The movie felt overall realistic both with the story and the animations. Literally, there were small animation details that most others don't include, which made the movie more realistic, or I just didn't watch enough movie's to be able to differentiate. Anyways, amazing romance anime. Didn't really cry but maybe my eyes got wet a bit.

What does that even mean? What you said and what happened isn't the same. And time has no factor into this...

Whole movie was holding back, but when Haruki started crying....

This could also have a great live action adaptation.

EDIT: look like there is already a live action adaptation.

For the most part, this seemed like a fairly typical romantic drama, with an introverted protagonist who gets dragged along by an outgoing girl who takes an interest in him, eventually causing him to be more extroverted. Both of them appeared overly flighty as well, making it difficult to get attached to their ambiguously close and noncommittal relationship.

On the other hand, the twist of having Sakura get abruptly murdered by some stabbing maniac offscreen was an intriguing subversion. You can come to terms somewhat with an anticipated death in a constant environment of a hospital or dwelling, but being killed randomly while travelling suddenly appropriates that opportunity to adjust, making the death seem that much more cruel. This death being the result of murder was never brought up again and no one expressed any sort of disdain or intent of vengeance against the murderer either, which I found absolutely bizarre.

Visuals were alright. Thought the character animation was stiff at times, but the background scenery impressed. Sakura's "diary world" being a whimsical and saccharine place was endearing too, as a contrast to the harshness of the previous scenes and representation of the optimism of her character.

To be honest, I didn't expect Sakura to die on her way to meet up with Haruki at their favorite café. I knew she was going to die because the movie opened up with her funeral scene, but I hoped it was gonna be due to her illness and after she spent many more happy hours together with Haruki.

She was truly someone that didn't deserve to die. I cried so much throughout the movie, and I'll probably cry even more when I re-watch it.
