I mean, seriously, I've never seen an anime with a cast this big before.

I haven't seen a lot of anime, though.
Is there an anime with a bigger cast, or what. XD

Bleach? Naruto? One Piece? lol

I think Umineko hasn't the largest cast...

Seeing as you've only completed 17 series, no surprise there.

Long-running shonen series like Bleach or D.gray-man have way bigger casts than Umineko.

Anpanman has around 2000 I've heard.

LOGH has, with side stories and all, around 660.

Umineko will get a lot worse once the fourth arc rolls in, too.

Infinite Ryvius

Wiki said:
With an ensemble cast of nearly 500 different characters, Infinite Ryvius was an ambitious undertaking by Sunrise. Nearly all the characters have some screen time, be it cameo appearances or speaking roles, and each (with few exceptions) has his or her own personality.

If we go by characters that at least get a chapter or more devoted to them, even though they aren't main, I would have to hand it up to Bleach or Negima.

Any long running series has too many characters of course... I don't think we could, for example, count the number of one-off characters total of Meitantei Conan (but maybe someone already did that lol).

WTF, I dont remember Infinite Ryvius having more than fifty, let alone FIVE HUNDRED characters.

Maybe we need to establish what a character is, as opposed to an extra. ¬_¬

I actually don't watch shonen series, cause they are so freaking boring.
Heck, I don't even call 'em anime.

But that's just me.

Yeah, long Shounen series by default tend to gather a big cast. This one has a big cast set from the get-go, but it isn't that big. Just slightly bigger than your usual 26 episode show. Baccano has a pretty big cast for a 13 episode thing (and the fact almost all of them get their spotlight is nice).

But like everyone says, if you think this show has the biggest cast ever, then obviously you need to see more shows.

And about that hate for shounen, I actually think that's one of the most popular type of anime. At the very least, it's the kind of show that comes to mind when mentioning the subject (DBZ anyone?).

This anime is not even close to top tier in the area of large cast anime.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

I think Pokemon, with all those "characters of the week", nurses Joys, officers Jennies, and of course, Pokemons.

And the 5th VN continues that trend.

Ok, what if we discount those 'character of the week' anime like Gintama, etc, what are anime that have one long narrative with the largest set of characters?

So far Legend of the Galactic Heroes remains the one to beat for me, for having a large set of characters that are actually developed to varying degrees and not just have one line of dialogue before disappearing.

Juuni Kokuki would come second. Or maybe Gundam and its sequel Zeta Gundam.

Off the top of my head anyway. I want to see more anime with large ensemble casts to be honest.
