Why do people judge anime viewers and manga readers?

Something that has always mystified me is that people say not to judge people just because they like something. So why is it that the anime and manga community is one of the most heavily judged groups on the internet and media? Any insight as to why? Can it be fixed, or are we damned to a endless cycle of getting called "cancer" and "weebs"?

Anime was always an obscure hobby. And anime is weird.
Community is to blame as well. Posting those weird gifs, edgy quotes or straight up ecchi/hentai on sites like reddit/9gag/whatever will never clarify the image of the medium.
You shouldn't worry too much. You cannot really fix it. Even trying to will make a Don Quixote out of you. In time you convince one person 20 stupid posts will be made.

IDK, Chinese cartoons are related to either childish or perverted things so you know like... obvious reasons.

Probably Karma since the anime community people are also among the most prejudiced and judgmental ones when it comes to
- people who like 'elitist' series
- people who like ecchi
- people who like moe
- people who enjoy shows with males that talk to each other (aka 'fujoshit')
- old anime
- western movies and TV Series
- western animation
- anyone who dares to care about anything related to social justice
- probably many more things based on what I regularly see in Current Events

Add to that an unhealthy dose of self-deprication ("Anime fans in general are disgusting, sad and pathetic losers except for me so I keep away from others who share that hobby with me") and you know why many people, including anime fans, like to shittalk anime fans.

99% of people who use the term 'weeb' are into anime themselves, I'm pretty sure, for example.
I probably regret this post by now.

What? Since when is it the most judged group on the internet? I mean, maybe you need to research a bit about algorithms "optimizing" (better word: manipulating) your search result and content on social media.

Hey man... OP checked like... two threads. his results have to be pretty accurate. I mean, this is such an NP-complete problem... this is the best heuristic available...

It's all weird if you love something who cares what others think. Even though what I do isn't hurting anyone

Oh no I get that, I just know that it effects others more than it does me.

I don't even think it is one of that. Still, maybe researching about those algorithm manipulating your search results and recommendations on certain sites a bit. Instead of your own search results, statistics are much more valuable.
This is just from personal experience dude, I'm not like searching this up on like google or something. I'm not like fixing search results or something. I'm just talking about people IRL.

Others like who I don't think it does I haven't met anyone I'm close to says anime is affecting them but I do know some anime fans take it too far and become shut ins

But you specifically said 'on the internet and media' in your opening post, not IRL.
Just sayin'.

One of the reasons maybe because people confuse cartoons with anime.(Atleast they do where I am from). And because cartoons are mostly watched by children, people who watch animes are often labelled as childish or immature. To be honest, if you like something you should never be deterred from doing it just because people think its weird or childish.

This demographic is changing slowly. I suggested some of my friends (who looked down upon animes) death note and believe me they were instantly hooked and never belittled animes instead started searching for more animated series. Its all about trying something out before criticising it. And with the ever increasing anime viewers, this 'judgement' is bound to change eventually.

Some people think it's weird and thinks they're a cartoon and would label us fans as childish and immature. That, and the some of the 'extreme' fanbase.

What are you talking about? People judge you cause they don't like you... I was never judged because i watched anime and read manga, and I did it out in the open!

So just face it people don't like YOU. Cause I never had those problems.

I've never been attacked for watching anime directly, however I have had conversations with people where they associate anime with all the negative connotations you're accustomed to hearing. I normally ask them if they've ever sat down and watched a "good" show. And if that doesn't work I just tell them that if South Park or The Simpsons was in Japanese it would be anime haha, they don't know the difference anyway.
