I've seen the trailer for the new movie "Hathaway Flash" which completely blew me away. In the discussion below the anime page I had seen a sort of "watch order" for the Gundam series.
The quickest way to get into Gundam is the 3 movies from 0079, Char's Counterattack into Hathaway Flash.
But when I saw the first movie, I really loved it. And now I'm curious if I should maybe stop to watch Zeta Gundam?
From what I saw, just in reviews and in general Zeta Gundam seems to be incredible.
Should I watch that after finishing the movie trilogy, or can I still skip it, go into Hathaway Flash and maybe come back to it later on?

PS: I heard ZZ should be avoided like the plague.

Better start with Gundam The Origin (the TV version works too) which will explain to you the whole UC situation.

Zeta Gundam is pretty insane...not sure what your reaction to it will be.
If you are in a hurry and only want to connect the dots watch the Zeta compilation/remake movies. They are messy but not as crazy as the TV series.

"I heard ZZ should be avoided like the plague" - Actually not true but if you are in a hurry skip it. It is not that important for the Char's Counterattack story.

If you like the UC stuff, later go check on The 08th MS Team, Gundam Thunderbolt and Gundam Unicorn. (By the way all of those happen before Hathaway Flash.)

Yeah. It's a bit slow but it's one of the best ones imo.
As for ZZ, its biggest problem is that it's a direct sequel to zeta that came out a week after zeta ended and its first episode takes place right after zeta's last episode while its tone is completely different (funny harem anime with cute loli).

zeta is pretty good, some parts are as good as the original gundam and the war aspect and strategies are better than the original. Zeta is a must watch imo

In order to have an essential understanding of what's going on with Hathaway, the bare minimum you would need to watch are 0079 (The 43-episodes long Tv series or the 3 compilation movies), Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack.

For Zeta Gundam, I won't say I hated it but I don't love it either, as I find the show narrative and tone-wise to be an exhausting watching experience; Zeta Gundam's tone-wise is bleak from beginning to end, and it never lightens up for even individual episodes. People rarely have casual conversations, but instead having arguments, shouting at each other, and just being unlikable in general. I could also go on about the treatment of women in Zeta (especially Reccoa, I'm looking at you), but that's a whole other discussion. The end result is that I find Zeta to be a brutal, draining show to get through.

I binged through Zeta and watched something like 6-7 episodes every day, and by the end of my watch, I find myself so tired that the ending, with all the death and misery, didn't get much reaction from me.

As for ZZ, the show didn't start out all that great and has some strange things going on tone-wise for the 1st half; but I don't think you should skip ZZ, but rather just watch ZZ (And contrary to popular opinion, the show does have aspects that are done better than Zeta) and form your own opinion on it (Especially ZZ also started the foundation of some vital plot points that was in latter series, like Unicorn and the Crossbone manga)

At the end of the day, I suggest to just watch both Zeta and ZZ; judge them by yourself, and form your own opinion on wherever you personally like them or not.

Zeta ends on a cliffhanger. You will have no closure if you watch Zeta without ZZ.

I've watched compilation movies instead because I wasn't sure if so many episodes worth my time. And it turned out I chose the right variant, because I certainly wouldn't sit through 50 episodes of that. I've done the same thing with ZZ, too.
I think it may be enough to keep up with the story and know everything you need. Personally, I enjoyed the movies. It wasn't confusing and didn't feel like I've missed something important. So I was able to continue forward without suffering through the long-ass series I would probably dislike.
Some people may disagree but you may watch Zeta and ZZ as movies, if you feel hesitant about the series. Totally skipping it is not a good idea anyway.
Char's Counterattack movie is a must watch, too.
Also, Origin and Unicorn are too good to be overlooked and you'll most probably love them.

Whoops. I feel ashamed now. Seems I've mistaken it for something else. Although I thought I've seen Judau somewhere. My bad.

Personally, it's my least favorite Gundam series and a huge step down from the original. From what I remember, all the characters seemed to make the worst decision whenever they did something, which made it arguably the most frustrating viewing experience I've ever had. Also, you'd think they would learn to put a better security detail on the Gundam.

My opinion is in the minority, so I won't say you won't like it. Give it a few episodes to get a sense for it, just know that the depressing tone stays consistent throughout.

A society which fails to uphold empathy as its foremost guiding principle is doomed to ignore or even defend the exploitation of its most vulnerable members.

I say watching the zeta movies along with 34-37 and 41-42 makes worlds of difference for a zeta viewing experience. The movie animation is very beautiful while the 80s isn't. Since zeta suffers more from filler than MSG. CCA barely references zeta next to MSG so a lot of people got away with skipping Z/ZZ

best thing to come about from this particular series, hands down, YMMV;
