I think it's a bit disorienting how it switches from traditional animation to rotoscoping to CGI but I don't think it looks terrible.

For the edgy people : It's ok to like a popular anime.

For the toxic only 1 anime lovers : You can like more than one anime.

The show is currently rated 9.13!! and will def finish 8.5+. I dont think people really hate the CGI.
I actually found it awesome and hate CGI or love CGI, the fact is CGI is future, you can only take advantages of evolving tech with cg fest.

The CGI was pretty solid. Alot better than AOT's, but at times it is painfully noticeable especially when you have 3d denji fighting a 2d demon.

Because it's well integrated. It's a hybrid of 2D/3D and in movement, it's seamless. Only noticeable when characters are idle which isn't often. People just hate on different animation approaches but the quality is there.
In what way is that well integrated? Shit was hella noticable and it stood out most of the time

it was pretty mid not gonna lie i. I don't like character based cgi at all, but this wasn't even like cream of the crop cg usage. Fighting scene in this episode gave a lot to be desired, but rest of the episode was a 10/10

I'm saying it again I dont hate CSM, it's only I'm surprised how people liking the CGI ,even tho there are much better out there!

As great as the CGI is it still doesn't look like good old 2D. I know why it's there and why we can't have the action in 2D but just imagine how it would look hand drawn. Still a great ep regardless.

I'm personally a little disappointed by the CGI. I mean most of Chainsaw Man's biggest moments are action scenes so I'm definitely worried that Mappa went overboard with the CG usage and it's especially jarring because Denji in his transformed state is one of the main attractions of the series so we'll see CGI Denji a lot in the future which is a bit of a letdown. Everything aside from the CGI was pretty much perfect tho.

I thought the CGI was really good, I feel like the CGI on Denji in Chainsaw form was bad most likely because it’s a dark setting. It’s still not bad CGI, I’ve seen worse but it is still very off.

Still incredibly animated though. The CGI of Denji running away from the zombies was incredible that it felt mo-capped at some points. Hopefully Chainsaw Man himself will look better going forward

CGI is not bad but it's not special either. Not something I will be early waiting to watch. I have seen much better CGI but of course they were from movies so it's expected of them to be better.

I liked some of the CG and some I didn't.

At the start, when the camera moves through the anime, it looks more like a FPS video game than an anime. Which wasn't bad.
The CGi I disliked was when Denji's chainsaw's come out, because it makes his character look off compared to his usual 2D animation. His movement becomes stiffer, he has less details and the shadows are not tracking right compared to the 2D.
And when he gets covered in blood, the blood is suddenly there, because it's just a layer on the "skin" of the 3D model.

Long story short: To me, the 3D and 2D didn't blend well.

Please don't get me wrong, I have no problem with CG.
I loved the style of Dorohedoro, have no problems with mappa's AOT and I thought the CG hollows and backgrounds in the 1st episode of Bleach: 1000YBW looked awesome.
My job is connected to the animation and game design world, so I totally get why they used CGI like they do and it makes CSM's camera movement absolutely topnotch.

I'm still super excited for Chainsaw Man!
Just don't think it's absolutely perfect like people are acting like it is.

I had two problems with this -
1. CGI - not bad but it felt little weird, but I'm sure they'll fix it in bluray.
2. Makima voice - Not that it's bad but it just doesn't fit well given her character. They should've just swapped makima and power va it'd have been super awesome.
Rest is great, I really loved the animation.

It was stiff and janky it wasn’t good luckily it had some shading thank god. Overall it was slow lacked dynamic movement besides stiff slashes. Blind fans will defend it though because unlike real fans they’ll best off anything that the name “chainsaw man” is attached too. I’d say it was around late ps2 to early ps3 level in terms of design it reminded me a lot of dragon ball z budokai tenkaiichi 3’s opening cutscene. :)

I'm also disliking the wave of "blind" fans who are and probably will continue praising this series to the moon, ignoring any genuine criticisms/flaws. No show is perfect; no studio is perfect. MAPPA has recently taken up multiple high-caliber anime projects they need to adapt. There inevitably will be some flaws in their work; will these flaws be exacerbated due their focus on other projects that requires a significant allocation of their resources to these other ventures? Only time will tell.

Like most people said, the CGI looks good, but CGI in general just doesn't scratch the same itch as some good 2D animation. I don't mind it in small bursts, but if every episode turns out to have CG fights, it'd make me pretty sad.

imo, the chainsaw cgi looks a liiiiiiiiitttleeeeee bit off to me, rest everything is top notch. MAPPA did went all out with the cgi
Piss poor shading by MAPPA lead to the CGI model not blending in with the back ground properly. Thus, the dimension are ruined and instead of looking like it's part of that world; the model ruins it by looking like 3D model which make the background look like it's all drawn into giant board instead of real setting. Like the one in old movies where the skies and mountains were painted and the depth can easily to figures. And things doesn't look big enough like it was suppose to be.

Not really.

Having seen Dorohedoro, I got used to the CGI that Mappa has done. It wasn't that bad.

I say the mix of 3D and 2D blends well here. And the dark lighting helps out a lot.
The movements were fluid and smooth. It looks good so far.

If the whole thing was 3D it would have been fine, for the most part, but it's an inconsistent art style. The compositing of the 2D and 3D also is done very poorly, focusing heavily on the 3D. MAPPA did invest in a whole new CGI sub-studio to help with their production, following in the footsteps of Ufotable, but they clearly still have a lot to learn with composition.

Here is a prime example of flawless compositing, where the character (not the environment) looks 2D, but it's actually a composite and you can see the full process. This is the goal with compositing, and maybe MAPPA already knows that and they just want to cut corners with all the anime their studio is producing by focusing on lazy 3D.

You do realize that it's still just 3D environment and 2D characters in Fate, right?
I don't wanna go on a rant about CGI and Ufotable but they're not the greatest at character and model CGI let me tell you that, don't even remind me of that water bridge scene with the skeletons or whatever... Oh and the tentacle monster in Zero... Christ that shit gives me PTSD...

Though props to them for being able to make 3D camera movements and 2D animation angles blend in seamlessly, a great feat for sure.

And I made an effort to point out where you're wrong for pointing out things...
Calling it "lazy" 3D and poorly animated is almost as bad as comparing it to the likes of Ex-Arm or even Hand Shakers.
I get all that you said but going under this thread to compare a studio that has a lot of experience with utilizing digital resources, since its founding, to save time and create polished products, with their backgrounds and camera work, to a studio that mainly utilizes computer generated imagery for models, character models to be specific, to facilitate the production of their works is just baffling.

I'd call She Hulk a lazy 3D piece of shit work, since the company behind it does have a lot of experience and money to throw into their projects, but saying that what we saw in this episode was just a bunch of people in a meeting room slacking off pressing the render button and launching the episode into the moon is a tad over the top.

"Lazy 3D", not "Lazy" 3D. As in, 3D as a means of shortcutting having to hand draw all the frames responsible for a fluid scene. Unless you really think 3D, in the anime industry, is just as much work as 2D. This also has to do with MAPPA recently opening that new department or sub-studio (forget which it was) strictly for CG, as well as their reputation as an employer.

Still don't know why you mentioned the environment. She-Hulk doesn't fit as a comparison either, as i wouldn't call that lazy at all. It's a totally different context, and a different conversation entirely when the issue with live action is mostly with CG vs Practical Effects.

imo even really good cgi looks bad in a 2d animated show. It stands out too much. The way it looks and the way it moves is just too different. I don't mind cgi for backgrounds and vehicles, but any time a full character is cgi animation, especially at the most impactful, high action moment of an episode, it completely breaks the immersion for me. I can't help but focus on it. I just wish they had saved their budget somewhere else. Considering how amazing Everything else looked I think they could have saved some money on that close up animation of a piece of bread or the fully painted incredible animation of a water droplet hitting a puddle rather than cutting all their budget from arguably the most important part of the episode. Just my opinion
