So I finally finished volume 4, now up to volume 5, story continues. Moguzos death hit the party pretty hard and it almost finished them, then they almost suicidaly finished themselves few times in their pursuit for new experiences, but they got new tank and everybody looks optimistically for near future. They even managed to join clan way out of their league, but they still has the potentional. I am just afraid who will raise death flag next, because it's looks like every Even volume they manage to do heroic deed, while every odd somebody dies. Next death will be heartbreaking whoever hit's it. I am scared for everyone last of them. Its about leaders and the leads and Haruhiro found his balls to lead now. I just miss Choco.

So another volume down. One step forward, two steps back it feels like that often happens for our gang. Moguzo's death hurts each of them differently, of course Haruhiro again continues to cloud his mind with many negative thoughts and carries all the blame, Merry drowns her sorrows and almost gets into some horrible trouble and Ranta borderline eats himself to death.

Kuzaku replaces Moguzo, and of course is the obvious green-horn now. I felt the rest of the group were quite harsh on him, and was surprised at the lack of mention and thought towards the fact that he loss his entire party. Where as everyone heard Mary's story previously and tried to befriend her. I guess they were just too busy trying to move forward and deal with the loss of Moguzo.

However in the end it's noticeable that Kuzaku is beginning to find his way, which is nice. I have to say after four volumes even I'm tired of Rantas trash talking. I honestly thought after the incident in the Cyrene mines that he and Haruhiro went through that the two of them would of discovered some new found respect for one another and begun to work together better. But as they say some people never change I guess.

This volume felt like it dragged a bit at first, but I suppose that was expected after the fast paced chaos that occurred last time around. That being said the Ustrel was super cool and creepy at the same time, and I thoroughly enjoyed the fight at the end. I was shocked when Ranta lost his arm, and was wondering what kind of trouble that would bring about. But after no other mention of it I'm assuming Marry's magic re-grew it? Lol

Overall I still enjoyed it and look forward to what's to come, but for me it wasn't as great as the previous ones.

Well I was excited after long time of not knowing what happened, so it wasn't so bad, it it's get a bit drag out, and volume 5 and especially volume 6 as well. Prepare for A LOT of Haruhiro's self-denial, self-conscious, self-pitting. And even character development and party interactions get drag down a lot for price of interaction with other characters/parties (which is somewhat good direction of world-building, because parties in Red moon reserve force are so important) and very unhappy direction of world-building (total waste of time in my opinion).

But don't worry, it's still has Grimgar feels with our favorite Grimgar characters. And volume 7 hits the best of Grimgar so far in my opinion.

@Martin_Taylor honestly I kind of hope the girls get to do more soon; so far Shihoru especially has just been lingering in battles and in the story overall. Yume who's like my favourite doesn't seem to get to shine much either and Merry just pops up to heal regularly. Over four volumes so far my only dislike would be that. Haruhiro and Ranta (and previously Moguzo) were always followed through the story when back at the town and at front of all battles and moments as well.

@Swizze Well... yeah... they don't. Really Minor spoiler alert, I guess? Volume 5 and 6 Will be about different girl, but it's kinda interesting. Volume 7 will get back to our character and volume 9 is whole from party perspective, there's where characters shines, Haruhiro is one being watched. Don't know how it goes then, but I am excited for volume 10.

She is but she's literally just a shadow to me. Like its a brick wall casting spells from a far lol. I don't dislike her I just wish they gave her more of the spot light at times. So far the novels have focused far too much on Haruhiro and Ranta arguining obsessively. Will jump into volume 5 soon. With 14 volumes out I know there's still plenty of time for characters to progress (if they don't die xD)

Again, another reason I like this series. A reflection chapter like this should be necessary for any serious life-and-death series. Without bleak introspection, I can't take a series where death is highly possible, seriously: it's like the characters themselves don't understand anything of their situation, even in the most basic way possible, and because of that I can never understand their choices. The characters will always be boring, their emotions and character development won't matter much, and they won't be relatable. Unless the characters are intentionally not sound of mind, a series will lack a lot without introspection scenes like this.

This series is meant to be emotionally driven and scenes like this have to be done well for this style of story. I'm glad they do these scenes well. I can see how this series would not do well as an anime, unless of course serious attention was given to it.
