According to reporting by Daily, Oshii said that he ignored recent anime trends when creating Vladlove. "It's been a long time since I last did something I wanted to do more of," he said. "We did what we wanted to do. I think that was the right thing."

Regarding modern anime, Oshii said bluntly, "It is neat and tidy, and can by watched by everyone. It is bland and harmless, neither poison nor medicine." He also shared the reasoning behind starting this production: "It started with the feeling of 'Let's show what would happen if you piss off an old man.' Let's make an anime that can also serve as a strong medicine."

Maybe there is too much anime that is bland in both story and art, so I can see how he wanted to do something original and distinct.

It's certainly true that most modern anime lean into uniformity. The sheer fact some don't find originality a boon to a show, and that such discussions even arise, is downright depressing.

Oshii's quite right distancing himself from current trends. If only more creators followed suit.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

I've mostly stopped watching modern anime unless it's something particularly compelling because it feels sterile and boring. This is a welcome change.

In the start of the episode, I was asking if I'm watching the right show.
The first scene and the OP are too "dark" for a comedy anime.

But I really loved it. All characters seems cool.
I hope they don't go to the rom-com line of story. I'm sick of all recent rom-coms were they have one-episode dramas, but everything is fine at end of the day.

I haven't seen the premiere episode yet since I'm waiting till it actually airs, but I can't agree anymore with this statement from him and I respect him way more for calling the medium out like that, since it's true to the highest degree.

What makes me feel a little bit sad with the anime medium for the past few years, is how a ton of the shows that air are just bland or way too safe, nothing experimental or exciting or fascinating or over-the-top to look forward too with maintaining the quality as the same time, with only a few exceptions. It's nice hearing that this show was something he really wanted to do and has the full creative license to go whatever direction he wants to with this show that stays away from the common anime trends you'd find nowadays, especially since there's just an overdose of mediocre/boring/bad romcoms, disengaging slice of life anime, terrible fantasy shows for all demographics (with some bordering hentai levels) and unpalatably bland/dull shounen adaptations that only have pretty visuals at best to cover up for its painfully boring material.

Hopefully his anime isn't just about staying away from trends but also about creating something exciting and crazy to watch while not just only having the rebellious persona to hype it up. Just embracing a rebel persona without much else is not good either, but since Mamoru Oshii is responsible for this work and he's got a ton of experience and good quality stuff to his name, I'm excited for what he has in store in his crazy mind.

I was never really a fan of Mamoru Oshii’s works, tbf. Sure, the issue nowadays is too many series playing it too mellow (for the most part), but doing something of the contrary isn’t by any means close to a solution.

Raw / dangerous / rough, etc =/= good show/series. We’ve been through this before countless times already. Gonna be honest, it’s often better to play it safe (ofc not all the time).

I haven’t seen ep 1 of Vlad Love yet, but the trailer already tells me this is likely bound to be a burning wreck. Hopefully not as god awful as Blood C, one of his other works.
