Regarding ep 6-7 thing, Tachikawa wrote the script for another anime Death Parade, which is one of my favorites, so there is a difference between a good writer vs someone who is your favorite. Moroever, Mob is ONE's work to begin with, so majority of the credit goes to him in the first place, it's just how to adapt those in episode limitations, and I vastly prefer the writing style of those Tachikawa episodes over anything Seko has done. In terms of my opinion on Hiroshi Seko, I think he is okay, if I hated his writing, I wouldn't watch any of his other stuff to begin with, but I do watch it. Just the thing is, I look into the other staff members on deciding what to watch unlike finding out a writer I like and immediately watching it or a writer I hate and just skipping it. Thanks. |
| It's decent I guess. My main issue with MP100 is that it's extremely derivative of ONE's previous work, it often feels like OPM with ESPers instead of heroes. Reigen draws some parallels with King in that both are frauds who are played out as so OP they don't even need to use their powers, both Mob and Saitama get very little payment or praise for their outstanding feats and both appear bored most of the time, though Mob generally shows more emotions. The ESP powers eventually blur the line that initially separated them from superhero powers in OPM, especially in S2 (teleporting and manipulating flora was already pushing it but hulking out the muscles of your body by using psychic powers is too out of place). The main gimmick here is that the protagonist needs to reach 100% of stress to be able to one-shot everything but ultimately it doesn't matter because he reaches that point almost every time he confronts a threat big enough to need that power and he can go from 0 to 100 almost instantly if the stress is severe enough. Even when he's far below 100% he easily one-shots most enemies anyway. Also it's yet another school setting that comes with a slew of recurring classmate characters, only a few of whom are actually relevant. Even when Mob is at his part-time job with Reigen he's still wearing school uniform so you really can't escape the school environment of this series. Another departure from OPM is all the paranormal stuff that comes with the psychic powers - ghosts, youkai and whatnot. But just like with school it's not exactly new or exciting, tons of anime shows involve ghosts, exorcism and spirit worlds and here in MP100 this aspect of the series isn't particularly engaging, I was far more excited for the fights with ESPers that already felt like reskinned superhero fights. MP100 is a good show by itself but for me it was extremely disappointing after hearing so much praise for it, seeing the high ratings and claims that this is better than OPM (which wasn't exactly a masterpiece either). Sure it does a few things better or differently, the character development arcs here go deeper on average, still not enough to consider this series an evolution from OPM in my opinion. |

I feel like you're missing the point of the show. The entire thing that sets MP100 apart from OPM and makes it such an appealing show is the fact that it's NOT about epic psychic battles at the end of the day, but a story about a middle schooler dealing with stress and trying to grow up in a healthy way. The fact that it does so through the medium of epic psychic battles is why it's such an ingenious story. The parallels between OPM and MP100 is a minor feature, not a bug, and doesn't detract from its intrinsic uniqueness one bit. |
