It signifies sexual excitement to the viewer. Kinda like how..... actually, nevermind. (Mainly used for comedic effect)

One common trait amongst the Japanese population is high blood pressure. As a result the idea was spread to have somebody with a nosebleed in a time when they were say blushing (since its literally blood suddenly rushing to the face) to show arousal.
Anime in turn very much uses exaggeration hence why it's over emphasized as a common trait amongst characters to a comedic effect.

Getting aroused causes blood to shoot up to your head. Like most another things, anime takes this to the extreme with the nosebleed trope.

It's a representation for erections without showing erections. It can also be a way of getting around the censors, though most of them have caught on by now (the edited version of Tenchi Muyo had nosebleeds, but the edited version of Naruto didn't).

A nosebleed from sexual stimulation is a real thing... It also happens with stress, fear, anger etc... When the body is stimulated too much at one time, bleeding from nose and ears is possible...
It is seen a lot in athletes that push too hard...

Anime just decided to take that concept and make it into a running gag...

As someone who has never had a nose bleed from any form of excitement, I never understood it and it completely ruins immersion for the scene when it happens, imo.

Not trying to make this forum about myself, but I can actually get nosebleeds when I get excited. Because I have blood pressure problems. Though, it's not like I instantly get a nosebleed, it's a delayed reaction. It's a neurological issue.

I imagine noses were prime candidates as location of outward bleeding since it's an open orifice. Thus characters wouldn't need to recover from open wounds. There are other orifices such as anus or genitals; but those are concealed and wouldn't produce such an splashy effect. The ears are used, though ear bleeds are much rarer than nosebleeds. Mouth bleeds are somewhat common.

On a side note, one of my favorite nosebleeds is a scene in Patlabor; where Ohta has a nosebleed over a gatling gun.

I believe it's a metaphor for having a boner. How else you can perceive something sexual in a manner which is also comedic.

If you know the concept of fiction, which sort of exaggerating everything, Nosebleed is just one of them. The only difference with other exaggeration is the scale of it. It is used to add an extra effect of drama, comedy to a situation or even for the purpose of propaganda.

Anime characters have blood under high pressure in their bodies. A cut causes it to spill all over, while serious dismemberment can produce more blood than could possibly fit in a human body. Maybe that's what allows exceptional feats of athleticism.
Sexual excitement causes blood pressure to raise even higher, resulting in weak capillaries of the nose breaking. Normally, that blood pressure is supposed to go to the penis (to make it hard and impossibly big), but outside of hentai, anime characters suffer from barbie doll anatomy and don't actually have penises to enlarge.
Also, ears have safety release valves, allowing blood to exit as steam without causing damage, but they do not operate reliably.

Anime characters nosebleed when they are sexually aroused or overexcited.

It's just an exaggeration
