| I don't remember it had "panic" in the episode's name but it was crazy, all of the guys trying to steal lum's heart was terifying for her I guess. The end was cute, finally they looked like a couple. |

| Well for some reason the place I watched this at has this episode as episode 8 but on MAL it’s episode 9, good thing these episodes are stand alone stories so it’s not a big deal lol. And this was honestly a fantastic episode, it started out small and by the end it became chaos incarnate with all the heart stealing going on, that one scene of the random characters being effected was kinda messed up tho with some characters being with animals and I even noticed one with a baby lol. And man, even if it wouldn’t have felt right due to the heart stealing thing, we did nearly get a kiss at the end between Lum and Ataru only for it to be interrupted by Mendou and Onsen lol, but it’s probably better this way, quite the hilarious end to a chaotic episode. I was also happy they brought Rock the Planet back as the OP for this one, I think it’s my favorite one of the series. |
| This was a funny OVA. The art looked clean even though the animation felt a bit slow sometimes. I know this episode is disliked by some fans. @Seawolf43 describes it the best. The way Lum was just ready to kiss Megane even tho she had "maximum affection" for Ataru and also Ataru consciously throwing Lum under the bus was very out of character for both of them. And this is one of the later chapters of the manga. It might've been acceptable if this happened very early in the series. I know they had to stretch this episode since it was based on just a single manga chapter but it's like the writers forgot about the character traits of Ataru and Lum and the foundation of Urusei Yatsura and just wrote the first thing that came to their minds. That's a shame. The remake version likely won't have this issue since it's just half an episode. Edit- I was wondering if the writers of this episode even worked on Urusei Yatsura before and my suspicion was right. According to Wikipedia, the director was Yū Kō, the writer was Tatsuhiko Urahata, and the animation director was Kenji Yoshioka. None of these names popped up in any of the previous episodes. So, these people were likely new to the series. It's also funny that this was the last OVA animated by Studio Magic Bus who also worked on Movie 5 The Final Chapter and OVA 4-9. It was also the last OVA made in the 1980s as it was released in 1989. The next OVA came out in 1991 before Movie 6 Always My Darling premiered. OVA 10 is suspected to be animated by Madhouse who also animated Movie 6. And it's also the only OVA where they lost the original cels thus it couldn't be properly remastered. |

| had to watch this original version to compare to the remake half episode almost at the end of season 2... and returned there again too even if my first watch was probably just a month ago. i have no real preference, both did a fine job with their respective length also considering there was more available time and involvement as a result with Lum's Stormtroopers instead of just a scene with Ataru's best friend. How bold of Ran ending it all claiming none of this is to hold her accountable for. |
