So far, this anime in my opinion is really good! Being a competitive figure skater myself, I really like this! Everything is pretty acurate! The terminology for the different jumps and the scoring system (technical and artistical) are pretty on point! Although, it could do with a little less fanservice...😉 (I actually like most of the fanservice...)

I actually didn't think this anime was going to get as much love as it has since I don't think a lot of people know about the figure skating world as much they do about hockey, football, or some other televised sport. It makes me happy this anime has been getting some really positive feedback! Anyway, my question to all Yuri!!! on Ice fans is: how many of you actually figure skate (competitively or for fun) and what are your thoughts on the anime? If you don't figure skate, what do you think about the sport from watching this? Love to know your thoughts!!!

Me! I skated for about 6 years, but I've quit now.
Because it's getting really expensive, especially getting a good coach.
(So yes i figure skate competitively) My fav figure skaters are Yuzuru Hanyu (ofc), Mao Asada, and Yuna Kim (mostly the ones that won gold and silver in sochi olympics)
I love this anime because it reminds me of the old days lol. And it helps me remember all the names of the skating moves that i forgot.

That's great! This is I think about my 12th year skating and I agree it is quite pricey, but I love it! What level did you compete at? My favorite skaters are Yuzuru Hanyu (Japan) as well along with Gracie Gold (USA) and Yulia Lipintskaya.

Yeah it's really pricey here in my country. I started ice skating in elementary school then i quit around middle school third year.
I think i was on level freestyle 1 or 2. Didn't get that far..
WOW 12 years?!! what level are you on? you must be an expert already.. :D

I started skating when I was around 5 or 6 and its just kept on going. If you did Freestyle 1 or 2, you must've competed in ISI. I compete IJS and just finished my Intermediate season. I'm thinking about moving up to either Novice or Junior this year. I wouldn't say expert, but thanks!

I did briefly. I just skated for fun. I ended up gaining a lot of weight which made it hard, but this year I lost a lot of weight and like magic Yuri on Ice came out. I think it might be a sign. :P And now my friends want to learn all the basic tricks I know.

Oh I loved it. I noticed I fell so much less than even walking. I am autistic and I fall down a lot. I am very clumsy. But on Ice I seem to never fall... except when I jump. I guess you can say I identify with Yuri's issues at this point. But I lost 10 pounds just in the last month. now down to 135. Last year I was 185. I am also getting much more flexible.

I am totally planning on skating again. I feel so happy. I am getting much stronger again... it really sucked getting sick like that last year. I think Yuri on Ice came out at the right time for me. Maybe that is why I am rating it 10/10. It is also reminding me of my relationship with my husband. My husband is super encouraging like Victor. Totally confidence boosting. Even if sometimes he makes me cry when he attempts to encourage me the wrong way. :P

Well I can ice-skate in terms of staying up and moving forward, but not really jumps and spins so not figure skate really. I usually go skating couple times every winter, though last year I somehow didn't- I have became too lazy :P I'll this year though, YOI kinda makes me want to ice-skate even if it's not really comparable to my skating XD

In terms of liking figure skating, I don't follow it, but I watch it sometimes on tv. Quite rarely though, but it's enjoyable. Closer to dancing and performing than most sports, so it's quite pretty to watch even if you don't get technical stuff. Same with performances in YOI. The show has prompted me to check some IRL performances of youtube also. Then, I have friend who follows it more as sport (doesn't figure skate herself though) and she sometimes comments on technical stuff like Yuri's Ina Bauer when we talk about the series.

That's awesome! Any skating is really fun! I agree figure skating is very close to dancing and such, in fact, whenever I'm out in public in my skating costumes I'm always asked if I'm either a dancer or a gymnast. It's the body type as well! ;-).

i don't skate competitively because it is one of the most expensive sports imo and the ice rink is an hour away. however it was a large part of my childhood as i lived in russia and basically everyone could skate since there were practically free outdoor ice rinks. it's one of my favorite activities and i wish that the ice rink was closer/cheaper :) ice skating is a lot of fun but figure skating is a bit too late to get into seriously at my age haha

In my state Ice Rinks are literally non existent in my state so yeah, nope. It seems fun though and reallly hard.

I've always had this image in my head that if I jumped in the air and landed roughly onto the ice the blades may break and sink into my foot, leaving me bleeding.

I'm pretty sure that that's not how it works though and skates were made to be a whole lot safer..

I figure skated for about 2 or 3 years when I was younger (much younger, like pre-teens) and did one show but I quit right around the time we started learning jumps. I kinda just lost touch with the sport and it became tedious at that point lol (I blame my edgy hormones tbh), but now YoI is making me wanna get back into at least casual skating. Would at least do that if it weren't for the fact that I'm already spending a lot of money on horseback riding lessons currently.

Yeah I agree! I feel like figure skating is up there in expenses along with horseback riding because of equipment, lessons, ice time, etc. I love figure skating! It's hard at times but it's super fun! And anyone can start figure skating! It doesn't really matter at what age you start unless you were to do really competitive skating you'd want to start younger. But they do have adult skating which is neat!

Oh wow! I absolutely love horseback riding! I feel like Horseback riding is one of the most expensive sports to get in to since you have to pay for the horse, the food, the training, equipment, etc. Casual skating is pretty fun too! Sometimes I just like to do some interpretive skating to my favorite anime music which is really fun!

I did it for maybe 30 minutes when I was like 8 or something. I thought it was super scary because I couldn't keep balance on the skates for the life of me. Then I never wanted to try it again

I'll stick with skiing instead, thank you very much

Skated for 3 years, I had to stop when I broke my arm while ice-skating (broke my left arm three times in a row, however not all because of iceskating). Since childhood I've always watched tournaments on TV, but I'm mostly interested in couples tournaments.

Ever since I saw the Disney Movie "Ice Princess" when I was younger I've been really loving figure skating. Unfortunately, I live in a country where there is no ice skating rink (We're a really hot country) so I could never really try/practice but everytime I was abroad and had a chance I'd try skating and fail really bad! haha

I still hope one day I'll be able to at least do basics:)

EDIT: Also, I'd love to watch the competitions, but sadly they rarely appear on tv...

I've always wanted to get into thinks like ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, or really any kind of athletic activity, but due to being from a poor family, living in the middle of nowhere with almost no transportation, I've always been very limited to what I can do >.<; I do hope to try getting into that stuff when I become a bit more independent, also since I plan to move to Sweden to live with my husbando in a few years, I might have a lot of places to dabble in ice skating and other winter sport activities, as well as other types of athletic stuff in general. Anime like this just make me jealous of how much I honestly would have loved to grow up practicing and competing in a sport and how fun it looks. The essence of competition is burned into my soul and things like this and Haikyuu only make it burn hotter >=x All I have are video games to compete in until then ;-;

I used to love ice skating as a kid. Since I live in Sweden, there's always plenty of opportunities to do so during the winter. I even tried out figure skating at some point, but unfortunately I ended up quitting pretty soon. When I was younger I kind of had a bad habit of trying all sorts of different sports, but I always ended up quitting for some reason or other. It's sad, because figure skating in particular is an amazing sport, and watching Yuri on Ice has kind of reminded me of why I got interested in it in the first place.

Thanks to the anime, I actually started following the real world Grand Prix very closely, and I'll definitely be paying my neighbor Finland a visit to catch a glimpse of the World Championships. I also developed a slight obsession for Johnny Weir, which... may or may not be good. >.>' No, but in all honesty, I think he's great (totally fell in love with his interpretation of Poker Face). And he has a delightful personality to boot. -w-
