I've been reading manga for quite some time now, and one problem never fails to stop me in my tracks; a problem that irritates me to no end. My reading pace is terrible, and it affects the rate at which I actually get through chapters dramatically. On a daily basis, I'm only able to get through one chapter of a series (usually 20 pages long) in about 20-30 minutes. That's nearly 2 minutes spent on every page--you should now be able to see the issue.

If I wanted to have a somewhat productive reading day, which I do, I'd literally need to spend far too many hours of my day dedicated to a manga I'll otherwise never get through. I've mentioned this issue to other people and I've been told it could be some sort of dyslexia, but I've never been diagnosed with such. After one chapter, I get so incredibly fatigued that I'm physically unable to do another.

What should I even do? It's not like I want to drop manga all together, but it might have to come to that if these problems don't disappear. I'm practically being forced to step away from my favourite titles.

Well no one is forcing you to step away.

I am a little interested to know if reading stuff on a screen is a problem for you or not, such as this message I am typing out. Simple text and stuff. Is reading a book a problem for you?

You should keep in mind that manga is generally jam-packed with visual information and if you are the type that pays attention to all mannerisms of details such as ink strokes, side characters, whatever is present in the picture, then that does indeed slow down the rate at which you read stuff. The way I see it, Anime is jam-packed with information too but it contains audio information which your ears can use to absorb information faster. With just pictures, you are stressing your eyes only.

Unless you have that stupid mindset of reading/watching as many titles you can so you can act 'knowledgeable' about tastes, I honestly don't see a problem in it as long as you are enjoying reading whatever little you can in 20-30 minutes / 2 mins per page. Personal enjoyment is supreme.

I read your message just fine. I haven't read a regular book or novel in a long time, the last being The Chamber of Secrets ..but as I recall, no problems were ever had.

As for reading online, the screen brightness tends to get to my eyes over long periods of time. I only read online for two reasons:

My house tends to be really dark, so reading physical copies is near impossible. I do still often buy them to show my support for the creator though.

The other reason is that buying all these volumes adds up and a hefty hole is left in your wallet.

The funny thing is, I have absolutely no trouble processing what goes on in an anime series, despite the fact I have to keep track of subtitles and the like.

Lol. Then I don't know what is the root cause xD

I was trying to guess whether it's a problem with attention span or if you need some audio stimuli to trick the brain into staying engaged. Have you tried listening to some music (preferably instrumental) while reading stuff online?

I've tried. It distracts me even more than normal.

I can't fathom why it would take you so long to read one weekly-length chapter.
My friend with dyslexia spends about twice the amount of time than I do to read a volume. So like 90 minutes, which would maybe be about 9-16 min per chapter for him.

Does the shading and and art just blur together and you lose focus or something? I've had that but only with the Ultra Heaven manga (cuz it was trippy af).

I don't know what the problem is. I've decided to try out some reading glasses sometime soon, just to see if that helps any.

I kinda have the "same" problem i spend quite a lot of time but it isnt a reading problem or anything like that i just really feel the need to understand everything on the picture im seeing, like the expressions the side characters are making on the background and the way this person treats another person diferently and stuff like that.
But what i do when i have trouble reading a manga i just dont read it and leave it to the morning, im a guy who wakes up pretty early and i usually spend the entire morning reading manga since i just woke up and my mind is clearer.

Reading weekly updates is easiest for me, I can read with a minimum of 2 min per chapter but I'm slow when it comes to reading a completed manga. It took me 3 months to complete Vagabond.

I can just about do that before the eye-strain and exhaustion begins kicking in.

Ehm... is there some problem with the town's electricity supply?

No. It's just very dark and shadowy. The light-bulbs we buy hardly do their job, and all the couches face away from the windows.

Don't force yourself to do more than you're able to.

I say your reading pace is fine as long as you're still having fun. There's no rush and putting this pressure on yourself feels like more of a burden than it has to be. When I was younger I could blow through an entire book in like a day, but now I get tired after 1 or 2 chapters. Do you feel it's more of a distraction problem over visual? Maybe the size of your screen has some kind of influence, too. (computer vs phone/tablet)

I don't know if you already use this, but there's this program called flux that puts a warm filter on your screen to lessen eye strain. It won't take the tiredness feeling away completely, but it definitely helps. There's other apps like that as well for phones, if that's where you read.

Honestly? Iit feels like both. The more I feel tired, the more I want to go do something else that'll wake my brain up. There's no winning.

Wouldn't such a filter make reading kind of difficult? Is the program itself any good? Is it safe?

That's not a slow pace - that's normal. Anybody else who reads faster than that is obviously not reading/focusing on the dialogues. Or they're reading too much of shounen manga. You shouldn't let your reading time come in your way of enjoying manga. I know I didn't - just look at my manga stats.

Even with dyslexia, it's possible to train your reading speed and improve.
For me, I love to read regular books as well as manga and I believe if you try to read a couple of books and other long texts you will easier fall into a kind of flow.
I've trained my reading pace a lot this past couple of years and I'm doing really good even with dyslexia. Also, manga has great pictures you want to admire, nothing wrong with that.
You could also see it as being able to spend more time doing something you love, keep training I think it will be worth it.

I can't speak for everyone, but it definitely helps me. It makes reading easier since I don't get tired as fast as I do without it. It doesn't affect the brightness of your screen, just the hue. I have mine set to changing with the time of day all on its own, but you can still raise or lower or even disable the program whenever you want. I've been using it for years now, probably since around 2013?, with no problems. It might take a little getting used to seeing a yellowy/orange screen vs a blue-white one at first, but you'll eventually get used to it. Of course, you're welcome to do research on your own to see what other people have to say about it.

Do you spend much time seeing the details of the images on the manga? Or maybe the manga you're reading has a lot of details or text and it makes things harder for you. You reading TG and so am I (will ever finish it? fuck I do no want to but only time will tell) and sometimes I spend a big amount of time on it because the drawing isn't that good and I have to try to figure out what is happening on the page and also because has a lot of text full of information which most of the time is useless and hella boring.
I . A M . D E A D !  C O N T I N U E ?

I unintentionally space out more times than I'd like to admit.

Tokyo Ghoul's art, while it can be pretty intense when it needs to be, is mostly jarring on the eyes. I too need to take a few lengthy moments to actually figure out what I'm even looking at. Same with the JoJo manga to a lesser extent.
