Seriously though, what the hell. First it was Jojo, now this. Who do they hire to make these trash ass subtitles?
It just completely takes you out of the moment when the characters are saying something and the subtitles don't match, and this is considering the fact that the only bits of japanese I know is from watching anime.
I know netflix's reputation has been down the drain lately but this isn't helping anything. I am surprised there aren't any threads talking about this issue.
Curious to know if there are any alternative subtitles.

Exactly. Even if there were no problems with subs (I didn't watch it subbed, so I can't tell what exactly was wrong with subtitles) I'd recommend English dub over original voices. English dubbing is simply great and offers the best cyberpunk experience while watching Edgerunners, to be honest.

Did you use the English CC (CC≠sub)? Because it's based on the English dub. Also eng subs adapt to sync with the eng dub if you switch to the dub. Maybe there was an error that causes the sub to not revert back to the original.

I watched the English Dub. I think it’s kind of ridiculous that there would be moments where (in the call sequences) there would be text ON THE SCREEN dictating what was being said and the subtitles wouldn’t match… and in some cases it was WAAAAAY off like I thought I had stumbled onto a YouTube bootleg by mistake the CCs were so bad.

There are 3 different english sub tracks. You want the sub of the Japanese audio. A good place to check is the first scene w David’s mother. The sub should have the word “bed” and now something about it early onset arthritis (that’s from the English dub).

Honestly this one should be watched in dub anyway so it doesn’t really matter

watched it in sub.

avoid the sub- trust me. it's probably written by an AI. some of the dialogue is translated as, for example:
when gunmen are shouting "i'll kill you" , it translates into = "[murmuring]".... what the hell?
and another example was some clear dialogue being translated into "[undeciphering]" or some nonsense like that.

those did not feel like subs done by a human. if there is a dub, watch that instead. i freaking WISH i had done that too.

Watched the first episode in subbed. It's hilarious how bad it is. After some time I stopped paying attention to the subs and started using my anime japanese knowledge which is way better than reading the actual subs.

Switching to the dub from second episode onwards

I think some of you didn't use the right sub track. I tried various languages for dub and subs and the english track was "OK" at least, and clearly not MTL (lot of good expressions used)

That's CC (Captions), not subtitles. Captions are based on English dub, while subtitle is based on JP dubs.

I genuinely have no idea why people are paying for Netflix. Machine translation is preferable to this garbage

That's CC, it's based on the English dub. CC is different than subtitle.

It's embarrassing how bad the subs are. Terrible subs are unfortunately the norm with Netflix. Is it really that hard for a multi-billion dollar company to hire and pay a decent translator?

I see a lot of people saying to watch the dub over the sub which I understand is better for the setting of this anime but that doesn't excuse the terrible subtitles and this is not the only series they messed up in. And from the looks of it netflix is probably trying to get involved in more anime as its the "new cool thing" which means we will get more of these subtitles.
Its kind of shocking that out of all the things in anime, I am complaining about subtitles in 2022.

Make sure you change your settings in the Netflix subtitles from English [CC] to English to get better subtitles

It doesnt have the japanese voices :p i personally tried the first episode but i gave up as soon as i heard the male voices. The sub is so much better. And yeah there's bits and pieces in the subtitles you would want to be more easy to understand but you get the picture even with how it is now.

I watched the sub in English, and since its not my first language, I had to change the subtitle to my home language because there were so much slang that I don't understand.

Thanks for the warning, OP. Netflix also did a terrible job with Bastard ONA. Like wtf, whoever was in charge of these subs should be replaced.

"Just watch the dub." But I don't want to.

Seriously considering rewatching it in English dub

Im a near 100% sub guy. But I knew from 2 minutes on this one is a dub watch. The dubs are fantastic and likely the intended voice over, so thats what I recommend.

Netflix doesn't give a shit about anime, they only care to cash in on anime fans.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Disagree with you, only chatting through the communication devices was a little cringe. Otherwise it was gold, Netflix flexed, in subs and everything else.

The subtitles are extremely annoying because sometimes the subs end before the character stops talking and most of the time the subs are completely different to what the characters are saying, at this point I would've just switched to the dub but I'm not going to because Aoi Yuuki is in the sub.
