What are people's opinions on this anime? I personally watched it a little while ago with no prior experience with the Japan Sinks franchise or the director Masaaki Yuasa's previous works. Overall I thought it was OK, but with some major issues. Specifically, the rate at which characters died meant that there was never much time to get to know them and therefore care about their deaths. The weird cult episodes in the middle of the anime were also kind of boring and unnecessary with almost nothing important plot-wise happening. I am definitely interested in finding out how similar the show is to the past Japan Sinks films and novels though and if it is better or worse than them.

I haven't even watched it and my brain immediately thought "don't you mean Japan Stinks 2020?" so that should be a pretty good indicator of the general consensus. Also Yuasa was just an assistant director in practice, Pyeonggang Heo was the (debuting) director for this.

Easily the worst anime Yuasa has his name attached with, so far.

I love yuasa but this was just terrible. I refuse to believe this was his work.

First two episodes got me good, and then rape scenes happened. In fact there were two of them..and the sex scene in Episode 5 was so uncalled for. I didn't see any character development until Episode 5

I haven't finished it yet but so far it's pretty bad in my opinion. It was a very "straight to the point" anime, pretty tragic in fact. But even though it's tragic I find it very hard to sympathize with the characters. Everyone died pretty fast and you didn't even get to know them. I can't find myself cheering for them or even wanting them to make it.

So, we're 0 for 2 when it comes to catastrophic earthquake anime, then?!
Haven't watched this, but Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 sucks.

agree, i cant believe he made this mess... the same guy that made devilman crybaby, eizouken, kaiba, ping pong, the tatami galaxy and more made THIS. so disappointing. by far the worst series hes ever worked on.

I kinda liked the first two episodes and the last few episodes, they were absolutely 10/10 but the middle especially the cult arc. Definitely not Yuaasa's best work.

I'm disappointed. :/

The first two or three episodes were pretty decent and I expected much more like that until...

Since Japan sinking isn't enough drama, ofc. You need every possible drama you could imagine, including like three attempted rape scenes and...

The first episodes were exaggerated too (for example that one time someone died above them and the blood rained down trough a tree or something. Edgy.), but I felt more for the people in this situation and they showed more feelings.
Later on, the former events seemed to have little emotional impact and they kept including useless and annoying side characters I never was interested in.

Also I disliked how they included that cult and politics into it. First, maybe an unpopular opinion, but Japan nationalism is, given the history with the west, different. I fully understand, when non-western cultures and in that case, Japan, are distanced to other nations, because they harmed them enough.
Anyway, I thought such stories are better off with more human drama and not with half-baked political statements. That cult arc well yes, it was dumb.

And I might be petty here but since they make a big deal out of her injury... didn't she got any chances ANYWHERE to get iodine and antibiotic ointment or the like? Like in the grandpa's shop, a house, a gas station... anywhere? I mean, she's not a child and also could look by herself for it too.

Seriously?

It's unpopular opinion-day for me: I don't like Yuasa at all and especially not Devilman Crybaby. And I just can't get into his other stuff.

I liked it at first but it has so many flaws and plot holes that it started to bother me. 6/10 for sure

Japan Sinks was really good at the beginning especially the first two episodes. But I really did not enjoy how every character got treated, everything was so predictable. You just knew that the story telling and the little character development before hand would ultimately lead to a death.
And the facial expressions was terrible, and oh my god that little kid who could just not stop speaking broken engrish.
The piano sound track was fire to be honest tho.

死神

What do you think are the most important things in life? Money, dreams, sympathy towards others...

Yes, they're all important things as well... But the most important thing is responsibility for your own actions.

Kind of sucked. A lot of stuff was predictable, like Literally every time they took a photo someone died in that same episode.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the really bizarre and inconsistent artwork and animation. At times it was just awful, causing people to look like they were disfigured.

People died way too quickly to even know who they are or care that they've died. Plot holes like why didn't Ayumu say something about her ankle to anyone or get medicine at the grandpa's store or something?? They were even at that weird cult place that had a shit ton of morphine but she chose not to say anything?

My biggest complaint. Every ep takes a moment to remind you how her foot hurts and she never makes any effort to address it until, surprise, they have to address it in finale.....since her character arc is “running in face of adversity.” Very weak writing.

Got to Ep.03 and the plot nonsense is killing me!
The first 2 were Ok, even if they were (as mentioned) pretty inconsistent from moment to moment. Jumping around wildly is ok, if there's a reason for it.
After Kite arrives it's just nonsense. Doesn't she still have to pee? Or was that a ruse to look after her leg? Doesn't Kite know of a safe place? hasn't he been flying around for days?
I suspect Ep.04 may be the last for me, it's getting hard to overlook the many dumb things. Didn't they look the storyboards over for glaring holes? :/
