Hi! I'm having trouble finding animes that I would like to watch (most Google searches are just turning up titles I've already decided to pass on). I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Here's my anime list. Note that my scoring system is a little odd:

    * I use a one- through five-star rating system, where 1 star ("5" in MAL) is a show I quite enjoyed and expect to re-watch, and 5 stars ("10" in MAL) is my favorite anime of all time.
    * No stars ("4" in MAL) can range from "hated it" to "ok but no need to rewatch".

What I'm looking for are animes with the following attributes:

    * Exploration/discovery/conflict/intrigue/action, preferably in a fantasy environment (I quite like the popular sent-to-a-parallel-world setup), for example:

    * A balance in tone between serious and lighthearted, for example:

      * (see above list, with the possible exception of Dragon Ball)

    * A romantic couple (married or similarly committed) with equal, shared status as the protagonists, exploring/fighting/solving the problems they encounter together, for example:

      * Last few episodes of Eureka Seven...
      * ...??? I've been having trouble finding these; maybe I just am not Googling for them well.

    * Long-running/epic, completed, with a finished story with a happy, fulfilling ending (at least for the protagonists)

The following are bonus attributes that will notch up my interest in a series:

    * Tournament/competition/survival-test/training arcs (e.g. Dragon Ball; Hunter x Hunter (2011))
    * Feminist/inclusive themes
    * Gorgeous art (e.g. The Wolf Children; Another)
    * Genderless characters
    * Specifically non-sexual romance (emotional and cuddling aspects only)
    * Electronic dance music soundtracks (e.g. Eureka Seven[/i]'s house music, or JoJo's Bizarre Adventures's and Katanagatari's dubstep)

I don't mind and am perfectly ok with the following traits:

    * Overpowered protagonists
    * LGBTQ+/nonbinary characters
    * Guts and gore
    * Old/retro/sloppy art

I usually dislike shows featuring the following:

    * Slice of life
    * Shows primarily about dramatizing sports, card games, music, cooking, other hobbies, etc.
    * Plots that are only monster/mystery/whatever-of-the-week

I strongly dislike shows featuring the following:

    * Harem/love triangles
    * Romance that beats around the bush
    * Being random because it's supposed to be "funny" (I'm looking at you, Sakigake!! Cromartie Kokou
    * Ecchi/sexual fanservice
    * Non-equal romantic relationships (e.g. relationships where one person is always rescuing the other and the other seems to be there just to be rescued, seme/uke–type relationships, etc.)

I would be very grateful for any help you can give me in finding animes meeting these criteria! Thank you in advance!

...ummm... I've already got them on my list (linked above) as "dropped", with fairly low ratings... not sure if joking, but thanks anyway?

How about Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood?

You could try Akagami no Shirayuki-hime, it's really enjoyable watching a sweet couple where the heroine isn't helpless, dumb damsel in distress.

Hmmm, also maybe Shinsekai yori. Kind of suits what you're looking for, I think.

If you dropped the happy ending attribute, I'd know one or two more.

Snow White with Red Hair (akagami no shirayuki hime)
-Romance is great, no harem.-the couple explores things and protect each other
-MC is not OP but reliable, definitely not dense

Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (i guess?)
-Romance is good, abit ecchi, no harem

Steins Gate
-Romance is good, no harem (as i remember)
-MC is reliable and great, a mad scientist
-Suspense+Comedy is balance

Ooh, this looks terrific. Thanks! :D

I'll check out Shinsekai Yori and Steins;Gate — I had assumed they were more of psychological horror/thriller than adventure/romance (because of the tags on the former and the cover art of the latter), but I suppose I shouldn't make assumptions. :3

I'd be glad to hear what your thoughts are for ones without happy endings too, just out of curiosity.

I'll probably watch this one, but I suspect it'll end up getting a "meh" score from me due to the ecchi element (unless it's played up for laughs as a parody). Thanks!

Just a random thought: I quite liked the romance in Nazo no Kanojo X (it lost points on the ecchi aspect that turned up in a couple episodes). (It's not the kind of show I'm seeking at the moment in this thread, but just impulsively felt like sharing that I thought it did romance well)

Thanks again for all your thoughts and help!

You'll probably give this one a pass but: Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo.

What you wanted/are fine with:
Exploration/Discovery/Conflict
Parallel World
Has funny and serious moments
Has romance between two characters who work together
Completed with a good ending
Feminist Themes
It doesn't have a dance soundtrack, but the soundtrack is still pretty good.
LGBT characters
Has some gore.

What you didn't want:
Randomness
Sexual Fanservice

From a review:
RLinksoul said:
A show where its all female cast is literally treated as objects, forced into skimpy outfits, repeatedly demeaned and violated, while constantly spouting words like "skank" and "whore". It's crass, it's tasteless and as much as I don't like to use the word, it honestly comes off as sexist.

I'm getting mixed messages here... -_-;

And you had to read the reviews...I guess you can give it a pass then...

I would explain it, but that would be spoiling one the major plot points in the series...

I'll probably give it a try, but I'm not sure I'll make it far enough in to get to a plot twist... Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!

Heh, there's a plot twist in the very first episode, haha!

But since you seem to be someone who prefers more serious anime, I'll expect you to drop it at around...episode 3. Oh well... Enjoy it while it lasts!

I did make it through all 153 episodes of Dragon Ball and enjoy that (hint: skip the last two episodes; 151 is a much better finale — the last two basically feel like bad OVAs) — I certainly am not totally opposed to funny :3

Kyoukai no Kanata maybe?
I might be biased because I absolutely love Kuriyama Mirai, but from what you've asked

action, preferably in a fantasy environment (I quite like the popular sent-to-a-parallel-world setup) - It has decent amount of action. It's not in a parallel world but it does have demons and stuff, so I guess it counts?

A balance in tone between serious and lighthearted - Checked

A romantic couple (married or similarly committed) with equal, shared status as the protagonists, exploring/fighting/solving the problems they encounter together - The latter is definitely there. About the romantic couple, the attachment develops very early in the anime but they get together much later so if you don't mind that, this point is checked too

Long-running/epic, completed, with a finished story with a happy, fulfilling ending - I don't think it can be considered long running (12 episodes + a special + a movie) but finished story with happy ending

From the bonus attributes, non sexual Romance but as they get together late there won't be much holding hands and stuffs either
And the art really good too imo

It doesn't have anything you've put in your dislike/strongly dislike list.
Except maybe slice of life? That's the lighthearted part of the series

I hope this helps. :)

Not at all, except for the bad start assuming you already know what happens in the beginning. People just like to throw it into recomendations, and since it ends with couples photographies it is enough to link it to your needs. ^^"

I would have liked to say Tenkû no Escaflowne, but you already have it. (usually, people asking for this aren't even aware of its existence) And since you specifically ask for a antasy adventure, I can't put Hiatari ryôkô! here. Not like it's important, since 95% of everything we could propose will probably be just "decent" enough to get the 1 star treatment. xD (unless I didn't get the notations, and this is in fact a binary system)

To me there's a difference between feminist themes and trashing talking gun toting "badass" women who are basically male empowerment fantasy characters, except women.

And unfortunately this show doesn't tackle LGBT anything with grace and subtlety. It's all gratuitous fanservice.

If you're looking for a show with feminist themes, like, ones to actually take seriously, the characters would never be dressed like this.

Shows actually targeted toward female audiences would be more appropriate, like Utena or Princess Tutu.

The former deals with sexuality themes, and can get a little uncomfortable, but it's more because it's supposed to be that way. It doesn't show you women being violated and try to tell you it's fanservice, instead treating it as just as unpleasant as it should be. I haven't seen it so I can't really speak much on the story, but I'm sure you can find someone to give you a better idea of what it's like.

The latter is a considerably more toned down in those themes, and is more about romance than sexuality. Its major themes are ballet, classical music and German fairy tales. It starts out as being kind of a --- of the week show, before becoming more plot focused after a few episodes. It's often compared to Madoka Magica, but offers much more of a balance between light and dark themes, whereas Madoka plummets into darkness and stays there.

I'm most of the way through watching this one, and it's well on its way to being one of my all-time favorite series. Thanks. <3

Looks intriguing — I'll give it a try, thanks! I'm made a little skeptical of the mentions of the terms "sister complex" and "fan service" in Stark700's review (and the cover looks like it might be a bit on the "moe" end of the spectrum), but I'll probably give it a go anyhow — sounds like it certainly has potential. :)

Wait, people don't know Escaflowne, really?! It's awesome, I'd think it would be totally famous :P (granted I'm kind of biased since it's one of my favorites)

A 1-star (rated 5) anime is more than decent — that means it's at least good enough for me to consider it worthy of multiple re-watchings, and I kind of have to love them to want to re-watch them...

Yeah, I think I might pass on that one then. Thanks for the warning.

I started watching Utena before but wound up dropping it for some reason (IIRC, I was just kind of confused by it). I'll try it again, since you seem to have a good sense of what I'm looking for, heh.

Princess Tutu sounds very good; I think I'll like that a lot. Thanks! :D

Sister complex part is just a gag used as humour here and there. There is no actual romance between siblings so don't worry about that.
As for fan service, i can't recall any fan service whatsoever. At least no ecchi fan service. Cause it does have its "cute girl" moment but that's about it, not so prominent either.

I pondered to suggest an anime for a while, however that anime best be watched going in blind - no reading reviews, no asking questions beforehand, and such - because going in blind it has a good chance to be a really wild ride. Reading about it beforehand has a just as good chance to influence your experience/perception strongly.
If you can bring up such self-discipline, watching it in original-airing-manner might be even better - watching one episode, and then one week of waiting, wondering, pondering, ... hoping/fearing ...

It does have this :
Exploration/discovery/conflict/intrigue/action, preferably in a fantasy environment (I quite like the popular sent-to-a-parallel-world setup)
and then also some bonus attributes.

However, things not or maybe-not along your request :
- "fanservice": no, imo. not. Given, sometimes the girls are in costumes showing skin (Magical Girls, after all, kind of), and sexuality/ attraction/ love may or may not be subject here or there and subsequently be represented visually, but still : no. not for "fanservice" reasons.
- It definitely is "world of the week", for the most part/ first 9 or so episodes.
- Combine that with "I want a story I can comprehend" (your profile, last week or so) … no, you can not.
At least not as long as it is "world of the week", and even once it is finished, it is open for debate what exactly was going on.
And that is actually what makes it better/ good. This show puts you (the audience) in the driver seat.

Again, try just trusting me, and go in blind.
Now go and watch Flip Flappers (it's only 13 episodes)
And do not ask if there's romance.

(crunchyroll/MAL-streaming has it, but not for me, not in Germany :| )

--------------------

PS - about a specific anime being "feminist", not merely acceptable, but positively so, resp. empowering, you can take inspiritaion from the "Anime Relations" list of this club, though it might be a little biased in few cases (eg. club founder grew up with and LOVES Sailor Moon, iirc.).

reverse-harem–sounding synopsis

There is nothing like that in the first half of the series I watched ("my" second DVD set was never sent, the buyer happily left with the money -_-). Being the niece of someone who happens to rent rooms to three boys of the same age/school only led the heroine to a certain surprise: after all, she wasn't informed of it before her first day in. Oh, and one of the guy having quite a sexually perverted mind, I confess he made a move in the first episode. IT ALL STOPS THERE. ;)
I doubt the second half could go into this territory with all the characters having set their mind on specific objectives. Also, Adachi is not the type of author to fall into those traps.

About Escaflowne: just check how many threads asking for the same thing exist. And count how many cite the show like you against how many have no idea of what the series is when someone tries to suggest it to them. Even worse: it's often rejected because a few bad reasons ("I don't like mecha" like this was a genre defining the story,
Someone even tried to counter-argument my proposition a few days ago because the end is supposedly bad, unwelcomed and doesn't make sense (my idea of it being the usual "formative first love" story supposedly false).

Oh, if you are still reading, I don't know if it was already proposed but I would like to nominate the scifi love story Macross (as a TV series) and Macross ~ Do you remember Love? as a movie (alternate version of the TV series focusing the story on the main characters involved in the love intrigue in a entirely remade andsumptuous animation, well worth watching for lovers of the show and others). Note: the movie being more focused, it lacks the lightness the show is able to provide.
