I really wasn't into anime all that much, until I saw this film. To this day I still can't explain why I went to go see it since I've never seen a Japanese Anime in cinema's before. I can't even explain why it made me feel this way in any logical sense, all I know is what it made me feel. It was fucking amazing. This film got me into anime and since then I haven't seen anything like it still yet I keep an open mind to all anime I watch.
I really want to know from you guys what this anime means to you, and your feelings on it

To me, this anime means: patience... I am still waiting to see it as I wait for the DVD release... Is hard to wait, because I confronted with this hype train since last summer, and I am dying little by little each time I remember of it.

I just saw it tonight. It was the next to the last showing in my city and I did not even know it was playing here until this past Tuesday.
I left work, stopped home to eat, and then headed off to the theater. When I arrived I was briefly shocked. "Your Name" did not appear on the marquee! I was worried I had missed the last showing, but instead of going back home I checked the self-service ticket machine and there it was.

I can truly say Kimi no na wa is a near-masterpiece. The animation alone was worth the 13 bucks I paid. The story was very moving and it did not seem long at all. I think there were only 8 other people in the audience tonight, though I suspect the fact that the theater did not advertise it may have had an effect on attendance.

After the credits rolled and I was making my way home through the dark city streets, it began to lightly rain. It somehow matched the mood I was in.

I just saw the movie tonight as well! Had to drive to another state to see it as the other theaters near me didn't have times I could make it to. It was the first time I'd ever seen something with subtitles at a movie theater and something about that was exciting. They had a poster right inside the entrance which was surprising, since I expected it to be one of those things no one knows is even playing.

And there were maybe 15 other people seeing it! I thought it'd be dead. But there was a loud weeb who bawled her eyes out toward the end. Just straight up sobbing with no regard to the other moviegoers. Her friend shushed her twice and she just plowed right along smh. People like that need to just stay at home and let the rest of us enjoy movies in peace.

It was beautiful. I almost watched a crappy 480p version I found online but I'm glad I waited.

I found it pretty boring tbh, far from the best anime film I've seen and far from a masterpiece. I like the ideas it presented, the art and animation was wonderful, I just found the characters and overall execution to be weak. It's still a good film nonetheless, just not the best.

It isn't that great though. Just an average romance movie.

It goes without saying that the art and music are incredible. The plot is pretty simple. The characters are likeable, but not amazing, though they develop really nicely.

In my opinion, what makes this movie stand out is the incredible amount of symbolism. Everything means something, and there are many different ways to interpret it all. Makes for fun discussions. There is a lot going on behind the scenes. Most of the people calling the film an average romance movie are just too narrow minded to look beneath the surface.

There are also a lot of tiny details that are very easy to miss. They add to the overall experience if you catch them, but don't detract anything if you miss them. It is fun to rewatch and try to look for things you missed the first time.

Personally, until I watched it in the big screen I had little understanding of why Kimi no na wa was so popular or well-received, but upon reconsideration, I think it was a masterpiece.

What makes the movie great is that it really extracts everything great about the medium:

1) Incredibly descriptive scenery and fantasy-like backdrops, loosely based on the real world. At the right time the art can give off an incredible amount of feeling and emotion.
2) Well timed music and great soundtrack.
3) A story that is extremely easily relatable to and enjoyable. While the fantasy aspect is not relatable, the idea of feeling that your missing something and finding it is something we can all relate to allowing for sympathy for characters, this kind of fantastical realism draws in a lot of emotion.

Overall, at first glance, the story is simple, bland, and frankly unimpressive. A synopsis doesn't do it justice and without being immersed in the movie you simply won't enjoy it. However, if you find the story relatable, the music beautiful, and art breathtaking as I did, I guarantee that you'll come to find the movie quite beautiful in spite of some flaws.

I watched the movie for the 4th time and it still gives me the chills, oh boy... A masterpiece!

After having it watched several times now and having had discussion with friends and people from the internet, I agree that there are some plot holes. (Although I am a believer of the dream theory: It is pointed out in the movie that the experience is dream like for Taki and as in dreams, you don't remember all information.)

But you know, I don't think that the characters or the "logical" order of the story was in the focus. If you know also Shinkai style, you know he tries to hit the feelings, and with this story, the animation and the music, he succeeded in extremly good. Like as in other animes too. Therefore, he is a great storywriter. You could discuss also about his characters of 5cm/s or the Garden of Words, and still could find arguments about why those characters aren't drawn subtle enough. But the feels boy... And that is for me the reasons why people love this anime so much.

I mean, THIS moment:

That was my favourite scene and the best moment of drama-comedy EVER. It left me speechless.

So, I just saw this gem yesterday, and after seeing it, i have no darn idea why it took me so much to do it....

The beauty of the scenery, the super revealing opening, the atmosphere....all of them are superb.
For me, this movie made me wish to be able to turn back time and once again see a certain person i all of the glory of our past relationship, even tho a friend warned me i would miss her and that i should keep my phone away.

In short, if you are fond of the pure romance, the type of ones without any games in it, but are also familiar with the feeling of distance and struggles needed to overcome to make a relationship work....this will push all of the right buttons.

Really, I do not see what is there not to like, unless you are not into romance anime, in which case why are you even watching it?

I'm by no means a film critic and I certainly don't have a conscious understanding of good cinematography and all the things that go along with it. I'm also pretty easy to entertain.

That being said, I do know that if I become emotionally "attached" to a story or characters, I'm more likely to overlook its flaws (or rationalize them). A prime example is "Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day". This show, objectively, suffers from occasional bad writing and a few periods where I think, "Why didn't they do <this>? It would have saved a lot of grief." Yet in the end, I was emotionally invested and sharing the characters' happiness and sadness. That damn director trained me to cry whenever I heard particular songs and it still works!

Kimi no Na wa is the same for me. I absolutely adored both of the characters by the midpoint of the film and, as they struggled through the second half, I was rooting for them. There were moments when I got chills because it made me think of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, which I'm sure was intended, and that brought an even deeper level of emotion for me.

I've watched other Shinkai-san's films before and he's always been able to evoke deep, sentimental, feelings as I watch them. I'm reminded of the Japanese word "Natsukashii", which is a nostalgic longing for the past, with happiness for the fond memory, yet sadness that it is no longer"

When I first saw Kimi no Na wa on opening night in the US, I was stunned - almost as if I couldn't move - when the credits rolled. I also remembered that only one couple got up - everyone else was stayed in their seats until at least half of the credits went by.

I won't claim that it's "perfect". I read that Sinkai-san said that they had run out of money and it wasn't quite what he wanted. I've read criticisms of the film and I can acknowledge (some of) them, though in others I've rationalized them, too. But the feels I got from this film was absolutely something special for me.

This movie honestly touched me. I've watched almost a hundred anime series but none have ever made me feel like Kimi No Na Wa. I'm a 16 year old boy that was touched by the beauty of this film. It was powerful and I've watched it 3 times already but can't get over these feelings I'm getting from this film. I feel so attached to this movie and characters. I've never watched anything that matched it. It was beautiful completely throughout, the story, the animation, the great music. It honestly makes feel sad because I want more of this amazing film. I'd love to share it with other people but it seems like people around me won't even give anime a chance.

Everything you said i heavily disagree with. The soundtrack was typical. The back ground animation was great, but the characters were flat and generic. The story has interesting ideas but so much of it is rushed through and never properly explored. So much of the situation with them dealing with switching bodies is montaged through. I dont even feel like i got to know the characters, but maybe thats because theyre both so bland.

i completely agree with this. i was deeply impacted by this movie. as others have said, i can't exactly articulate why, something in the story just really resonated with me, and visually it is so stunning. but the soundtrack really ties the whole thing together for me. the score and the songs.

but overall, this movie is what turned me onto anime and i still have not found anything in the genre i love as much as this film.

Despite its plot holes and seemingly impossible situation (but what's anime without it) it was a very touching story that many could relate to. It hit such a wide audience and on top of that being beautifully animated really sent it to the top. But the story itself was presented in a way where just when we figured something out, we were given yet another big thing shoved in our faces, and we ate it up good. This covered up any long thinkings about the plot holes, getting us so invested into the story that we just don't care about the inaccuracies anymore. In my opinion, that is the sign of a "great" anime. The ability to cover up your inaccuracies and yet to branch off in such a way where it made it better is one that few animes can claim. But this here, is why it is so highly acclaimed. Even after watching the film 6 times over I still do not care about the plot holes.

Why Kimi no na wa is so great

Because people are easily pleased?
Just show them some pretty colors, advertise to the max and you got a deeply moving chef-d'œuvre of the world cinema.

Bonus those "I never watched anime but this is great" guys.
Duuuh, if you were interested you would know better directors/authors then Shinkai like Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Oshii, Katsuhiro Otomo, Mamoru Hosoda, Hiroyuki Yamaga, Takeshi Koike ect.

Would like you to know since posting this, ive seen atleast 1 anime from each of those directors, surprised you didn't put Miyazaki or Naoko Yamada on that list

@Kingsman117
ive seen atleast 1 anime from each of those directors

And still preferring Shinkai?

Miyazaki or Naoko Yamada

I don't like Miyazaki that much...I mean he has some great stuff before founding studio Ghibli and afterthat he only repeats himself.
The only projects that I like from Ghibli are directed by Isao Takahata (well except Omoide Poroporo).

Naoko Yamada - I like some of her animation work on Nichijou, K-On and Suzumiya Haruhi but this don't make her equal to those guys I mentioned earlier. Aaand I don't like Koe no Katachi.
My favorite female anime director is Rie Matsumoto by the way.

Also I said "ect", Miyazaki and Yamada are way better directors than Shinkai and there are many more.

Better directors in what way? Also ive seen all of Shinkai's films, don't like all of them.

Also I can still love all the directors you mentioned equally to Yamada, they are all different, I don't necessarily think one Is better than the other. I also don't hold it against you that you prefer some directors over others especially if you dislike their work, and yes I would agree with you on Miyazaki but he tends to make a habit of me being angry with his anime yet also give a shit. Like I loved Princess Mononoke and hated it's entire second half.

Can't say ive seen any of Rie Matsumoto stuff, sorry.

Better directors in what way?

In the way they have chosen to represent the script to the viewer. What they asked from storyboard artists, background artists, character designers, animators, editors, voice actors, sound designers and composers.
Their result is always a deep comprehensible story but Shinkai always ends with a mess.
In his movies he has great shot and scenes - this is way I respect his photographic and artistic sense but not his scriptwriter's and director's abilities.

I don't necessarily think one Is better than the other.

I don't make comparisons between them too, just demonstrating what I mean under "better than Shinkai". Also this is not a complete list, just a few names from the top of my head.

Can't say ive seen any of Rie Matsumoto stuff

For example the first season of Blood Blockade Battlefront. You can find it on CR.
On first glance looks like regular battle shounen but it's highly experimental.

Once I also liked Sayo Yamamoto but lately she is making subpar fanservice stuff like Yuri on Ice.

I think it’s a great way to get people into anime. Dazzling visuals of course but also a simple but touching story they can get behind. After watching a lot of anime (the good ones ok) you can kind of see this movie as a mere husk of a shell, not having any real weight or substance to it. It still is a very pretty shell though.

To me the best movie I've ever seen. Watched it thrice and it never gets boring. Can't even explain why i got so many goosebumps, can't say which part of the movie hit me hardest. But still, by far the best thing happened to me. Animation, soundtrack, story ; everything's just masterpiece. Those who trynna look cool by saying it average may f themselves.
