Romance genre and it's primary demographic (or lets just talk romance)

Inspired by another thread asking for everyone's favourite genre. Romance is the winner of the vote and lots of people have posted it as one of their favourite genres.

Now for me I'm not into romance and I don't go looking for it. However I do have a few anime I've seen where romance was the predominant genre for it. But my interest was mostly focused on the non romantic parts of it and the characters themselves.

It's just not appealing to me to spend 12 to 24 episodes watching a will they won't they scenario. I nearly dropped Your Lie in April because the romance just dragged the whole thing out longer then it needed with the drama of it all. Whereas I watched all of Ouran High School Host Club easily due to the comedy element and enjoyable characters.

I'm not opposed to romance I just can't enjoy double digit worth of episodes of focusing solely on it. Which brings me back to why I made the thread.

I'm curious as to what makes romance so appealing to so many. Why does romance appeal to others? Maybe the romantics can tell me what they don't enjoy in their romance too. Does romance appeal more to young girls or is it across the board? (I'm female but I prefer action and darker more complex anime.) Lets discuss romance in anime!

i think romance is mainly targeted at teens to young adults of all genders, i'm a teen but i personally find romance anime pretty boring; im not really sure what the appeal is. one reason i can think of is like they try to relate to the characters or see themselves as them. although i do enjoy some romance stuff, one of my favourite manga is a romance so i'd say it depends

Personally I agree a lot of the romance anime I finish I feel like I have whiplash afterwards because it seems like the creator threw everything at the couple to not let them be together up until the end, and usually while the ending is satisfying the journey there leaves a bad taste in my mouth because I just watched 24 episodes of something that could've been wrapped up in a quarter of that.

Romance alone can make things boring for me at times, mainly because it forces some troupes we see all the time.if someone does a fresh take on it,i have no problem watching double digit episodes.I don't think its restricted to any demographic

I mean, I'm a guy but I enjoy watching romance anime and have been for a long time now. Sure, I don't watch it as much as I used to but I still watch some romance anime here and there.

Why romance anime appeals to me? I guess I just love watching 2 characters getting together and discovering their feelings for one another and following their journey from when they met and how they got together.

While I am getting a bit bored of romance anime, there's this romance anime I'm watching this season that re-kindled my love for romance anime and reminded me why I love watching the genre in the first place.

My only favorite romance-centered anime would be Ah! My Goddess. But for that, I think the comedy appealed to me the most. The romance was good though. I also liked Vampire Knight. But I think the plot twists and dramatic elements of it appealed to me more than the romance. It was also a little too yaoi for me at times.

Majority of romance series aren't actually that much about romance, to be honest.. Just that this tag shows that there will be something about at least one couple, or romance comedy, or triangle, or whatever.. Now if show is tagged romance + shoujo or something - now this is often your pure romance (not always, just much more often).. Or sometimes some other genres.. In majority of other cases - romance is just side dish, really.. That's how it feels to me.. To me, who likes romance, but really only because it just shows that there will be some stuff dedicated to relationship.. I don't actually expect too much romance often, when show is tagged as romance..
Also, if to speak about "target audience" - it's the same, really.. That romance is usually just side thing in the anime most watched with "romance" tag.. Like, by most members romance anime: https://myanimelist.net/anime/genre/22/Romance SAO - side thing, really.. Your Name - side thing again, really, main being visuals, but could be - but an exception, looking at other tops.. Toradora - kinda, but also true romance really starts at the end, and before that it's more drama/comedy.. Relationships of romance is really only in the end.. Your Lie in April - can't say about this one, haven't watched.. Elfen Lied (romance is very far from being main there.. Clannad - could be, but also starts more in season 2.. And before that it's more drama, slice of life, different stories of girls.. Danmachi - haven't watched.. But seems like more action than romance.. So yeah.. These are all shows that have some couple stuff in them.. But it doesn't really feel like romance is really primary thing in there..

I like Romance but I often get tired of the typical "rom coms" as it often is just overdone and tiring.

My Favourite would be Fantasy/Supernatural + Romance (Akatsuki no Yona, Romeo x Juliet, Hamefura, Akagami no Shirayuki hime, etc) as it keeps things a bit different from the typical Rom Com School Setting or I also enjoy when Romance does exist but it is not the main Focus + builds it up veeeery slowly (Ouran, Kyokou Suiri, Special A, Gekkan Shoujo, Skip Beat, etc)

I love the comedy aspect and I am crazy for that sexual tension between the characters. It's like a drug for me and I gulp that down like a maniac

Honestely, I usually stick to romance anime because of the things happening around the romance, the romance usually is just the Icing on the cake, exept when we are watching a couple that's already in a relation ship, them I like it more because it usually have a diferent, in deph and lovely dinamic compared with friend ships and crushes.

The romance genre remains popular in anime for the same reason that love stories have always been popular in any form of art and medium. If I had to guess, romance will still exist when all other genres fall out of fashion and nobody even remembers what isekai was.

You must remember thisu, a kisu is still a kisu
And when two lovers woo they still say daisuki da yo

Your Lie in April is not about the romance...
Even tagging it a romance on MAL is not accurate and no one should be watching it if they want a romance, the same way how people shouldn't watch Koe no Katachi expecting a romance.

romance as a standalone genre is very hard to work with.
you usually have to combine it with either drama or comedy otherwise it becomes dead boring.

I hate the will they won't they scenario so much that whenever I decide to watch a romance anime, I check the last episode to see if they get together, if they don't, I don't even bother watching it.

Romance genre usually emphasize the characters' feelings and emotions for their development. I am a fan of stories that can give me those sort of things, usually found in the drama genre. Also having a pair I can root for is always extra fun for me.

I was drawn to Your Lie in April for the PTSD recovery and the music. Even the drama was alright... mostly but the romance is it's weakness. Didn't need to have the love triangle.
