i hate this ending, shit feels like a copout. We really had to set thru all that build up and bum ass Pegasus and his boring ass cult for it to end like this? nah this aint it Sachi just randomly finding Punpun and saving him after he just stabbed himself was an immaculate asspull. he should've died there. Punpun dying while his uncle having a baby and "God" coming out of the baby's eye as the last panel would've been a better "Circle of life" ending than whatever tf we got and the cult should've been more involved with the ending, their whole story was fuckin lame and pointless. You can't even take this shit seriously if you try to re-read it |

I actually liked the ending. It shows how insignificant individuals are. It shows how everything we've seen through Punpun's eyes, is just our normal, daily lives. Punpun is just part of a mob. Whatever he, or the side characters, have done, it still won't affect the world. Everything keeps repeating since we're all reliant on the same society. |

ending definitely caught me off-guard, i genuinely didn't expect a hollow ending like that. i expected something a little bit more...dramatic? got mixed feelings about this manga, the pegasus scenes were boring as shit and i just skimmed through 'em. on the other hand though, i can't deny that yuuichi, sachi, punpun, and aiko's stories were great. not the biggest fan of pessimistic works to begin with soo...8/10 |

what a bittersweet ending... i feel so empty, i'll never smile again Aiko deserved better, she was always suffering, she deserved to be happy... i really hated punpun sometimes, he was so stupid, don't think he deserved a happy ending after all he did to Aiko. i'll probably reread this manga, it's a masterpiece |

Things escalated rather rapidly over the final 20-30 chapters there, aside from the Pegasus Cult. Which I didn't particularly care about either way. I felt those chapters were more of a chore to get through as I was simply craving more Punpun-related content. Either way, Aiko and Punpun together during their escape was certainly... something. I guess we're supposed to assume Aiko died, but seeing as she left a note and they never acknowledged they found her body, or showed a funeral, I sort of feel like she may have just ghosted Punpun. At the very least, it's probably left up to the reader's imagination whether she's dead or not. I really prefer Sachi over Aiko anyway, so I can't say I'm not disappointed about how her and Punpun's relationship panned out. I feel like they would've been pretty good for each other, and I guess being friends and overall positive figures in one another's lives is better than nothing, but I feel a bit cheated out of that ship. Though, whose to say they aren't closer than the series is letting on, or even if Punpun later actually gets over Aiko in the future and fully embraces Sachi. Again, seems like it's at least possible, even if not explicitly depicted at the end. Overall, this was a pretty emotional series and I feel like it did a good job of translating human emotions onto pages with words, but even more so with the art. Based on the art-style alone I intend to check out Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction. Having Punpun's shape change throughout the series was rather engaging, and his relationship with the physical manga panels themselves were often very interesting. Though, even more of the down-to-earth stuff; characters, buildings, nature, backgrounds, etc was extremely detailed. I enjoyed this series. |

I liked the happy ending, I wasnt expecting that, but still not great, it felt rushed and I still don't forgive punpun for hurting so many people so deeply. However I like how it was from another person's perspective of punpun, because that's what I think this was all about: how your perception of others shape yourself. That would also explain why punpun looks like a bird i think, but these are just my stupid theories. I would have given this a 7 but the ending is everything for me so this will be a strong 8, could become a weak 9. I understand why everyone loves this so much but there was just way too much stuff I didn't like. Seki was probably my favorite character, then sachi and after that idk. Punpun isn't my least favorite character anymore but I definitely still don't like him. Overall a great manga overrated a bit but still worth a read |

I first read this mange 7 yr ago at around 22yo and only give it a 6/10 on MAL probably because I could not understand punpun especially after the event after Aiko's mom death. Now, 7 yr later, after re-reading this. I can understand so much more on what the character are feeling and the actions they take. The emotion of sadness/anger/desperation, giving up. The pain when I see them being forcefully separated due to the cruel wimps of fate. |

Looks like this is the end of a very painfull but unique reading expierence. The ending really felt like ideal fit for the themes of this series. We started from kid Punpun and now we end up seeing him as an ordinary grown up, living his life , sadly it's without Aiko. At least he now has something he can call family and for someone like Punpun it's better than nothing. Its really better that we never got to see his face because it really isn't something that was meant to be shown or something that would have some sort of impact to the story overall. When I read the final few pages of this chapter I was more happy than I could ever be from this manga. I finaly realised what it all meant, it really is The Cycle of despair that just keeps repeating. And we all were given an oppotunity to witness that cycle up close to its fullest with its beautiful and tragic, shocking and emotional moments. This manga definitely is something that can be very unique that we will probably never expierence again, theres a few good reasons why people say this manga broke them and that we should not read manga if we are easily psychologically affected by something. Most of top rated mangas have some sort of heroes and their adventures and how they overcome everything and do something heroic in the progress but this one isn't like this at all. I doubt that I will have much desire in myself to read this again but the verdict is clear as a day - It's a masterpiece full of symbolism and despair |

Going through Punpun's experiences was just insane and Aiko's tragic death after all the suffering she went through is one of the most soul-crushing things I've ever experienced. Just thinking about how she wasn't able to find happiness and live on next to the one she loved is enough to make me cry again. This manga is just in a league of its own. EDIT: woke up twice last night... teared up in both of them. This hurts so much. |

But, if I remember correctly, he took her body down and then carried her with him. Then left her with those kids alongside that shack. Left, came back and she was gone. If she was dead, how did her body disappear? Those two young kids certainly didn't carry her. There was also a note that said, "May you never forget me." I feel like she's not dead. Or at the very least, only like 99% -- not 100. |

The storyline of this manga is truly masterpiece. Absolutely 10/10. This becomes the best manga I have ever read not just because of ending or Punpun. Tbh I dislike both of them in the end a bit. But that doesn’t affect my acknowledgment on this manga. The author thoroughly demonstrates the reality and ideology of how society works in real world. l love how the author played my mind and emotion in this manga. I used to have sympathy on Punpun. He had tough and tragic childhood. But then all my sympathy are gone in every upside down moments. I became to hate him more and more. And then, I remembered he just a mere human being after all who lives in this society, who sees through the concept of all of these society and who suffers from this society. Does he a good and kind person or evil and brutal scumbag? For me, he is both. When I consider like that he is just a human among us. Aiko for me is the most tragic character in this manga. I can’t imagine myself what she was going through even in her last days. She encountered lots of pain both mentally and physically in her whole life. Every things was unfair for her. It makes me hurt seeing like that especially her last words for Punpun “May you never forget me”. It made me cry while I was reading in the midnight. This manga will never be a happy ending for me. It’s good Punpun finally has a normal life revolving around with the people who care about him. Will he be happy now? Who knows? He may forget Aiko and keep moving on. There will also be no specific favorite characters for me on this manga. Thank Asano for creating such a masterpiece. |

It affected my sleep and made me angry although that's what art can do. I cried for Aiko and the inevitability of her ending. Two drowning children who haven't been equipped with the skills, wit or most importantly will could do nothing other than pull each other under the water. She was given nothing her life other than the innocent love from another fractured child that is reflected on the face of the boy as the cycle begins anew. The boy and the new girl in class echo the earlier generation and we are shown the same awed expression that Punpun's face presumably did as he sees the new girl, whose brief exchange with the teacher shows she is under equipped and under loved also. We the reader are left to hope one or both has something other than a decent if damaged uncle to help them stay above water. The real tragedy isn't her end, awful and obvious as it was always going to be. It was that she had nothing in the intervening 10 years other than the memory of her broken boy to sustain her. She was never shown interacting with anyone because she didn't and couldn't. I was simultaneously happy and horrified that she had nurtured those feelings for a decade, even choosing clothes with her broken, lost boy in mind because abuse and subsequent emotional stunting had robbed her of the ability to create anything else. I don't think it was believable when they wore personas upon meeting at the driving school but what do I know? They were pretty much all that the other had and how wouldn't you react like a crying, starving baby seeing that which they thought they needed the most. The whole thing is horrific. The way the mangaka is showing her as a tragic, stunted child at the end, wistfully playing alone on a fair ground ride at the end while awaiting validation and love that would never come. She's always wistfully alone and always was. Just before her end she loses that front tooth and her face (and the very rare smile) echoes the same lovely, sad gappy expression of her 8 year old self. This is what an abused child who was never helped looks like. Worse than abused, lied to and manipulated into working for peanuts by arguably the true antagonist of this story, her own mother. No wonder she plunged the knife in while punpun was randomly signing for a delivery(!) Art is subjective but for me this is not a happy ending as others have stated above. It's a horrendous ending and I hated it. I hate it. Maybe because I don't and couldn't care about Punpun the boy as we as readers purposely (I assume purposely) couldn't bond with the fragments we are shown and are (as many write) are dismayed at how he treats (for me) the true MC Aiko, but I'm deeply upset about the little girl who never was allowed a chance. Who shows what happens if we don't nurture and love. It's a horrible, horrified story of what happens when children are abused and I hated reading it. Awful. 9/10. Would have been 10 without the cult stuff. |

Ale1212 said: THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Knowing Asano I thought this was going to have a sad end. Thanks God I was wrong, Punpun didn't end up forever in prison, he got a job in real states, Sachi turned into a MILF and her daughter is fond of him. Well, it's debatable whether it's a happy ending. You could suggest that Asano keeping Punpun alive was a crueller fate since Punpun wanted to die in the first place. After all, Asano did plan to kill him off but decided against it because he didn't want him to have a 'clean' end. But I do think that the ending is at least somewhat happy because he manages to move on from everything. |

EDIT: Am I the only one who thinks a sort of 'mystique' would have been lost if he showed Punpun's 'real face'? Well we see enough glimpses of it throughout the manga to be able to at least kind of construct what his face looks like. E.g. in Sachi's portrait, and his mostly bandaged but slightly visible face in the hospital bed. |

In the end, Punpun is still getting blown by the wind to wherever he gets. Although it's not the ending I was looking for, I think an open-ended one works just fine too. Seeing Punpun in the perspective of Harumi is just like how we view a stranger or an old friend, not really knowing what they've been through nor do we really care about them is so cruel yet the most 'normal' thing we do in our eveyday lives. The world just keeps on moving forward, whether we like it or not. A one-of-a-kind manga I've ever read, not that I've read so many, but this manga really blew me away from its artwork and how unpredictable the events are. Overall, it was a nerve-wracking yet quite a fun ride. The dark side of the manga genre I was not ready to experience, not knowing what I'm in for, was quite a revelation for me. Kudos to you, Inio Asano. Goodnight, Punpun. |

My interpretation of introducing Harumin at the final chapters was that it was mainly due to his role as a teacher. Punpun had to go through so much pain in his teens because of his dysfunctional family, but what if, just what if there was a teacher who actually understood his pain, was extroverted enough to tell Punpun, "I'll do anything for your sake as your teacher. So learn to rely more on adults", the way Harumin told that one student who was indifferent to his words of encouragement? I think that the purpose of introducing Harumin as sensei at the very end was to show that there was no one during Punpun's time, but time has moved on and THERE IS actually a sensei that listen's to student's problems. That way, it makes perfect sense to add him at the very end. Also, his final goodbye with Punpun was amazing. Not only both teared up because they won't meet each other again probably, but also it showed that Punpun had returned back to normality, something that I have been rooting for Punpun ever since the whole runaway fiasco with him and Aiko had started. It legit feels like normal life, shit happens but you recover and move on. Truly a true to core slice of life and seinen manga. Oyasumi Punpun 9.5/10 |

with what I had first heard about Goodnight Punpun, I thought this would have the most devastating ending known to man. all the build-up with these tragic events throughout the book didn't help with this thought either. as this manga came to its end though, this is better than any sob story ending that could've been conjured up. too many people take pride in enjoying tragic media, to the ppoint where they dismiss any remotely happy endings as "thoughtless" and almost "childish". while i do agree that some things should've been more thought through in the ending (like seki and shiimizu's part of the story), there's very little i would actually want to change about it. the manga's "good" ending doesn't take away any part of it's impact and sentiment. i really liked this ending, and even with the manga's flaws, this would have to be one of my favorite mangas. i may also just be a sucker for bittersweet endings so who knows lol |

I hate punpun with my life, but i can understand why he was such a sick man... What I can't forgive is his insistence on ruining the lives of others, literally in the entire manga he never showed empathy for anyone (at least after he stopped being a child). And most important than anything... AIKO DESERVED BETTER T.T i cried a lot for her and i still cant believe that she ended her life just like that, after having such a bad life PunPun didnt do ANYTHING to make her happier :C, im so fucking depressed after this, i cant deny that IS a FUCKING MASTERPIECE, but i regret reading it, i will never recommend this to anyone and i will keep my volumes away of my family C: 10/10 |

When I was a stupid kid I went to a haunted house with the goal to not be scared. When Jason jumped out with his chainsaw I proved my bravery by just smiling. Those other people got to really enjoy the haunted house and I didn't. Hopefully that analogy isn't too shitty. Before I set out to read punpun I read comments of people claiming punpun hurt them. I thought "you can't hurt me punpun" and he didn't. After reading punpun I read every single negative review and mixed review on MAL. I read lots of the positive reviews to see what people loved about punpun and what was it I missed. After reading a great Inio Asano interview and all the reviews I "got it". https://mangabrog.wordpress.com/2014/07/06/inio-asano-interview-reality-is-tough-so-read-this-manga-about-cute-girls-and-feel-better/ Punpun's character and family are vague birds so you can self insert into the story. If you look at punpun as just a character and not yourself you might find yourself not caring or even hating punpun. If you had both parents and a healthy household you might struggle to self insert. Inio gives you your unrequited love and then gut punches you, but only if you assumed the role of punpun. Punpun didn't hurt me until after I inserted my family and my life. If you're unstable don't read punpun in this manner. I believe a lot of people that hate the character punpun kept their emotional armor up like I did. |
