Like maybe the subject material just feels too real to you or it hits close to home.

For me, it's A Silent Voice and Aishiteruze Baby. I dealt with bullies and borderline neglectful family and the portrayal in these shows feel too realistic.

To a lesser extent, i struggle watching romance anime because i never really had a romantic life and it just...upsets me and makes me uncomfortable. I most love magical girlfriends like belldandy from Ah My Goddess.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

Can relate to A Silent Voice on a whole other level, really can’t recommend it enough. That’s the only time I’ve cried to anime or related to it so much. (I usually don’t watch the sappy stuff)

Evangelion, Utena and Haibane Renmei hit me on very personal levels and that's part of why they're so special to me.

NHK ni Youkoso, especially at the time I watched it the first time, was so close to home it was borderline uncomfortable. Still to this day, when I've changed significantly from when I first got introduced to it about 8 years ago, it's one of, if not the most relatable anime I've watched and continues to make me feel in ways very few other anime have been able to.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho hits so hard now that I near adulthood, how it expresses the spirit of youth and inspiring it is.

Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai, well I don't need to explain.

I can't explain why, but stories which tells about a person's trauma/drama involved into losing the emotions/becoming emotionless and the story is about developing some kind of social skills or so emotions are hitting me in the deeper level, which also give a sign that I'll like the series more than the others, the prime examples of what I mean here are:

Violet Evergarden, No Game No Life Zero, Goblin Slayer S1.

Watamote
Mysterious Girlfriend
High Score Girl

there's no shortage of anime that deals with the topics of being an awkward kid in high school or of first loves. But most of them seem more influenced by other anime rather than the author's real-life experience. These three are an exception to that rule. You just can't fake it.

Personally it was Hinamatsuri, with Anzu's homeless arc.
When your homeless, yeah you do cover alot of ground, touch grass, shift through garbage looking for anything valuable.
They didn't add things like drug-use and shit like that, because ITR world, it could have gotten really ugly for her.
Especially in US, California has it pretty bad.
I wouldn't be cool with watching a rape scene involving a bunch of homeless guys, but then again... we saw what she did to the biker gang.
It went full circle.

It's gotta be Chobits. You know, the scene where he's gotta find the switch on Chii, that is just like me trying to find the on switch on my ps4 when I first got it.

Non Non Biyori for me, specifically the 1st OVA. Some of the other ones here I've also watched but this one didn't just hit home, it crashed through my window and blew out my entire bedroom.

When I was teen I remembered a scene from Chuunibyou_demo_Koi_ga_Shitai that hurt me from nowhere.
When Rika take the train to return with her family, Yuuta and Sanae stay on train station and Yuuta begin to choke Sanae without mercy about her childish fantasy.
My young self have the habits to stay in some fictions and tell himself stories to evade the reality, when I saw this it was like a thunder stroke me.

Few moment later I discover Aku no Hana (in manga) who confront me against my cringy attitude and the illusion to be really different from the rest of people, when I was just, in fact, incompetent to exchange with them

Those kind of characters make me fell uncomfortable but I always fell some compassion too, beacause I saw a part of myself in them. It's difficult to describe (even more in english for me) but I love these situation.

Sankaku Mado no Sotogawa wa Yoru as it focused very much on ghosts, spiritualism & possessions. A few of our homes were haunted at various points, and it got so bad that they needed to be cleared, and my family did some of that also.

Most relatable are : NHK and GTO. ( And when i'm talking GTO it's not about being teacher but as a whole. little stories , student's, life struggle, family problem... )

@JaniSIr @unwatched_anime
It's because season 2 is all about under pants problem/trauma that a man can have.
Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes.
It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

@satchoff The last episodes of S1 where he resolves himself to finally step out of his room moistened my eyes. All the 37 episodes have been very good.
