Do you like open captions (subtitles that are burnt unto the anime) or closed captions (subtitles that you control by enabling them or disabling them at will) ?

Also what about the color do you like it plain white with shading or no shading or retro yellow or any other color ?

Also what is the language that helps you understand the dialogue better?

Japanese vs English

Retro vs Modern

Probably closed caption native language subs or closed caption Japanese subs for me, because I can choose whether to have subtitles on or not.

As for subtitle colors, depends on the genre, I like white, green, blue, orange, etc.(like the border color)

Kind of shocked you don't have an option for no subtitles in your poll because subtitles can be annoying if you understand the native language being spoken even if it's the romanization.

I just want to be able to read them, which is an odd complaint to have to make. Some streaming services have the most painful captions. Probably the worst of all is Netflix, because the medium sized font is too small for my ancient, weary eyes, and the large is like 1/4 of the screen. Captions need to have an outline option, because the black box behind them is complete overkill. If you can't see the subs in a completely white screen (oddly frequent in anime) then your font isn't acceptable.

- I like closed captions, or at least subtitles that aren't embedded into the actual video. Sometimes if I think the translation is a bit off, I'll use Subtitle Edit to change the subtitle for my own personal reference, in case I ever wanted to watch it again.

- I'm not that fussy about the colour but I quite like yellow subtitles as I'm more used to them (it's the default subtitle colour for most foreign movies airing on Australian TV). I also quite like the Kanon and Santa ones with the white text and the thick blue outline.

yellow subs are the best because I can actually see them and read faster, white subs are hard on my eyes and I can't deal with fancy fonts

I'm worried, you should use blue light blocking glasses..
That will make the subs look less white and the overall picture will have a warm tone..

There is a subber named Sametakunai who subs Jdramas, mostly those with mystery and supernatural that I like but the font size is microscopic, I've to choose a larger font size..

I don't understand why anybody would choose English if it's not their native language.

Not too small
Not too big
Like the dark border outline surrounding lighter color font because it makes things readable with the background.  Bugs me if i had to squint to try and decipher the text
Don't like the blinking text with the insert row after new quote and removes row after a quote. It literally moves the placement of the quote of the actual speaker still speaking and it's frustrating.  Old quote gets basically pushed up.
Don't like mistimed or abrupt cut off of text. Don't like the type of text to flash the entire quote for a second and then doesn't show while the characters talk.
Don't like when it suddenly stops translating for several seconds even though clearly the characters are still talking

Appreciate  the effort when they translate text in background eg Eizouken or if they do subtitles for background voice that i can hardly hear. I like the former rather than those who just leaves it not translated.
Appreciate Different colored texts if it's multiple people in the same scene speaking simultaneously
Nice grammatical structure

No meme words and glaring bad translation
So yes. Subtitles can have a dramatic effect

either Japanese subtitles or no subtitles. The advantage of Japanese subs is that you can understand what the characters are originally saying even when you're in a very noisy environment.
this is helpful if you can't hear what the characters say but don't want to crank up the volume. it's also helpful as a Japanese reading practice. otherwise, no subs all the way. having said that, most anime i watch have no Japanese subs.

of course, when a character speaks in a foreign language, they usually add a Japanese subtitle anyway (ironically, i found the Japanese subs in kiniro mosaic easier to understand than the English spoken by the characters themselves). another example being the (broken) German in World Dai Star.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Soft subs are the superior sub format.

I like English subtitles, although that is also my native language. I have watched anime with other languages of subtitles, like Thai, Italian, and German, but since I can't speak those languages it was a weird experience. Italian has enough in common with Spanish that it did somewhat help me understand the anime, but Thai was just a distraction that made it harder to understand. If I could find these anime in English sub or raw I would not have watched them the way I did.

I do prefer soft subs, partly because the resolution isn't tied to the video, but with torrenting it's also easier to find soft subs since often they're dual audio or multi sub. It also is better for taking screenshots. I prefer white subs for modern anime but retro anime I like watching with yellow subs since it feels like the more authentic experience.

I watched both dubbed and subbed (depends on the anime), but I like to use close captioning for both. I'm hard of hearing, so the captions help prevent me from mishearing what the characters say.

I don't have a preference for the colors of the subtitles don't matter to me as long as I can read it.
