WHY IS MANGA TEXT ALL PRINTED IN CAPS? BOOKS LIKE DON QUIXOTE AND HARRY POTTER USE A MIX OF UPPERCASE AND LOWERCASE LETTERS. SURELY THESE LOWERCASE LETTERS WERE INVENTED FOR A REASON. EVEN PREPUBESCENT CHILDREN KNOW NOT TO WRITE THEIR SENTENCES THE WAY THEY ARE WRITTEN IN MANGA.

THE MANGA TRANSLATORS WANTED TO BRING MANGA TO THE US. OF COURSE, THEY THOUGHT "WE MUST MAKE THIS APPEAL TO COMIC FANS" AND SO THEY LOOKED AT THE COMICS AND COPIED THE ALL CAPS.

THE NEW MANGA TRANSLATORS WANT TO TRANSLATE MANGA. ALL THE MANGA THEY HAVE READ IS IN ALL CAPS. THE THOUGHT THAT "MANGA IS TYPESET IN CAPS" HAS PERMEATED THEIR MINDS, SO THEY THINK THAT IS WHAT THEY MUST DO.

BUT WAIT, WHY WERE THE COMIC BOOKS IN ALL CAPS?

THERE ARE A FEW REASONS PEOPLE GIVE (SINCE WE CAN'T ASK THE ORIGINAL CREATORS). BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE IS: YOU CAN FIT MORE LETTERS IN, AND IT LOOKS BETTER. IF LOWERCASE LETTERS ARE USED, YOU NEED MORE SPACE BETWEEN THE LINES, TO ACCOUNT FOR LETTERS LIKE g AND y. WITH CAPS, THIS PROBLEM IS AVOIDED.

BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THAT ISN'T REALLY A PROBLEM FOR MANGA TRANSLATORS, AS MANGA WORD BUBBLES ARE TALLER THAN THEY NEED TO BE ANYWAYS, AS THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE WAS VERTICAL.

SO IN THE END, IT'S JUST TRADITION.

probably because of limited space and because, presumably, capital letters is easier to read. though dialogue being in all uppercase never bothered me back before i learned Japanese.
nowadays i only read in Japanese language so of course there's no uppercase/lowercase issue.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

I GUESS MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE IT'S EASIER TO READ THAT WAY ON DEVICES OF ALL SIZES. DOESN'T WORK WHEN THERE'S LONG WALLS OF TEXT BUT SHORT ONES WORK IN MANGA? KINDA MUST'VE COME TO THE CONCLUSION WITH TRIAL AND ERROR LIKE WITH WHITE SUBS.

If I had to guess, it's because Western comics are usually in all caps and the translators wanted to keep that going for some reason. It's never really bothered me that much.
I'm either crashing out or fujoing out.

Years I've spent reading manga and only due to this thread do I just realize that manga translations are in all caps. As yuurei_tokyo said, Western comics usually being in all caps is possibly the reason, especially when considering that back in the day a few official manga translations like Narutaru also flipped manga panels to make everything read from left to right like in Western comics.

i would argue that older people can read more easily this way rather than kids since ya know eyesight and all that.

OT: yeah i'd assume it's in line with more traditional western comics that caps are more frequently used in officially
translated and printed manga. but don't worry op, maybe when i work at a manga publisher one day i'll make it my
mission to have everything printed only in lowercase and the publishing house will just be called smol and that'll be
the aesthetic for every single manga printed under it.

I figured this late too. It is probably because it easier to read it that way, letters won't get mixed up. My second guess is that it looks prettier when all letters are caps, you don't have to worry about typesetting too much.

uhhuhhhhHHH IM REALLY LATE ON THIS BUT A PARTIAL REASON THAT WASN'T MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD WAS ALSO MOST SCAN GROUPS USE THE TYPEFACE "ANIME ACE" FOR TEXT, OUT OF TRADTION PROBABLY AND BECAUSE IT LOOKS BETTER THAN MOST OTHER FONTS. THE PROBLEM IS THAT ANIME ACE DOESN'T HAVE ANY LOWER CASE LETTERS (MOST LIKELY AS MENTIONED WAS INSPIRED BY COMIC BOOKS OR SOMETHING I DON'T KNOW) AND THE REST IS HISTORY!!!! I HOPE THIS HELPS AND I DIDN'T WASTE MY TIME WRITING THIS I AM GOING TO SHANK SOMEONE!!!!

I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE THEY USE UPPERCASE LETTERS UNTIL YOU MENTION IT HERE.

But i noticed that a few of them use lowercase letters like Sousou no Frieren for example.

If you want to know the honest to god truth, it's because I paid them all to do full caps full-time. All of this, to spite you...

My question for Japanese manga is, why don't they use periods?

This is definitely not the case. Where I live, it used to be that road signs were in uppercase, but this was changed to lowercase with standard capitalisation when studies showed that people recognised the words faster. Your comment is a lot easier to read than the all-caps one above it.
