More effective in terms of memorization, morale, understanding...
I'm of the opinion the optimum is a diaporama presentation in the video format with a little face?
The whole ritual of the class, the content discussed, the anecdotes, the personality of the teacer, the face of the teacher...
Well, nothing beats mixing every memorization technique.

depends on the class and professor, but mostly yes. having the camera on boosts engagement, especially if the teacher/professor is urging participation. if a student has no choice but to pay attention, then he/she will pick up on more than he/she would if the cameras were off, with no means of being monitored.

this is just a personal anecdote from me, but when i have a class without facecams i legit do some other task in the background and never bat an ear to what's actually being discussed. i can get away with not paying attention due to my camera being off. then i have another class with the facecams, with class discussion questions, with active participation; that's a whole different experience.

Personally to me it does not matter, with facecams or not I still hate learning online and I haven't noticed any improvement.

I’m 22 and not in college so I haven’t experienced an online class like this.. but for me personally I think I would be more focused on how awkward I look on webcam rather than listening to the lesson. I’m sure it’s probably easier to stay engaged for most but I just feel really uncomfortable on camera haha.

You don't have to activate your own camera, it's mainly about seeing or not the teacher's face.

No, as long as you keep your facecam closed, but you're still paying attention to the course, then nothing changes. Only if you close it with the reason to do something else.

Not at all, it depends on the work ethic of the students themselves. Having a face am or not either they have the choice to get distracted or focus and get the information needed.

You have more of an implicit imperative, I believe, when you see a teacher's face. The human attention will make you more aware, conscious of expectations.
