My mental health giving me a tough time, I'd tried to watch or read wholesome stuff inorder to feel escaped but it's not working, I'm sick of those so-called emotional phases of characters fabricated with poor writing, when I asked a guy in a gc whether he saw an anime that depicts mental illness, he suggested me his favorite anime, "A Silent Voice", I don't wanna do a whole rant on how much poorly written it is when it comes to capturing emotions, dynamics and more importantly feelings, I don't know what makes it even resonates with others, it doesn't even scratch the surface in any of the themes it tries to address. Anyways, if you guys know about any such anime then do tell me about it.

Try evangelion.

Maybe Berserk too if you feel like trying to read something messed up in order to feel that it could be worse.

It sounds like in a way what you're looking for is something to help you but you don't appreciate blatant/ outwardly shallow attempts at portraying mental illness in anime, I understand that. These are really subjective ones and weird I'll give but for me I resonated with them as someone who has had very bad mental health issues in the past- I can't explain why as much but maybe it's that nuance/undertone you can't explain that appeals to you too

Haibane Renmei
Monogatari series
The Tatami Galaxy
Silver Spoon
Hyouka
Mob Psycho
Welcome to the NHK
Ping Pong The Animation
Rilakkuma to Kaoru-san
Ouran Highschool Host Club

Minus NHK and Haibane none of them are psychological as a main genre or anything but I understand to an extent how you're feeling, obviously not exactly, so I thought maybe suggestions which just gave me characters I could connect to and which I related aspects of the story or such to my mental health would be something interesting to you so you could possibly feel the same

A couple others I'll say, these are comedies, because for me it's important to remember life is not so bad and that mental health is something that can be helped and logical. I think shows like this which either parody mental health or tackle it in a lighthearted way helped me understand that the world wasn't ending and that sometimes I'm the one being silly haha

Kuchuu Buranko
Osomatsu-san
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Feel free to ignore if none of it appeals to you but I wanted to help in any way that I could, things will be okay somehow! Keep your chin up!

Kuuchuu Buranko. I am not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I believe it'll help. A reminder though, that the style of animation for this series is very different, Toei went full experimental mode on this, and it turned out brilliant.

Uramichi Oniisan I guess?
It's more along the lines of midlife crisis, but should kind of count.

Banana fish (though I'd read the trigger warnings for this show first)

Evangelion

These are the two that come to mind right off the bat.

Asper Kanojo/ That's my Atypical Girl - features struggles with Autism (and maybe Borderline personality disorder?). Very bittersweet and unapologetic in its depiction.

Shrink: Seishinkai Yowai- a manga about a Psychiatrist who goes around diagnosing and treating people with various mental illnesses.

Koe no Katachi is great but it doesn't deal with mental health, just regular regrets and redemption. It must have been recommended by someone who doesn't know a lot about mental health issues tbh.

Anyway, the two most obvious anime where the topic is literally mental health are:
https://myanimelist.net/anime/6774/Kuuchuu_Buranko
https://myanimelist.net/anime/27911/Anime_de_Wakaru_Shinryounaika

Beyond that you mostly get more (or less) subtle undertones when anime revolve around a character that struggles with mental health, but it isn't often made very explicit. Welcome to the NHK is pretty open about it but can also be over-the-top and is pretty otaku-centric so idk if that bothers you or not. The anime is also a kind of watered down version of the LN and manga and omits some - imo vital - parts of his mental health struggle including substance abuse.

For me personally the best and most realistic depiction of depression and the slow crawl out of it is happening in 3-gatsu. It's not as openly in the focus as in Welcome to the NHK but it just feels more accurate than most other depictions of depression I've seen in fiction. Plus it's just a generally great 10/10 show.

Then there's some dark comedy shows that kinda revolve around the issue, like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Uramichi Onii-chan that can also be very relatable but are still mostly about comedy/parody, just in a dark way. I really like that approach as well, but idk about you.

Oh and then you have the terminally depressing but pretty good movie 'Colorful' which tackles teenage suicide and can get pretty dark but is conceptually very well done and an overall good watch, but not very fit to lift your mood if that's what you're looking for.

Beyond that I honestly can't think of many anime that tackle mental health. There's plenty of 'psychological' anime that vaguely fit the bill but usually have very specific circumstances that lead to the struggles so they tend to not be as relatable to me as something realistic like 3-gatsu or even Welcome to the NHK. I'm thinking Bokurano or NGE or some of the other anime previous people listed. I can see why they would be brought up, but I think they fit the bill peripherally at best.

The same goes for a lot of the 'coming of age' stuff I see people listing (like Ping Pong or Mob Psycho). Just general struggles of growing up, which are always largely psychological but I wouldn't exactly put that into the same category as mental illnesses like clinical depression or anxiety. They can still be relatable of course, but it's not quite the same topic imo.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but that's it off the top of my head.
I probably regret this post by now.

More director Nakamura Kenji than Toei. He'd already had success with the "Bake Neko" arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales and its spinoff Mononoke. His experimental style fit what noitaminA was looking for back in the day.

I think Toei is a pretty interesting studio despite its size and prominence. GeGeGe no Kitarou (2018) was excellent throughout, and the anime-original episode twenty written by the Toei staff won my personal "episode-of-the-year" award for 2018.

Yeah I am aware that it's more of the director than the studio, I named the studio only for convenience sake. I'll check out GeGeGe no Kitarou for sure, I tend to like most of your recommendations! Toei is a great studio loaded with talented staffs, I like most of their anime, even though there was a time where they weren't putting out the best products.

Glad to see you still around and well, SeijiSensei!

Not an Anime , but i'd recommend reading the Manhwa Dr. Frost , which is about a genius psychologist consulting patients suffering of diverse illness.
