THIS IS NOT A HATE POST!

Ok, just to clarify, I really enjoyed MIA. It also had a phenomenal soundtrack and an amazing movie. But I can’t put my finger on why so many people call it a “masterpiece” as they claim it to be. Because I personally don’t think it’s a said “masterpiece”.

So my question is, what do you love so much about Made in Abyss (if you do)? And if you don’t, what do you dislike about it?

I’m asking because I genuinely want to know. It might help me formulate my thoughts better.

ALBEIT Made in Abyss is VERY FORMULAIC when it comes to story progression (as from the manga) but the worldbuilding gets pretty intriguing, the characters are unique on their own and I personally like the nature behind the aspect of the story; which is why it's a bit explicit for the most part but the anime lessen that thankfully.

Gorgeous art, beautiful soundtrack, interesting/lovable characters, and unique plot is what does it for me.

I mean y'all giving too much credit to the word masterpiece. It's a very vague term. The art, soundtrack, characters, world building, storyline, anything can be used as a reason to label sth a masterpiece. In Made in Abyss' case, most would say it is a very well told story, with beautiful art and soundtrack, set in a very unique and intriguing world with characters that relatable. See...vague. Honestly I would say it's just enjoyment. A series doesn't have to be special at all for someone to call it a masterpiece, it just needs to be very enjoyable (although MIA is incredible in terms of writing imo, although again, not everyone's gonna agree with that).

World building,Invisible Plot armour,Realisticity and the Dark tones.
The problems are; Transitions from dark to wholesome atmosphere are not-so subtle and the characters are kinda shallow(which is not bad in itself but they occasionally change from being normal to overly complex).

I love the world building, the characters, all the mystery and especially the adventure part. I just can't wait to see what the abyss offers next. Also another thing I've grown to love is the art style. This is a double edge sword tho because it sat in my plan to watch for a long time and many people think it's for children and don't want to give it a try.

it's not. it takes so long to get good. However the sequel movie is really great and much closer to a masterpiece.

For me, it’s definitely the sense of mystery and adventure. I absolutely love the world they’ve set up, and I’ve never been so curious as I am when it comes to "what is the abyss? What’s down there?". The last time I can remember that feeling of curiosity is "What’s in the damn basement?!".

For me, the series didn’t really kick off until episode 5, but everything after that has only served to add on to the feeling of mystery and suspense in a way no other show does for me.

A true adventure anime, music, animation, characters, dark themes. It all does it well and the abyss give a great sense of mystery. There isn’t a lot of truly good and unique adventure anime.
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

It’s worldbuilding is phenomenal, the story is unique and the characters are interesting. I mostly like how the world (like the creatures and the environment) is properly used and has a cool logic to it, it makes it really relevant or something (hard to express into words).

The world design is very unique and fantastical. The art for that world is great, the soundtrack fits it perfectly. And the adventure story is surprising great.

Despite having the chibi art style and traditional fantasy adventure story, it is as dark and consequential as it should be in it’s setting compared with most fantasy narratives opting for the family friendly story line. Is it perfect? No. But what is?

You’re never going to find the perfect masterpiece. But what you can find are things you enjoy more and more. There is no cap for how much you can enjoy something in anime or TV in general, and I think you’ll find that it will continue to surprise you throughout your life because there is no limit to what can be achieved in entertainment. And when you find something that completely surprises you with how good it is … that is a 10/10.

Because this anime is the only one that had ever made me thirsty for information, backstories and such. I don't usually care as much, but when watching Nanachi and Mitty's (god I hope that's their names, if not then sorry) backstory, I was super interested like never before. It honestly amazed me how they made me care so much about everything. Not only the characters, but about the abyss itself as well, I just wanted to know... everything. And it's the only anime that has made me feel this way, so I think it's really special about something.

I really enjoy Made in Abyss, the brutal world, characters, music, and animation make it fantastic. The main drawback for me is Rico. I don’t like her character even though she main girl. I really like Reg though and its too good of a show to drop just because of one character

I watched it a month ago. I really enjoyed it but I have the same feeling as you. I heard a lot about it, people said it's masterpiece and etc. so I had a very high expectation but... It is really good but there are good animes with good storyline and music ,... too out there. and I didn't feel the differencethat much. I liked 3-4 last episodes more. so for me this first season is just an start to become a "masterpiece".

The fact it’s a simple premise but one that is super intriguing. That being “the exploration of the unknown”. I’ve watched too many good anime with the same premise get ruined by them trying to info dump at the end to explain everything ruining the buildup. Thankfully MIA hasn’t gone down that path yet. They’re doing a good job feeding crumbs of info while also keeping the “unknown” interesting. It’s also something I hope isn’t a premise that doesn’t get dragged out either.

Nothing is a masterpiece for everyone. I just happen to like this kind of shows & on top of that it's the best i can find in its genre. That's why it's a Masterpiece to me.

It conveys the feeling of going through a dangerous and exciting adventure through the eyes of a child in such a brilliant way that I've never seen any other anime do before. not to mention and story, art, and music are phenomenal! Also Nanachi

The wonder and mystery of the world, music, art, the actual feeling of danger thus the feeling of the world being alive and independent ecosystem.
Also the pacing and witheld information amount is perfect so it keeps the tension high and it never becomes boring. suspension of disbelief is never broken so the world feels incredibly organic

Characters are cool aswell, one of the shows i cant find any flaws.

I didnt like the movie as much tho. 1 point below the serie for me

Although the show looked good, the plot was bland and repetitive, and I feel like they focused on the wrong things. It would have been neat if each episode focused on the next layer down instead of introducing new characters and giving three episodes to develop the character, just to leave them behind

Quote "What’s so great about Made In Abyss"

I, 8 episodes in, I'm asking myself the very same question, there's nothing really special here I don't understand all hype this show got back in 2017, Made in Abyss this, made in abyss that beaches please. All the hype is because we are living in clown world and the MC is a "strong, independent" female character. But in reality she's neither strong or independent, like in RL she, like many, many females around needs a real strong, independent, brave male to carry her around.
Me every time I hear the word "reparations": 🤣🤣🤣

One of the most overrated things I have ever seen, there is nothing remarkable about it to be honest, it is quite average in my opinion.
