I bought a Mayflash F500 Elite stick a few days ago and I can't get my PC to recognize the device. The error is always something different such as "driver error" or "unknown device" and it seems like my computer has big problems with USB devices in general (but this, in particular, is the worst).

Does anyone here have the same arcade stick and can help me?

I don't know what operating system you are using, but have you downloaded the drivers manually from Mayflash's website, or have you tried to automatically download them through the device manager? If you haven't tried downloading them manually from their website, I would do that and check that they are the correct drivers for your device.

I'm using Windows 10.

I tried downloading the driver before, but unfortunately, I can't click on "update", because the stick isn't recognized. It did work for a second or two, but even I was fast enough to click it, wouldn't I brick the device because it disconnects while updating?

It’s been a while since i’ve had to install drivers, but depending on the manufacturer you either have to download and run an installer, or manually select the driver files in the device manager. If updating them doesn’t work, uninstall the current drivers, download the correct drivers from the internet and you should be able to specify the location of the downloaded drivers in the device manager. If you can’t find the device or it keeps disappearing, it may be labelled as an ‘Unknown Device’ as you said before.

As for your worries about bricking the device, its not possible as far as i’m aware, as the drivers are installed on your own computer in order to interpret the device, and not installed on the device itself. I’ve installed many devices and had to unplug during driver installs, and the worst thats happened is having to reinstall them.

I think I can only download the driver with the installer, not manually. I managed to click on the update button while the device was recognized for a second, but it only says "device rom erase error".

I'm not even sure if I need the latest firmware to begin with. According to Mayflash's website, it only adds compatibility to PS5/Xbox X, which I don't need.

The issue must really be related to my USB ports then.

Well, you could pop in a Ubuntu Linux live CD, choose "Try Ubuntu without installing," and see if your arcade stick works in Linux. That way, you'd know if it's actually your USB ports at fault, or if it's a Windows problem.
