Last trial mission of the mew project for Gou and he teamed up with Shigeru to catch the two new legendary golems that have been added in the 8G (Regidrago and Regieleki) and they both managed to catch the two ones on their 1st try with a simple pokeball lol, and since the 5 legendary golems were reunited Regigigas appeared during a little time :o well anyway Gou finally managed to make it into the top 3 and passed! That's well deserved for him :D

You know, after a great presentation of a Legendary Pokémon in episode 102, I was expectedly constipated with this one, but knowing the outcome in advance I was expecting a disaster and I'm glad I entered in the right mood to enjoy some positive surprises.

(+) The dialogue between Gary and Goh was good, with Gary questioning Goh on whether he had learned to cooperate, and his teamwork with Horace on the ship was shown as evidence. What was also interesting was Gary's question about why Goh wants to capture Mew, and so he gave a more apt answer than when Mewtwo asked him: because of Mew's DNA, which contains information about all Pokémon, Goh wants meet him to learn more about Pokémon. Not to get everyone to meet Mew, but vice versa (could this mean that meeting Mew means the end of Goh's role in the anime?). Goh is becoming a far more tolerable piece to watch, and Project Mew has had a big impact on that perception. It should have been introduced much earlier.

(+) No Ash (to show Goh's independence and give him time to talk to Gary without Ash's intervention, in addition to giving a gap to show that Ash is training)

(+) As controversial as it is for a Legendary to be captured, especially by Goh, the battle was okay. They started with logical typing choices and I thought it was really cool to see Regis switch opponents because they realized their main moves didn't work. The strategies and teamwork were the best part of the episode and for me it helped not to leave such an uncomfortable feeling about Regieleki and Regidrago being captured by someone other than a Top Trainer like Tsurugi or a very reputable one in the Pokémon world like Brandon. The problem, in my opinion, is to need "only" what was presented to succeed in catching a Pokémon of this caliber (I'll talk more about this below).

(+-) I liked the fact that Urshifu was a little injured in the battle to show that Registeel was a decent match for him, unlike when the bear faced Regice. That brutal Close Combat sequence was directly inspired by a Pokédex entry, which is another nice detail.

(+-) What was the point of Regigigas Dynamax in the end? Just reference SwSh gameplay? Where are the Regis going now? Goh stayed with Regieleki? Questions that will probably be answered in the future but that left the ending a little emptier.

(+-) "It makes sense" to choose Cinderace and Flygon to take Regieleki as they were the two who almost defeated another Electric-type Legendary earlier in the season (Just a fun fact I guess.)

(-) The appearance of these rivals came out of nowhere. I understand it's a matter of scale to show that there are other competitors running out of time as well, but I felt they were practically there just to justify a bunch of Galarmons and wasting valuable time away from the main event of the episode. It's like the writers have remembered that Gen 9 is coming out in November and that they haven't shown many Gen 8 mons, so they're desperately trying to catch up. There were seven Galarmon debuts in total, and apart from the two main stars, they all looked wasted.

(-) The banalization of Legendary Pokemon is back with a vengeance. In addition to just a beep on the cellphone indicating where there is one to find and catch, it is imaginable that normally you would have to use several Pokémon, heal them frequently and spend countless Poké Balls to capture such a beast but here they practically only needed one critical hit to enter the regular Poké Ball on the first try (it must have been like that with Brendan, but at least Brendan was already a top trainer before he caught the Regis), using only two regular Pokémon each. They invented this rule probably for reasons of budget and time, because it is part of the cause of lack of intensity and sense of difficulty in this battle that was resolved with only a successful pair like in Zapdos and Golurk raids. It already didn't seem so easy for Tsurugi and his Legendary partner, imagine how it should be for Goh and his bunny.

(-) In the same vein as above, Tsurugi has now four Legendaries then? Would this be a record so far in the anime? The point is that if Legendaries can be easily found and caught, it takes the shine off the show and demotes these fascinating Pokemon to just "prizes" that you can get without having to work so hard (Eusine cries) rather than actual mystical legendary living creatures. I've always found this to be one of the most frustrating things about anime in recent years and I think this risk will always exist as long as Goh is around, which for me is a big problem no matter how much he's been "fixed" in the last 20 or 30 episodes or how much this episode 113 has avoided pouring praise him for his achievements (like that early proudful overconfident personality of him that may annoys some fans lol).

Sorry for the huge text and bad grammar, didn't proofread.

Gary has certainly come a lot far, being able to give a lecture on pride.

It actually doesn't, since neither of the 680 base stats Pokemon like Lugia, Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Zekrom, Dialga, etc have been caught. Just mythicals for the most parts.

This week's episode we returned back to the main storyline of Journeys, with Goh being given his final Trial Mission for Project Mew, tasked with catching Regieleki and Regidrago in the Split-Decision Ruins, and encountering not just Gary but also his rivals from the previous mission, Layla and Shunya. With this episode fundamentally being the closure of Goh's quest for Tokens like Raihan was the closure of Ash's climbing of the ranks, how did this episode do? Overall, some small quibbles aside, I'd say it was a solid conclusion for Project Mew's 'competition' side.

One thing of interest is that, while Ash does have a few scenes to himself, this episode is the very first time Goh had an adventure completely his own as, while the episode shedding light on his and Horace's past had no appearences of Ash, it was more about reminiscing than adventuring. This was a good choice, as it puts the focus completely on Goh's skills and capabilities alongside his rivals, while avoiding the distracting presence of Ash from having the audience ask questions that aren't important to the story progression. I also liked the start of the episode showcasing Quillon catching Registeel, completing the set we have seen in the prior episodes and explaining their purpose as being key to unlock the Split-Decision Ruins's door, much like the in-game version. This helps giving purpose to the prior appearences of Regice and Regirock, and helps making this final Trial Mission feel like a fitting conclusion.

It was nice to see Goh and Gary spending the remainder of the episode together, both talking to each other on the way to the temple's main room, trying to solve the puzzle together and eventually fighting against their opponents. This episode is in many way the counterpoint and show of progression from the Articuno Trial Mission, and it shows very well: Goh and Gary retain their newfound mutual respect for each other, not only holding respectful conversations but aside from a bit of comedic fumbling with them trying to activate the puzzle showing much better teamwork and willingness to play along with each other, and the Regi puzzle requiring both Goh and Gary to act in sync to awaken both of the Galarian titans is a good way to underscore it. It shows how Goh is willing to overcome his flaws to do what's necessary, while it also brings Gary's characterization full circle by confirming how his sassy behavior towards Goh really was an act to spur him as it was stated the prior time they met, with Gary now much more in line with his characterization after the original series even towards Goh.

The later arrival of Shunya and Layla was quite appreciated, as well: between the former's need to reach the top 3 and the latter's need to retain her top 2 position, they both have reason to try and impede Gary and Goh's progress, and much like the prior Trial Mission their presence helps giving a better impression that there's more potential Chasers around than just the three we knew would eventually join in. Their battle with Goh and Gary also works nicely as a first showing of the two's teamwork in a battle setting after the failure of the Articuno battle, setting the stage for the major fight of the episode as Regieleki and Regidrago are awakened. While the battle itself is short, it does a good job selling Goh and Gary's capabilities as trainers, attempting to face the Regi with immune Pokémon only to be blindsided when they decide to switch targets, forcing both of them to work together and find a way to damage them enough to throw their Poké Balls, resulting in a nicely earned victory for both Goh and his major rival.

While brief, I also loved the fact Goh managing to enter the top 3 was confirmed through his call to Ash, not only showing that he had been working off his team as much as possible but also allowing him to congratulate Goh even if he couldn't be in the Crown Tundra. It's a moment that sells nicely Goh's earned achievement, and I'm fairly interested to see how the expedition to find Mew will go now that Goh, Gary and Horace are the confirmed Chasers for it.

The only quibbles I have are, overall, that the animation and choreography was a tad hit and miss: while the final Rapid Spin and Blaze Kick combo with Blastoise and Cinderace is fantastic as were some other scenes portrayed, both the battle against Layla and Shunya and some parts of the Regieleki and Regidrago fight leave something to be desired, particularly for the former very short duration that makes their presence feel borderline like padding if not for the setup they provide. I'm also a bit confused at the moment about the purpose of the Dynamax Regigigas, as while it is a nice nod to the games's special Den that can only be awakened through having all Regi on hand, it was a tad odd how it only made one brief appearence considering the buildup as an equivalent to Gigantamax Charizard we got from the opening. Not something that ruins the progression of Project Mew in the slightest, but it does get a bit headscratching of a moment.

With all that said, though, the episode still delivers where it matters, allowing for a nice solo Goh adventure with some of his rivals that concludes the qualifying part of Project Mew very well, acknowledging and showing Goh move past his flaws. And with Goh officially a Chaser, time will tell what else the show has in store for him and his rivals now.

TL;DR: An episode that pays off very well the Articuno episode by showing Goh and Gary's improved relationship and teamwork, with solid moments all around leading to an earned and satisfying conclusion for Project Mew's qualifier phase, even with some spotty choreography and some odd choices here and there.

Next week, we'll head back for Oak's Laboratory as Ash trains in preparation for the Masters Tournament, reuniting with his rival Paul for the first time since Diamond & Pearl for a special training spar. May it be a good one.

Nice episode, good project mew trial mission for enlisting the chasers for the project mew, sad that the legendaries were really a lot nerfed. Liked how gary and Goh's relationship has improved, looking for more project mew and we also got the confirmation about Gary, tokio&Goh officially are the chasers. And a foreshadowing of Regigas.

I give this episode 7/10.

This felt like the episode was in a rush, they couldn't let any of the battles to breath rivals down, legendaries down and now a Dynamax Regigigas appear and disappear, at least the interactions between Goh and Gary were great and the moment after the battle with Cinderace and Blastoise was cute.

If your point isn't about the effect of 'legendaries" decreasing, then ignore it.

Well seeing this mythical x legendary nonsense distinction being used as a pretext was enough for it, but thanks for the advice anyway.

Except for the fact that its very applicable in the anime, yes, its best to ignore it if your point was, well, pointless.

And all Regis are here, including Dynamax Regigigas.

Now I wonder, what space does Project Mew have now when in just a few more episodes the Masters Tournament begins?

And in other news, the Best Rival Paul returns!!!...

At last we got the obligatory DLC tie in, though surprisingly a lot later than I would have expected. I actually quite enjoyed it this time around, with Go and Gary having to team up for the sake of the final entry challenge.
