spamming I believe that Neon Genesis Evangelion can only be considered good if one doesn't give a damn about good characterization or proper character development, since the series basically just ignores the basic aspects of good characterization in the process of trying to be extra deep, intellectual & thought provoking. The show gives a lot of effort in order to dig deep into the characters' flawed psychologies which just completely overlooking the important of character development, as barely any character, especially Shinji himself, barely have any character development throughout the series at all. The character are shown to be flawed in a certain manner at the start and they are just continued to be depicted flawed in the very exact same manner throughout the entire series, without pretty much any development/change in terms of their flaws at all. Just because a character is deeply flawed & we're given a strong insight into their flaws doesn't mean that they would continue to be interesting/compelling throughout the entire series, especially when the characters act in the very flawed manner throughout the entire series without any sort of development to show in that aspect. Sure, the characters may look interesting initially due to their deeply flawed aspects, but gradually due to their lack of any development in terms of their flaws, their characters gradually grow incredibly annoying & stale throughout the course of the series. This is why basically character development is always an important factor when it comes to good characterization, since it's always interesting to see a character gradually change & develop throughout the course. NGE barely makes any attempt to properly develop the characters, especially Shinji, continuing to depict the flawed aspects of the characters in the very same, stagnant manner, as a result of which the character come of as really stagnant & repetitive in terms of their flawed aspects. We hardly ever to see a new aside of the characters as they basically act in the very same flawed manner they're introduced in, right from the beginning to the end of the show. With the lack of any sort of remarkable development in terms of their flaws, the characterization of the characters come of as stagnant as piece of rock, which makes the characters grow real boring, real fast, which makes their flawed asides gradually unbearably grating, annoying & stale throughout the course of the series. This basically sums up the core problem NGE suffers throughout its run, since it basically it tries hard to be extra deep & thought provoking via digging deep into the characters' flawed & inner psychologies, whilst overlooking one of the basic aspects of good characterization that is character development. Even if in case are given a deep insight the flawed aspects of the characters, that still doesn't change the fact that the core flawed aspects of the characters remain the very same throughout if the characters barely ever are shown to develop in terms of their flaws, which over time makes it very predictable how the characters act or react to situations ----> their lack of development just makes the characters very boring, predictably repetitive & stale gradually over the course of the series, even if we are given strong insight into their flaws. This is the aspect where NGE practically fails, as in the process of trying to give us an extra deep insight into the psychologies/flaws it overlooks one of the very fundamentals of good characterization that is character development, which is where it just falls into the realm of pretentiousness. on forums |
