Overall I thought Evangelion was a good anime. However, it is often regarded as one of the greatest anime to ever be made. Does it really deserve that much recognition?

Is it THE greatest? Probably not but let's be honest - the series ended in 1995 and the anime community is STILL discussing it to this day. If that is not enough to have it mentioned as one of the greatest of all time I don't know what to say.

It’s a pretty good anime , the original ending is very thought provoking . I donno if I would personally rank the tabs the best anime but I would definitely recommend a watch. I’d skip the movie though , it’s two hours of depression

I've seen a lot of debate on this topic. Which ending is better?

I'd say it deserves at least that much recognition for what it was able to do. Although it isn't a perfect show by any means, the depth of NGE's psychoanalysis def sets it apart from almost any show in its genre. It wasn't the first to explore the topic (I've heard Gundam and other shows did it before), its one of the first to do it to that extent. Plus, it's a really meaningful show if you can relate to its characters.

Some people tend to overanalyze it though, trying to find reasoning for the Christian symbolism, choice of colors, directing, etc. when a lot of it was said by Anno to just be for aesthetics.

EVA was in the right place at the right time for it to be as successful as it was, but that doesn't mean it isn't an amazing anime. It was a different time back then. In modern times we have so much choice its almost impossible to go a season without at least one really good anime and there's usually at least one great anime a year. Back then there were maybe 1 to 3 anime per genre per year and if it was great, it became the favorite anime of a good portion of the anime community.

Add to that it's quality music and visuals, it's strange mix of action and cerebral mind screw nature, and the birth of the waifu wars with best girls Rei, Asuka, and Misato and you have an anime that would be talked about for 25+ years. Would it hold up if it was released today for the first time? Maybe not, but that's because there's 25 years of anime that have learned from EVA and have strived to be better. I don't think attack on titan would have had it's sense of scale in the battles if it weren't for the hand to hand battles of the kaiju in EVA. (yeah, I said kaiju, EVA is NOT a mecha show no matter what people think)
EVA also brought the suffering of characters to a whole new level.

To me, it will always be the anime that made me go: yeah, I think these imported cartoons are something special.

I love it the way I interpret it, but it's nowhere near the best😂 I just "like" that everyone is a bad person (also the reason I probably will never watch it again though)

But yeah definitely nowhere near the greatest

I love Evangelion, I think it's one of the best physiological anime out there. the art style, animation, soundtrack, and storyline is absolutely beautiful in my opinion.

It is. It's amazing that they came with something like that, in a year 1995. But if you didn't like it that much, I understand because it can a lot of time look boring.

The general consensus is that it's one of the greats. Personally, I couldn't get into it and didn't enjoy it but the reviews speak for themselves.

It's not one of my favourites, but it's still a very good show and I have to recognize its impact on the anime world. A lot of modern anime wouldn't even be possible without NGE. The direct influences are perhaps less important now than the indirect ones. I think its handling of psychological issues and growing pains is still impressive by today's standards, even if some other aspects have been done better in other shows since then.

First, its impact was perhaps even greater in the west, because it introduced anime to a much larger audience as a medium that is not just for kids. Second, it convinced studios that a series with darker themes could sell really well. It was a part of a cultural shift that was happening in the west as well, so maybe it would have happened anyway. Nevertheless, NGE was at the forefront of that development. Perhaps many of the things it did weren't the first time the issues were explored in anime, but it was such a popular series that studios started giving creators more freedom to explore psychological and philosophical issues. Thus a large part of its impact comes from the popularity of such an unusual series for its time.

It was also significant as a deconstruction of the mecha genre, bringing to light the irreverence in the typical setup of teenagers becoming heroes to fight for adults. Shows as different as Madoka Magica or Fate/Stay Night have benefited from this. Would they have been made nevertheless? Perhaps. But NGE certainly created the environment in which such shows may get funding.

And then there's more direct influence, for example single-handedly making the outwardly emotionless girl trope so popular that Rei Ayanami clones are still everywhere from romance to action to isekai.

I don't think it would be one of the greatest anime I've ever seen and I wouldn't regard it as particularly outstanding but I absolutely recognize it's importance and influence. We're still talking about it in 2021 after all.

I do certainly think it's imagery and it's soundtrack remain iconic and for good reason. I wish I had seen it as it was released as I believe it's true impact would've been felt then

The fact that it is still relevant and people are still discussing it should give it away, although it can be a pretty polarising show.

Just look at the statistics for Eva.
You can see that most people rated it 10/10 while rating of anime is only 8.32 now. It shows that people do have very different opinions about it, since if you click on every other anime with similar or even higher rating you could see that if it is rated around 8.5 than scores are mostly 9 or 8.
I don't know how to explain it properly in English, but you either like this show or you are lying to yourself.
Basically SAO, but in that case most people hated that sh*t.

I mean it was made 25 years ago and it was one of the first mainstream anime so naturally the conversation of whether it's one of the best has been had many, many times across the years.

The people that expect it to live up to that after 25 years of new anime put too much pressure on it.

I love the presentation and especially the music, it's very impressive.

The characters really couldn't convince me. They had some depth and development, but were so unsympathetic that I wouldn't have cared whether one of them died or not. Their charisma was set to absolute zero, the Mangaka would have been a bad "Sims" player.

To this day I am sure that the series is not a masterpiece as most people claim. However, it is a work that has earned its reputation. It stands above the crowd for a reason.
At that time there were especially few works that could really compete with it.
