Why do you think Anime has gotten so popular as of the last few years?

Four years ago, only four anime on this website had over a million members. Today, that number is 100.

Anime has undoubtedly become more popular, but particularly over this stretch. Why? Do you think that a good thing or is it bad?

My reasoning comes down to two factors

1. Many shows are now being aired on Netflix or older shows are being put on Netflix. Obviously this surges shows accessibility and widens its potential audience, Netflix is a massive service used by many people worldwide.

2. This is weird to me, but dubs. Many more shows get dubs nowadays. Even just a few years ago, it wasn't uncommon for only a select amount of shows, the most popular ones usually, to be the only ones getting dubbed. Now? even more niche seasonal stuff will get dubbed! I can't help but to think this increasingly adds to the popularity of anime as a whole.

What do you think?

Imo the main reason is covid pandemic which held the quarantine for safety. So ppl were locked in their houses and no new movies were releasing so then they come to this community.Ya many streaming services like Netflix also play a major role in it.So when we watch a certain thing we also want to other peoples to see if they haven't so that is my theory.

Good points you got there but don't think too hard about it.
Anime gotten popular just because of cancer called TikTok :D

TikTok even released in 2016 so over these past 5 years anime gotten popular as a result imo.

As someone who's been watching anime for like 10 years already, I know how quiet, silent, and secret the community back then. I also remember that watching anime as a teenager was weird and people would judge for that.

I think the main reason why Anime has gotten so popular as of the last few years is because of the pandemic and everyone going into quarantine finding something to do while we wait as it will be over and some or most people choose to watch anime for that.

but personally speaking, as someone who's spent a few hours everyday on tiktok, not invalidating anyone but since the start of quarantine, Anime's become sort of like a trend, your cool if you watch it, especially the new and popular animes like Haikyuu, AOT, Jujutsu Kaisen and a lot of anime that released in the last 2-3 years. Due to that, people that used to not watch anime, now watch it because to seem cool and knowledgeable.

Believe me when I say a lot of people started to claim that they were a weeb and watch anime in the last year when I remember them saying "oh you watch anime? why are you still watching cartoons? are you a kid?" :)

Accessibility + more promotion. Also shows like AoT, One Punch Man, Your Name & Demon Slayer becoming widely popular. All three of those shows go against the stigma of all anime being either for kids or perverts, thus making anime more acceptable in the eyes of the public. Of course anime does still have somewhat of a stigma associated with it, but it's not the same as it used to be.

It's not only anime. Internet and social media have made pretty much everything you could imagine more accessible. From fitness, to cooking and even perfume channels on YouTube, lol.

A combination of the various aspects mentioned above: internet, covid scare, more accessibility (such as sites like wco), promotion, etc.

I think another point to take notice of is how much western entertainment has been dying recently and a good chunk of their products aren't very fun anymore. Not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying an enjoyable Hollywood movie or western TV show (especially in the animation department) is a lot harder to find nowadays. Anime however is still trying to push out an enjoyable product that doesn't just feel like something trying to push a message onto you or make a quick buck (Disney is especially guilty of this with what they're doing to Marvel and Star Wars).

Granted, not all animes nowadays are good. Hell, I can think of plenty of animes that are pretty garbage currently airing. But they at least feel like they have more of a heart to them and something actually made for an audience that is more widespread rather than what I've previously mentioned.

I'd recommend checking out this video if you want more info, as he pretty much goes over some of the basics that can basically be attributed nowadays (even though he talks about anime girls rather than just anime.)

Huh interesting MAL has grown that much even since I joined. It's a combination of CoViD giving people way more free time to do leisurely indoors activities, partially the fact Western media has been hit harder regarding delays than anime (allowed Demon Slayer to be one of the most profitable films in 2020) and just in general more exposure through the internet and social media which is the biggest factor.

It's pretty rare to go on twitter and not encounter someone with anime avatar (not because who I follow even in a lot of unrelated discussion to anime) and others like JoJo and Chainsaw Man have gone trending even over here so naturally people are curious what is going on.

Covid is the main reason I’m guessing. People are quarantined at home, and have to find new things to do to keep themselves entertained. I also agree with your point about Netflix having an influence on this. From what I understand, Netflix did help make anime more mainstream. YouTube, Twitter, Tik Tok, etc. might’ve helped popularize anime as well.

Also, the whole perception of anime seems to have changed nowadays. It has become a lot more acceptable in society now.

-Cuz the western entertainment especially western animation went full woke and people with common sense have enough.
-TV is not longer popular.
-Easy accessibility

It's becoming less and less niche for sure. Due to the boom of streaming services and partly because Netflix starts producing anime.

Can't really say if this is good or bad for anime as a whole.
Anime is fun.

According to my brother who is still in high school, TikTok has had a massive effect on younger people watching anime, making it more popular/cool to watch and openly enjoy it. Makes me wish I graduated a few years later :')

anime is already a category of entertainment fully established worldwide, similar to film, music or video games.

For example the anime industry is worth more than the music industry

These past few years have been great (or bad) for the anime community. I always look to Covid (lockdown) and Tik Tok (internet, social media, streaming services) as the big contributors in recent times. Then I attribute the big main stream anime's like Demon Slayer, Your Name, etc. I don't remember anime being such a "big thing" before 2020 (excluding the anime community itself)

I guess in the long run it's a good thing (maybe?). I'm pretty sure if you brought up anime with younger people they might know about it nowadays. I do want to say that anime still feels "trendy" b/c of Covid and all the other factors.

Easily accessible and cheap internet is the biggest factor. It's fairly obvious that if countries with bigger population have easily accessible internet, it may help in boosting the viewership of any form of media.

Then the recent covid pandemic too can be counted as one of the prime reasons.

The Internet and streaming services rise in popularity.

I think a lot of people caught a glimpse of it when they were younger (Like because of Toonami, the 4kids boom, Sailor Moon) and decided to look up more anime when they got older.
