In western animation, Betty Boop is widely considered the first female in western animation designed to be a sex symbol. In anime, who would get this award?
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

Definitely Fujiko Mine, I can't think of any anime character before thought to be a sex symbol and a femme fatale.

I would go back even further than "Lupin the 3rd" and say "Michi Shimura" aka "Trixie" from "Speed Racer". Barely anyone in the west even in the 80s knew about "Lupin the 3rd" much less "Fujiko Mine". ""Lupin the 3rd" didn't become popular in the west till the early 2000s.

No one is going to deny that "Fujiko Mine" was voted sexiest anime character. But this thread is inquiring about the first sex symbol of the medium. Trixie came before Fujiko Mine.

Definitely Mine Fukijo... she is often referred to as the most beautiful woman in the world and the 1st femme fatal. She is the very definition of femme fatal.
Given monkey punch created the character in the 60s, i think she was the first like a lot of folks here ..

And damn what a character she is...

She came first but in my opinion, Trixie's design isn't really all that sexy though. She looks pretty generic. Maybe i'm spoiled by modern fanservice.

This isn't a topic about America, or "the west" as you call it. Lupin III has always been popular in Japan.

Still the thread is inquiring about the first sex symbol. Trixie clearly came before Fujiko Mine.

As far as I remember "Lupin the 3rd" never aired on any western TV networks until after the year 2000. I personally was exposed to "Lupin the 3rd" early in my life because my parents use to frequently visit Japan as Korean missionaries during the 70s and early 80s bringing back a lot of culture this included Anime such as "Lupin the 3rd".

"Speed Racer" ended up being broadcasted in the 80s and 90s all across the west and in other parts of Asia. The "Speed Racer" franchise not only landed it a blockbuster movie in the late 2000s but also during the bronze age of comics during the 80s translated manga of the franchise reached almost everywhere in the world as well as spin-offs such as the "Racer X" comic.

Being 2022, it's probably hard for people to believe that didn't grow up in the 80s or 90s for a character like "Trixie" being more thought of around the world then someone like Fujiko Mine.

This is just my theory, "Lupin the 3rd" only became popular because of it being broadcasted on cartoon networks adult swim during the early 2000s in the 1st place. The same phenomenon happened with "Cowboy Bebop".

Sure I would think Fujiko Mine is a lot sexier than someone like Trixie if it boils down to comparing the two characters. But this isn't really debating on who is sexier. It's a question about who was the 1st.

I guess you learn something new everyday. Still "Speed Racer" came well before "Lupin the 3rd". Even a girl I dated when I was in high school knew who Trixie was and she was never into Anime. She just remembered watching "speed Racer" as a child in the early 80s on TV.

All those quotation marks remind me of this skit from SNL:

Anyway, I would say Trixie is a fair answer (even though Fujiko Mine is sexier).

I think I'd rather see Betty Boop the anime. The Japanese to need to get on that. As long as ASTRO boy isn't the answer too.

I just recently finished watching the original series from the 70's and I was surprised by the level of nudity for the transformations she's goes through in that show.

Otherwise Lum is my second, just by looks alone because I "knew of" the character, but NOT her significance to anime, until after watching the tv series and thanks to @ColourWheel.

Speed Racer and Lupin didn't come to mind as I haven't watched either of those 2 yet.

I'd say Mine Fujiko and Honey would have been my picks since I know those are very iconic and have been for a long time, especially Fujiko.

I guess Speed Racer came before that but I was never aware of it growing up and always perceived it more of an american phenomenon while here in europe other anime were more influential (like Lupin). It just wasn't really present at all and I only learned about its existence in my 20s on MAL. So in terms of iconicness, influence, longevity I would still go with Fujiko. Sure, there have been female characters that were framed as sexy before her, but are they iconic enough to count as a sex symbol? I'd say it's up for debate.

On a sidenote while I looked up speed racers airing history in europe and my country in particular I found out that parts of it did air, once in the early 70s and once in the early 90s. The gap in between was because german media was apparently calling the show 'glorification of homicidal attitudes', a 'grotesque horror comic', and 'only comparable to fascist propaganda movies'. They only aired 3 episodes in 1971 and then the show was canned until the early/mid 90s where it got a brief run before being replaced by the generation of anime I grew up with on TV in the mid 90s. So I guess that explains why the show was never on my radar here and never felt like an iconic anime. Because it never got the chance to be one here.

But goddammit you'd think in 1971 WWII wasn't that far in the past for people to make such ridiculous comparisons of anime vs nazi propaganda.
I probably regret this post by now.

@Alcoholicide

You are forgetting that in the 80s they ended up airing reruns of the original Speed Racer on UHF channels during off hours of the night for years all across America. It's not documented very well if you try to research it on the internet because it wasn't a universal thing across all states.

Then sometime in the early 90s MTV ended up getting their hands on the series and started broadcasting Speed Racer nation wide in the early mornings. Sometimes even using it as a filler spot before their prime time broadcasting shows.

It was "NOW Comics" in the 80s that brought the franchise back to life in America without ever releasing any new episodes.

This is not to be confused with "The New Adventures of Speed Racer" which was completely an American product that was aired in the early 90s as well.

I am simply going by what I remembered growing up.

The fact that both the original Japanese Anime and the American adaptation of the series were present during the 90s obviously gave the franchise enough credence that it was somehow infused in American pop culture even for there to be an adoption of a Blockbuster movie in the late 2000s.

As far as Lupin the 3rd, the only official exposure I remember America having of the franchise in the 80s was an arcade game called "Cliff Hanger". Then the franchise didn't appear again until cartoon network got their hands on "Lupin the 3rd part 2" in the early 2000s. Yet I can't speak for countries like Italy or France, since I have never been to either one of them back then.

Hmm. I would say Fujiko Mine would be the most noticeable sexy female character in anime although a case could be made for Faye Valentine too. As for Trixie from Speed Racer, I never saw her as a sexy character when I watched it as my first anime in the early '90s. Hell, Trixie wasn't my first anime crush(that belonged to Sailor Moon).
