| Remember that the story takes place in Japan during the Taishou period (1912-1926). Back then there were different dating trends. They were usually tightly connected to the sphere of arranged marriages. If we take into account how was the position of men and women back then, we might see why Mitsuri wasn't attractive for a wife for any man. Abnormally strong, weird hair, gluttony, specific behavior. She'd stand out too much at best, or outshine her husband somehow at worst (I mean, at best/worst from her hypothetical husband's point of view). It's sad when we look at it from the point of view of today's morals and standards. However, back then it was just sad reality. |
