In my case surprisingly that character is not that popular, though it is based on Astroboy. Even after so many years it is very underrated and not all episodes are subbed to English and the few that are are based on the Italian dub.

I am talking about Jetter Mars.

subbed the OP/ED too for those interested. Fortunately in our dub they did not even bother adding a localised OP/ED so we had the original at least.

Though only 6 episodes were shown here, I immediately became connected with that character and his joy and sufferings. Unlike Astro, he was a robot from the beginning and had not a rival like Atlas. This made him more vulnerable since he had no memories or a core that would make him human.
Unfortunately series was scrapped after 27 episodes, though some elements would added to the much better Astro Boy 1980 later on.
After watching the rest of the series, quality starts to drop towards the last episodes with an inconclusive finale too. But first half is very good at least.

Still, after so many years I consider him my favorite anime character of my childhood (though at that time I preferred western cartoon characters) and my opinion has not changed since and I did not regret it for liking him.

that's actually a great question. I don't think I consciously thought about that as a kid. I think I always liked the villains the most hmm

Brock from Pokemon, and yeah, he's still my hero.

Cynthia from Pokemon has always been a favourite ever since I was a kid too.

I remember saving up my lunch allowance in as 1st~2nd grader just to get rental subscription to anime videotapes.
There's Doremon too, but he was a manga/comic book chara.

The only character I was obsessed with in my childhood was a Pokemon - Entei (from the movie Spell of the Unown: Entei). Fought my cousin till near death because he said Entei wasn't the best Pokemon. Won as always.

I had more favorites in my teen years:
- Lucy (Elfen Lied). I had this picture of her as my userpic on every social media for god knows how long

- Alucard (Hellsing). My first 2d crush
- Mello (Death Note). I also had a crush on him
- Brandon Heat (Gungrave). Again, had a huge crush on him
- Wrath (FMA 2003). I don't remember why I liked him... Probably because of his cute looks

Can't say I like any of them now. Maybe Alucard, he's awesome. I'm also not sure about Gungrave, because I literally don't remember anything about this anime except how the MC's name was pronounced (BURANDON! lol wtf)

The first anime character that I remember I liked was Virgo Shaka. He's hella strong so of course he piqued my interest as a kid.
When I (re)watched Saint Seiya many years later, actually few years ago, I still liked him. The Gold Saints are my favourite group of character overall and, amongst them, Virgo Shaka is sill the one I like the most.

Anime wasn't really a thing when I was little... at least not in the mainstream US.
So, I guess going off what few anime I had seen at the time. I'd have to say my favorite anime character, was the giant bugs from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I must have watched that movie 100 times because those bugs were so cool.

Okay listen up everyone it's big cringe time alright. Back in 2012-2013 I learn of this thing called anime, by a Youtuber whom I at the time looked up to. He had an ask.fm page for questions, a fair portion of which was anime-related (even though his content has nothing to do w/ it), so he had directed all those questions to his MAL page.

And here I am very perplexed of this new medium. I scavenge his profile to know what's all the fuzz about. And since I was like 12 and very fond of cartoons I decide to give it a shot, looking at the titles he rated 10. Most look mature and heavy but there's this distinct show which is all cutesy that is nonetheless a 10, called Lucky Star. And here I get really creeped out, bc that YT'er is almost in his 30s, and these drawings look like pre-teens. I'm like "Wait is this guy that I admire a fucking pedophile?!" And then I watch it to clear my suspicions. I finish the show absolutely adoring Tsukasa Hiiragi. I mean, it is my first conscious introduction to anime as well as first to moe. Given how much of a moefag I came to be it's only fitting that my first "anime crush" if you will is a high school girl that looks 12 y/o that I'm now too ashamed to admit.

As a child, I liked

Mewtwo (Pokemon)
Machinedramon/Greymon S1 lineage (Digimon)
Scourge aka Black Convoy (Transformers:Car Robots)
Mr. Referee (Medabots)
Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh)
Metaknight (Kirby Right Back at Ya) ...(didn't like Kirby in this version despite liking Kirby in the games)
Kevin Mask and Kintaro (Kinnikuman II)

I don't like them as much as I did back then, but I still do over any character in their respective series

I used to be obsessed with Detective Conan, and thus ended up loving the trio of Shinichi, Heiji, and Kaito. They all seemed very cool back then. Sadly as I grew older, my focus shifted towards how well they're written rather than how cool they are. So yeah I no longer feel very fond of them. As is the case with Detective Conan overall as a series.

Pharaoh from Yu-Gi-Oh, or Sasuke from Naruto.

I liked the edgier characters in whatever kids anime I could watch on Cartoon Network or whatever tv station. I wanted to be like them. Ah, the memories.

Still kind of holds true, but characters like Sasuke I started to see as more rude and immature instead of cool, calm and quiet like i did initially.

Characters like Itachi, or Naofumi from shield hero are my tops now, whether they're written good or not. It's just what i'm into.

Goemon Ishikawa, he was cool af back then and he sure as hell still is.
"The problem with defining even an aspect of your personality by something that you like, is that criticism of that product appears to you to be criticism of you personally. I find it to be a very harmful attitude, [...] you can't rationally discuss a product because you've started to define yourself by its very existence."

Ash Ketchum - I was a huge fangirl, now I'm not even interested, neither in Ash nor in Pokemon

Sakura Kinomoto and Yue - Still love them to this day.

Black Jack - still like him

Edward Elric - kind of still like him, I lost interest in the series as a whole after watching FMAB, used to love FMA.

Shibuya Yuuri - Meh, this guy needs to learn a little more about his own hypocritical "justice" although I still use him as my avatar out of (a bad) habit.

I also liked Wolfram when I watched kkm as a 10 year old but almost 14 years later this boy has worked his way up to the very top of my most hated list, I was totally disgusted by his behavior when I read the manga and LNs.
