I often see the phrase "yuri bait" and other "(insert type here) bait." So is it just anime blueballing you, or more complicated?

Using X to entice/lure Y, and not follow through. It's not more complicated.

does one really need canonic yuri or is scenes like this enough..

it makes more sense in the phrase "fujo bait" as in scenes/characters/such meant to bait fujoshi to watch your show without being overtly so and alienating other audiences
at least that's how i'd use this term

Something that makes you look at something due to intrigue, or "bait" by urban dictionary meaning is to have alot of people want you for your choosing.

A bad opinion that gets spouted just to lure in some angry fanboys.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

But is it bait if I take it off the hook knowing it is and eat it cause I want it anyways? I'm a crafty fish.

Pretty much this.

Or I see it used in reviews a lot, in ways that are simply stating it can appeal to an audience in a certain way and then trying to apply as much in a diminishing or negative way, for...some reason. Usually just a dislike of something they think the series is trying to accomplish on said fundamental level, except just trying to be put on a level much more objective than it really can be in this case and often trying to turn the knife onto the audience for their issues with this concept. Something I probably would still find stupid if it was explained to me, honestly, since I really don't really think it's a line of thought that has a lot of potential to stem outwards into something actually interesting or thoughtful.

Seriously, I'd go as far as to say I've seen "(X) bait" used unironically in mediocre-yet-still-actually-trying reviews on this site more than I have seen people on AD or in reviews alike use it as a way of shitposting.

Bait is promising elements to entice an audience that isn't addressed in further detail. In conventional storytelling, the first chapter or arc is representative of what will follow.
An example of plot bait is the introduction of an interesting premise or setting, luring in viewers and then never exploring it.
This kind of bait is very common in fantasy, science-fiction and isekai.

When a show keeps hinting at for example a possible Yuri relationship without actually following through on that, just so they can increase their audience by appealing to the Yuri fanbase.

Sengoku Basara baited me into thinking that it would be an action packed fun show based on it's first episode.

However it was a boring slog with barely any battles, unlikable characters, and zero plot. I went in expecting mindless action, which is very little to expect to begin with, and it couldn't even deliver on that passed episode 1.

Sengoku Basara is absolute garbage. Honestly whenever anyone mentions "bait and switch" tactics in general, Sengoku Basara is the first thing that comes to mind.

When the word ____ 'bait' is used, it implies that the character being referenced was added and its designed specifically to appeal to people who like that kind of character (moe, loli, shota, yuri, fujo). Its usually only applies if that character isn't usually the type of character to appear in that show's particular genre.

bait noun
/beɪt/
bait noun (FISH/ANIMAL)

[ U ] a small amount of food on a hook (= curved piece of wire) or in a special device used to attract and catch a fish or animal

basically it means that a show lures you in with a particular thing but then it gets really shitty, sometimes you're in too deep and can't leave
example:
H2O: footprints in the sand

Isn't it when a series rip you off and leads you to think it contains some sort of Yuri or Yaoi content but in fact it doesn't have any and just gives you hints that something is happening soon but never happens?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

An example could be, putting two girls in the cover of a series and make them hugging each other a lot but never kissing or having any type of progress as a relationship, just hugs.
