Anime Guild's Summer 2019 Toriyama Power Ranking Committee Part 2 of 4

This is an anime about street dancing on fire, hold your breath!

Summer sign-up sheet for anyone in need of a refresher

I wish I could just insert some generic text in here. Alas, I have no generic paragraphs prepared so let's try to get through the intro: on fire. This stage of the season seems to generally be all about the different shows ramping up in their various ways from the cute getting cuter while the shounens insist that they now have more plot but fail to deliver any in a palatable form. Aku is as cute as ever apart from the fact she isn't getting enough screentime and... wait, where's the compliments? Meh, they're there somewhere, especially through the raw scent of adolescence an- huh? I sound creepy now? Please, I'm just talking about pirate boys.

So for those of you who are interested in reading submitted comments to this edition's PRC, the names highlighted in blue are truncated comments, you can find the full essay in the "Individual comments" section! *glances at HaXX*

Next PRC hand-in for all classes is on 9th September!

Let's hop to it!

1. Vinland Saga
(985.75 Points) [Top: 1]
[Shift: --]

Jokobo “Uhhh... 3 last episodes are essentially the same thing,
they need to start new part of story, preferably RIGHT NOW.”

HaXXspetten “Great show. So far it seems to do the manga justice and knowing Studio Wit's track record it'll probably continue to do so.
I imagine this being a good starter recommendation for new anime watchers given its atypical setting.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “I am absolutely blown away by WIT studio's execution of this show. Impactful episodes, Thorfinn's character
progression and the pacing is very well done. The way the fight scenes are animated and directed are fantastic!”

Akuma-chi “Epic, insightful and full of gritty nordic developments... unfortunately when I was watching it.
I was very attuned to the show and just kept shitposting the hell out of it. I know, I ruined it for myself :')”

BlueSkylark “Not much to say other then last time. Best show of the season by a landslide
and we are only at the beginning of the Saga so far.”

2. Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.
(813.5 Points) [Top: 2]
[Shift: --]

Jokobo “Dynamic story, but I'm worrying that it can be a bit too dynamic for the character development part.
Still, at this moment it is very enjoyable and 'deep' enough for me.”

HaXXspetten “Brilliant storytelling, utilizing the literature club as the connection between the club members' lives rather than the focus.
An original and awkwardly wholesome depiction of sex within anime. I'd like more anime to take a similar approach.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “I just find this really sweet and funny. Some of the couples I prefer over others.
But overall, it's a really enjoyable watch.”

Akuma-chi “These girls are so cute, they're not super tropey either, like they have wills of their own.
It's such a joy to watch them struggle, think and act in order to persue something that feels so "big" to them.”

BlueSkylark “Nuanced Character driven drama about the difficulties of adolescents.
Depicted in a somewhat extreme, yet believable way, which is rare for anime.”

3. Fruits Basket (2019)
(720 Points) [Top: 3]
[Shift: --]

Jokobo “Just end it and finish my suffering please. Moeblob heroine, boring and dislikeable characters
and a story that hasn't moved forward since long time.”

HaXXspetten “A rather generic and cliché shoujo romance, possibly due to the source's age.
Nonetheless, quite well executed and sometimes that's all an anime needs to carry its own weight.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “Ritchan is now, hands down, my favorite character in this series.”

Akuma-chi “Awwmagawsh~ Kisa-san is so adorable and Ritcchan-san reminds me of someone I used to see around at uni, so that was nice.
How many of the zodiac left do we got to complete the intro? Will Tohru reach enlightenment before that happens?!”

BlueSkylark “Extemly engaging and with a lot of conveyed feelings at it's strongest.
Yet almost mundane and trivial at it's weakest. FruBa is a show that flip flops between blandness and greatness.”

4. Kimetsu no Yaiba
(618.25 Points) [Top: 4]
[Shift: +2]

k3ls3yr1ann3 “This art over the last few episodes has been superb! Especially in Ep 19, I give major props to UFOtable for breathing life into
some of the best early fight scenes of the manga. Six more episodes to go and I'm really hoping it gets green-lit for a second season.”

Akuma-chi “Oh. My. GOD. The plot armour is thick (sorry, no thicc)! But the hype is real,
the storytelling doubly so (except when not), and the villains aren't entirely chumps.”

BlueSkylark “Standard shounen. A lot of fight scenes, quirky sidekicks that are mainly there to provide comedy and some shallow message
about the importance of human(demon) connections. Oh and some convenient plot devices and timings. Still looks good though.”

5. Enen no Shouboutai
(575.5 Points) [Top: 4]
[Shift: -1]

Jokobo “Oh, they're starting to show the shounen parts, fighting between each division etc.”

HaXXspetten “The animation is nice... but as someone who isn't a battle shounen fan,
this is just another fairly generic battle shounen in the end.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “Was it just me, or did it feel like there was a lot of use of dramatic still shots in episode 6?
I understand wanting to make a point, but it really hurt the flow of the fights in my opinion.”

Akuma-chi “Haha... hahahaha... HAHAHAHA!!! Look, this anime is perfect for you if you love good animation and
characters so quirky that they are waaaay over the top... because the plot execution sure isn't what you'd be watching it for.”

BlueSkylark “Still quirky and gorgeously animated, yet kinda burned out a bit recently. ^^'”

6. Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?
(560 Points) [Top: 6]
[Shift: +1]

Jokobo “I'm confused about this one... well, IT IS kinda serious about the topic of show,
but this fanservice is what rejects me from liking it more.”

HaXXspetten “With a lack of interest in gym training, Dumbbell is a bit difficult for me to relate to.
The appeal is mostly from the characters and comedy which make it... just about passable.”

Akuma-chi “For psuedo fitness and health gurus like me, we can never tire of this show. I don't know how to feel about
Hibiki's selective monstrous strength talent however. Not meant to be false expectations but might for some...”

BlueSkylark “This show is as standard as a comedy can be. It is entertaining and over the top sure,
but the gags run it's course after a while and it's hard keeping up with it.”

7. Kanata no Astra
(515.75 Points) [Top: 5]
[Shift: -2]

Jokobo “Okey, so I don't have a slightest idea who's the traitor right now,
but that's why I'm even more interested in the plot.”

HaXXspetten “I want to like this anime, but its characters lack rationality and the poorly researched setting wastes its premise.
I can't help but enjoy a show about space exploration as a concept, but hoped for something more.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “Aries' mother is legit the only one out of these teens parents that has faith in her child.
I am legit repulsed by their lack of caring for their offspring. I hope they make it back to earth just so they can rub it in their parents faces.”

Akuma-chi “Getting used to dumb is good for my enjoyment of this show. Although it has tried to establish
a more tense atmosphere in recent episodes, they then turn around and slap it around the back of the head.”

BlueSkylark “Weird case. Likable characters, but the story is so
far-fetched with it's logic. It feels really forced in a lot of situations.”

8. Given
(508 Points) [Top: 8]
[Shift: --]

k3ls3yr1ann3 “Mafuyu is such a misunderstood cinnamon roll! Leaves me tearing up when he tries to reason through his grief.
The OSTs really bring some of these scenes together; it's very well placed and timed.
Definitely picking up the manga. Use of the CG is a bit more noticeable the more I watch.”

HaXXspetten “Quite slow-paced but also very believable. I like the characters in general, and although it still feels like
we've barely scratched the surface of what Given is actually about, we're at least starting to get into the meat of it.”

Akuma-chi “Oh, that's an interesting reveal. It's also really nice to learn more about the band and
general band/guitar related things as well as their shifting dynamic from Mafuyu's intro.
Not sure where they're going to go from the end of the last ep.”

9. Dr. Stone
(457.75 Points) [Top: 9]
[Shift: --]

Jokobo “Oh, the potential of this show was neglected sooo much. I'm starting to think of it like Tate no Yuusha:
good plot outline, but the characters are destroying it completely. ”

HaXXspetten “An uninspiring beginning to the show, but ep 7 has made me feel more positive about the show's future.
This might turn out more reminiscent of Slime's civ building than the scientific anime I had in mind, but still looking forward to it.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “I'll eat my words when it comes to my faith that it would stay in my top spot this season.
I still thoroughly enjoy this story, and thus far it's staying true to the source material. It just lacks that 'oomph' factor but,
it does have one of the better BGM tracks this season.”

Akuma-chi “Not only did I realise what Dr. Stone was about and forgave it for all the weakness I said it had...
but it has started going in a much better direction. Characters are still rather marmite though.”

BlueSkylark “Got better since the direction changed an episode ago. So, mainly judging what it has done previously:
cheap flashbacks, extreme power fantasy and overly serious for what it is. So far, plays out like every grade schoolers survival fantasy.”

10. Machikado Mazoku
(427 Points) [Top: 10]
[Shift: +5]

Jokobo “Thats strange, I don't even remember what happened in the latest episode... but I know that it was quite enjoyable.”

HaXXspetten “Feels kind of like a slightly more down-to-Earth version of Gabriel DropOut.
Not quite as good mind you but still a fun show all-round.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “Everything about this is just exceedingly cute.”

Akuma-chi “Oh god, this is too damn cute. I love the way they both improve each other in sometimes unexpected ways.
Shamiko is too cute! And their dynamic is as perfect as it gets xD”

BlueSkylark “In terms of pure enjoyment this would be my Number 1. Great comedy, with it's 4th wall breaking and parody of the Mahou Shoujo elements. Oh and Shamiko is precious.”

11. Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator
(399.5 Points) [Top: 10]
[Shift: -1]

Jokobo “A lot more linear than Index <3 At least I understand whats going on.”

HaXXspetten “Watching this right after Index III is part irony, part hilarity. The difference in enjoyment value is pretty staggering.
That said it's still not as good as Railgun at least but until the third season of that comes around, I'll take it.”

Akuma-chi “Well, I quite like a few of the characters in general but the story itself is taking its time to get into the real meat of it and
I just can't bite with only Last Order being cute and Accelerator being Accelerator carrying the show.”

12. Cop Craft
(388 Points) [Top: 11]
[Shift: -1]

Jokobo “A few episodes showing not story-related action, but these episodes still are good for highlighting characters.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “I feel like there's some kind of underlying plot at work. The episodic format isn't helping me put it together though.
Is it sad that I really want Tilarna and Kei to develop a romantic relationship by the end of this story, or am I fan-girling too much?”

Akuma-chi “It's interesting to see after the shift how the dynamic changes. I'm actually a bit impressed
that there was something during the first arc that explains how her character carries into the next one.”

BlueSkylark “I rather enjoy this show despite it not having a real red string, but the two mains
definitely have good chemistry which is the basis of a buddy cop show.”

13. Mix: Meisei Story
(386 Points) [Top: 13]
[Shift: +3]

k3ls3yr1ann3 “The fourth wall breaking every episode is beyond hilarious!”

Akuma-chi “Really cute how Sou compares the dynamic between Haruka and him to his and Tou-chan's.
Also there's been more focus on the side characters lately, while everything including breaking the 4th wall has to do with Otomi xD”

14. Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2
(343 Points) [Top: 12]
[Shift: -2]

Jokobo “Teasing is something which probably will never bore me. There is one thing that annoys me sometimes -
the fact that Takagi often knows something "because of plot".”

HaXXspetten “Takagi may be one of the most likable anime girls in recent years but, the repetitive nature of the show
with episodes you can't pace yourself makes them rather dull to watch. So I'm only watching for Takagi now.”

15. Joshikousei no Mudazukai
(325.75 Points) [Top: 15]
[Shift: +3]

Jokobo “Definitely not my humour type, seems like Asobi Asobase 2.0. The comedy is all what matters in this kind of show, but it is very unsatisfying for my taste.”

HaXXspetten “This is essentially Aho Girl with more screen time, more variety and even better comedy. Easily the best comedy
of the season and probably the most underrated Summer anime if you ask me.”

k3ls3yr1ann3 “This is hands down my favorite comedy of the season!”

Akuma-chi “Sometimes I'm not sure what I'm giggling about. Worst of all, Baka (at this point actual names are irrelevant,
but iirc her fam name starts with a Ta) is who I aspire to be... but let's not go there...”

BlueSkylark “Still the hilariously funny skit comedy that it was at the start of the season.
Still really dialogue heavy. Overall one of the best pure comedies this season.”

16. Carole & Tuesday
(304.25 Points) [Top: 12]
[Shift: -4]

Jokobo “I think that they don't know what to do with the story right now, cause last ~2-3 episodes
was about side characters which I'm not really fond of...”

HaXXspetten “Many of the episodes end up feeling unnecessary to the main narrative, and whenever it does there are still things that end up bothering you.
I hope they do something with the unexplored potential in the AI-aspect of the universe before the end.”

KANLen09 “I feel like this show is really playing up the dramatic edge lately.
It just isn't appealing to me as well as it was in the first half.”

Akuma-chi “I have nothing to say :akarishrug:”

17. Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e
(276.75 Points) [Top: 17]
[Shift: --]

Jokobo “Here we go again, he story has looped and started again,
strange approach for the 12-episode anime but okey.”

Akuma-chi “So the story took a bit of a turn in a different direction in the latest developments, somewhat away from the more episodic approach
and much character development has been had, in a few different ways.”

BlueSkylark “Plot finally starts to kick into full gear.
However I highly doubt it will reach a satisfying conclusion overall.”

18. Kochouki: Wakaki Nobunaga
(258.75 Points) [Top: 18]
[Shift: +5]

k3ls3yr1ann3 “There's something about shows from the historical genre I find appealing.
Add in engaging characters and well paced storytelling and I'm hooked.
This is also probably my 2nd favorite choice of color palette out of this round of seasonals next to Kimetsu.”

Akuma-chi “Vividly pleasing to watch. I liked the negotiations but execution of them could be more polished. Noticed that apart from how Oda developed,
certain threads of previous stories could be left behind, but overall still a fantastic show.”

BlueSkylark “Great historical drama. Although the life of Oda Nobunaga is probably the most overused in anime.
This iteration still stands out, with a great charismatic lead character and a great supporting cast.”

19. Granbelm
(228 Points) [Top: 19]
[Shift: +5]

k3ls3yr1ann3 “So at first this seemed like another generic magical girl anime,
but it's slowly starting to grow on me.”

Akuma-chi “It feels like the dark underbelly of this show is gradually making itself known. It's like going into a mafia game
like Town of Salem without realising you've gone into one until you suddenly stop and think about it.”

BlueSkylark “Why the hell has this show such a low score? 2nd favorite darker Mahou Shoujo show after Madoka.
Extremely good at keeping both suspense and tension up for the entire first half of it's runtime. Only gets better with later episodes.”

20. Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note
(221.5 Points) [Top: 20]
[Shift: +1]

Jokobo “Wow, a lot of new mythology/legend references like the Wild Hunt.
It is always nice to see some characters from other series of this franchise. And Rhongomyniad <3”

HaXXspetten “Episodic mystery anime are really hard to get into and don't tend to work well. There's a lot to cover per mystery for 20 minutes,
and by the end they reveal before you digested everything. The characters and the world is good though.”

BlueSkylark “Weird show. Gives of Agatha Christie vibes, especially with the start of it's current arc on the train.
Also it finally feels like the story is moving to it's important parts.”

OH THESE HAXX COMMENTS.
I wish I could do the same next time... or can I?
Nevertheless - I'm a bit worried that Kimetsu no Yaiba shifted up. Machikado Mazoku... okey, I can understand that, the first few episodes were very unclear, but Kimetsu no Yaiba is the same crappy show all over.
I'm so sad about Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san going down. But well, it is quite monothematic about the content, so I understand that some people can get bored with 2nd season.

Bro, do you know how many hours I spent cutting them down?! Next time I'll probably not bother cutting them down, they just won't be included in the main body, just the individual comments xD

I think I did a good job with my hack and slash job though :P

Man, I had a bunch of things to say about these results while I was making the post but then forgot ALL of them. Although with @k3ls3yr1ann3 comment about Astra... well, you'll see why... and I'm sure it'll be pretty soon that you see why this is the case (aka, only Aries' mum gives a flying fuck).

Yeah, pretty nice list. 7 of my top 10 shows are in the top 10, I'll take that.
Kimetsu no Yaiba shifting up after that great ep 19 is well deserved, and Fruits Basket and Vinland Saga still getting their love too :3
Interesting to see that Nobunaga show rising too, I'm kinda interested in watching it but I can barely keep up with the stuff I'm already watching xD

Yeah it only dissapeared in the listing. The points however were correct. Kuma was a bit in a hurry yesterday, so she might have messed up a bit there. Anyway I edited it in. ^^
