Great episode, but unlike a lot of Shingeki's action-based episodes its thrill (at least for me) came not from is spectacle but its character showcase. So much good character work here: Ymir coming to terms with her own selfishness, Historia's dedication to her despite that, Erwin's frankly insane approach to battle, Mikasa's hardened heart and terrifyingly single-minded devotion to Eren, and Armin's uncharacteristic act of deceit in the name of strategy (which is a very interesting place to take his character, which up until now had already been interesting by virtue of the juxtaposition of his unerring rationalism and unabashed emotionalism.) And then you had Bertholdt, who's quickly become the most interesting of the Titan shifters to me (including Eren), if only because he comes across as a genuinely timid boy forced into a situation he hates but in which he feels trapped (which raises intriguing questions about this show's biggest draw, the massive Titan-centered conspiracy at its heart): his need to undercut his betrayal by frantically assuring his former friends that their friendship had been a legitimate one, his desperate plea to be saved from his own actions despite his own inability to turn back from the path he's taken, his deep loyalty to his Titan comrades (in this case Annie).

Throw all this rich character stuff into the steaming cauldron of a 20-minute episode and in the context of a typically bombastic action sequence and booming OST, and you have a winner. Yeah, all this is utterly devoid of subtlety, and some of it we've seen before (like Mikasa's obsessive devotion to Eren), but in this case, because it was so well integrated and in fact arose organically from the intense action taking place, Shingeki's heavy-handed approach to character writing worked. Sparks were flying, and not all of them from Reiner's thrown Titans.

FANTASTIC & ABSOLUTLY INSANE EPISODE.
Enjoyed Historia & Ymir's talk. DAMN Mikasa's death stare is scary as hell & the best.
Sad seeing Jean, Sasha & Connie try to reason with Bertholdt.
Erwin is the absolute madman. Leading titans to Reiner, getting dragged by a titan, but still telling everyone to advance & slashing Bertholdt with one arm. This man is the greatest & he delivers such great speeches.

LOL that horse so chill after that guy got eaten.
Armin really knows how to piss off Bertholdt. That smile was creepy.

Eren free & Mikasa is hurt. Oh snap face to face with the Titan that ate their Mum.
Can't believe we have one more ep to go. They need to announce a 3rd season.

Yeah, these scenes are great looking, but there was a bunch of other scenes which looked pretty terrible imo, with either still shots (am I watching a colored manga slideshow?) or characters looking off-model. While this has always been the case with Attack on Titan, this episode especially made the difference between the parts that were really worked on and the bad ones really contrasting.

No. Erwin just cut across his chest enough to have the ropes that are holding Eren get destroyed.

On topic, amazing episode indeed. Can't believe this will end next week. Even if it was only 12 episodes, episode 6 and this one were alone worth the wait all these years for a new season, and pretty sure the ending will be as good as these two.

That titan at the end who killed Eren's mom is Isayama himself, they even have the same haircut. Pretty sure he based him on himself lol jk.

Wow, no wonder Ewen is the Commander. His determination was impressive even having an arm eaten off.

Eren will probably go into crazy-mode seeing the titan that ate his mother. Can't believe the nest episode will be the last! This anime needs more seasons.

berdthodlt and reiner are dumb b****rds; really give a proper reason you good or you bad; the got some weird sense of justice so i'd really wanna read the manga to understand them asap
mikasa is scarier than any titan
i dont get why she didnt just stick her blade in so eren could transform or even to take off berthodlts neck

You should give it a read especially the latest chapter. Reiner and Berthold are a lot more complex as characters.

Best thing about this story is that good and bad are pretty blurry and it's a lot more grey than anything else.

"am I watching a colored manga slideshow?" - slideshow are in every anime if there are many characters in one scene. For animators this kind of scenes are nearly impossible to animate so you shouldnt complain. Episode has amazing animation, scene with horses attacking people was fantastic made.

This episode was very intense. Mikasa was terrifying when she was trying to save Eren. Lots of mind games going on. Erwin was awesome. Even when he was inside a titan's mouth, he's still giving orders. Armin provoking the duo was great. One more episode to go.

There was way too many of them in this episode though. Previous episodes had no issues showing bunch of people advancing on horses and what not, even if with some CGI. This one just put in one still shot after another whenever there was a group shot.

I really enjoy how bertholdt and Reiner look so pathetic and cowardly. For all their might and all they've done, they're still just little kids fighting a war they barely understand and have no saying on. They just want to fulfill their duties so they can go home. They just want to stay alive in a hostile and unknown enviroment.

Also finding out that the 'enemy' is as human as you, has the same kind and cruel atributes as yourself must be very hard to deal with, on both sides.

That's very human, and that makes these characters very compelling.

I really feel this series is starting to get more philosophical, tackling big questions like 'why do we fight?' 'who's the real enemy?' and 'am i doing the right thing? am i a good person?' kind of existensial stuff

LMAO that horse really doesn't give a f*ck! xD

LOL well all of their horses seem to be trained to be calm in stressful situations hahahaha.

Erwin is an amazing leader, better than him only Levi.
Armin is so damn intelligent, he is so precious;3
And the winner of best facial expressions and badassary in this ep goes to MIKASA! She turns into a terminator when it comes to Eren. I wish I could see her like this regarding Armin, because he is also supposed to be her best friend...but I never really saw her going berserk for him.
I think Ymir is annoying. I like that she loves Historia but she is forcing her to choose between their friends and her, I don´t like that.

Armin MVP. Erwin is a little crazy, that wasn't much of a plan (rip nameless soldiers) but it was effective, at least.

Smiling titan is back, pretty sure Eren is going to go titan-mode and administer a beatdown next ep.

Not sure what's going to happen with Reiner and Bert next ep; either the pacing is going to have to pick up dramatically or there might be an unsatisfying cliffhanger, with only the one episode left. We'll have to wait and see.
