Nym_ said:have you seen movie where both parties alive in the end?
No, but that doesn't mean that Jowy's 'oh no I've killed hundres but you still forgive me' moment is executed better or really had any emotional impact on me.
have you seen movie where vampires play a major role in a political power struggle between nations?
No, but I've played my fare share of D&D and I've played deeper story than this. Also the inclusion of vampire is really swallow and don't do any justice to the traditional figure of the vampire.
have you seen a movie where academics and soldiers join together to defend a city? i can continue if you want though.
Actually I've never seen a story where no strategic mind is able to successfully defend a city by brute force so I wonder if the inclusion of accademics is what made it so special.
my point is, there are so many motives and stories within Suikoden II. it's about friendship
But friendship is an overused topic and Suikoden doesn't do anything new with it.
love
Same as before.
betrayal
Same.
ninjas
What about them? They aren't even a topic, just a bunch of people who exist to make the political conflict more interesting.
dragons
Zzzzz.
magic
But magic is not even explored.
vampires
already talked about these ones.
politics
agree, Suikoden II's best part is the politics and how good the lore is.
human psyche
Meh, the characters are quite barebone ngl.
heroism
Heroism, Friendship, Love, Hate, Enemies... wait, is this a shonen anime?
wars
again, war is treated quite shallowly
harvesting, cooking, etc. which is no other games has ever invented in the game. most RPG games usually cover only one or two of these motives.
People usually praise quality over quantity. Suikoden II doesn't really do anything new with all these topics and it's just an amalgamation of already seen stuff. What it does best is lore tied to politics, but that's just a fragment of the game (maybe a bigger fragment of the story, but the characters are barely explored when it comes to political views).
If you want a game that does a lot of topics and explores them in new way then play xenogears. Let's see what they have: war, violence, psyche, god, morality, nobility, caste, love, cognition, mechas, history, world orded, incest, racism, family, purpose, life, friendship.
the good thing is, player can enjoy the stories even though there are many of them at their own pace, we're not forced to hunting for rare items or to finish a specific quest like other RPG games. it's purely about storytelling.
Same thing about Mother 3 and Xenogears. Actually gonna insert Xenosaga here as well since it's quite known to be a game mostly about the story. |
