This is just a PSA for all the comments about incest, Hanabi and Narumi-sensei aren't actually siblings. She just calls him that because they're close family friends since childhood.

I'm surprised at how many thought she was his sister - when there was absolutely no further hint in that direction. Must be anime beginners that think this. I don't speak Japanese (too lazy too learn and subs are just fine) but I have watched anime with subs for a long time now.

And I always thought it was just some childhood friend that was a lot older. (Friend of the family or neighbor.) Doesn't this happen frequently that some older boys get called "onii-chan" (well at least -san - to be more polite) by younger girls that aren't their sister - if they aren't old enough to be called oji-san or something like that?

This was explained pretty obviously in the first episode so you can't have paid much attention if you missed that

Though it'd have been even better if they were blood-related anyway so idk what there'd be to complain about even if you did misunderstand things

Aren't they distant siblings, at least? That's the impression I got, anyway.

Nope, just family friends. They only explicitly say it once in like the first episode, and afterwards it's still pretty easy to infer, but people still miss that detail.

Nope, not even related whatsoever. Their closeness will make a little more sense later on if they show perspective from Narumi-sensei.

The fact that this post had to be made in the first place baffles me, either people are too young and can't put 2 and 2 together to make 4 or are just plain stupid.

Yeah I've seen it where usually younger kids call teens-young adults Onii-san/Onee-san, and middle aged men are usually called Oji san I think. And since they have been friends since Hanabi was a young girl the nickname Onii-chan has stayed since then.

But anyone who isn't an idiot can clearly see they aren't related, I get the confusion early in the first episode but later they even talk about how Hanabi doesn't have a dad and only has a mum, and vice versa for Onii-chan (Idk his name).

I'm assuming that it's mostly young teens that either haven't seen much anime hence are grossly misunderstanding the situation or just can't be bothered with delving into obvious details.

It never even occurred to me that someone could infer that the unrequited love was incestuous in any way till I came to the anime's forum.

I thought they were siblings but from different father. They could be more clear in my opinion.

how can you be a distant sibling? What even is that?

I think I meant to say 'distant relatives', if that changes anything. Maybe Hanabi's mother had a sister who is the mother of Narumi-sensei, or something to that extent. Although, that's probably still pretty close relatives...

I mean, not to stroke my own ego, but I figured it out about half-way through the first episode.

Still, I can see how it may cause confusion since it seems really unintuitive to use sibling titles for friends of the opposite sex. Yeah, guys will call each other "bro" often, but girls wouldn't usually call their male friends "bro." Neither would guys call their female friends "sis." That's just not a good way to refer to people, especially when they're not even present.

Seems like an ambiguity that should not exist. Especially when you have anime where girls are actually in love with their real brothers, i.e. Fate/Kaleid.

They aren't related at all. I'm surprised so many people think they are related. The subs should have written a note on something, I am kinda annoyed by this.

It should have been very obvious. I noticed it like 1:30 minutes into the anime.
When he said "I've known you since you were little after all".
You don't say that to your siblings.
よろしく!
