Most of them are around 20-25 minutes long, and honestly I would rather watch a anime with only 10-15 minutes (they could even release it twice a week then) Steven Universe does this and I never felt like anything fell short because of this. So any theories why it is 20 minutes?

Live action tv shows have up to 40+ minute episodes though
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

20-25 minutes is a standard. When they are being shown on TV the time slots are 30 minutes. Any other length would make no sense, plus 20 minutes is a good length.

Anime episodes are just as long as your usual American sitcom episode. 30 min = 24 min show + 6 min commercials. I assume it depends on the time slots in the programme shedule.

I've always thought 20-24 minutes was perfect: you have enough time to put in a decent chunk of story, but the episodes are still short enough that you don't need a large slab of time with which to watch just one or two. They're like chapters in a good novel: balanced to give you enough material without overwhelming you.

Edit: Removed the bit that probably made me sound like a condescending creep.

Important Note: I no longer - in any way, shape, or form - consider myself a moral nihilist (even in my old, convoluted definition of the term). I very much do believe there is such a thing as objective good and evil. In addition, I apologize for any of the posts I've made that are rude, aggressive, or otherwise unbecoming.

I've always striven to walk a path befitting a follower of Christ, and now recognize some of my old comments here as misguided if not outright wrong. If you happen upon them, pray do not let them darken your view of the God I serve. He is kind, even if I, at times, have not been.

Probably because it is easier to fit a 1h block with this format by adding 5-10 mins of advertisement.

Katanagatari has around 50 mins, Detroit Metal City 14 mins, inferno cop 3 mins.

Half hour time slots are the most common (this equates to 24 minute episodes since Japan doesn't allow more than 6 minutes of commercials per half-hour time slot). There are some aired in quarter hour (12 minutes), 1/6 hour (8 minutes), 1/12 hour (3.5 minutes for some reason), and 1/24 hour (2 minutes) time slots, but these generally have lower production values. Luluco is a good one with a shorter time slot and Princess Tutu does a good job with its quarter hour time slot in its second and third cours. My favourite anime Yama no Susume has a quarter hour time slot and it's surprisingly good with this taken into consideration. A sixth hour one cour show can only adapt one volume of manga so most manga companies would not consider this to be enough to truly drag in the viewer and make them want to know what happens next since they wouldn't have much time to attach to the characters. If you don't like long stuff just be glad that the rare 45 minute/ep anime only release episodes monthly since most American shows with the same time slot air weekly or even release as a batch on a platform like Netflix.

Yeah but who says I have time to watch them, I'm can barely keep up with animes knowing that I will have to sit through 20 minutes of dialogue and then maybe 3-5 minutes when there is actually something happening. Also by making episodes shorter they could also save money & working time.

What, how is 20-25 mins long? Western TV-shows are literally twice that normally. Anime episodes are already short by global standards

As for why, well with a 5-minute commercial break in the middle it feats nicely into a 30-minute TV time slot so it's pretty logical

About 20 minutes is not long, lol. It is just perfect for one episode.

Every anime should have the same parameters as Inferno Cop making them closer to perfection.

Maybe Steven Universe has killed enough of your brain cells into thinking that weeb shows are long. And weeb shows aren't even that long compared to Steven Universe or Murican Cartoons. Per episode weeb cartoons might be longer, but Steven Universe plays 2 episodes per time slot. So they are generally on equal terms when it comes to watch hours.

if thats the case then it sounds more like a problem of you just tryna cram as much anime as you can instead of actually just sitting down for a bit to enjoy a show

There are actually quite a few with 10 mins by the way. Only one I know this season is Cheating craft but I'm sure someone can advise you what's good and what's not. I haven't watched many of the shorter ones.

Saiki Kusuo no Ψ Nan is about 5 mins per episode, still ongoing and quite highly rated

I don't think anime episodes are too long but they tend to waste a lot of their time so it can often feel longer than 20 min live action episodes imo.

The primary reason is the traditional TV blocks and so that there is enough content that people might sit through the ads. I mean consistent episode length probably doesn't even make sense from a purely theatrical point of view but it's structured as such due to the TV schedules.

For most animes I feel like could have used their time much better if a episode wasn't that long. Also thanks I will try to check them out once I have finished my other animes

lol? I never heard someone calling 20 mins video duration "long".

If you truly enjoy an anime, you would feel that 20 mins is too short

Because every channel has a time slot for only 30 minutes a whole anime is actually 24 min without the 6 min commercials.

That's an awful idea. I haven't watched SU but I imagine the segmented storytelling allowed individual plots to have as much space as they actually need. You can't just expect anime with completely different sets of priorities to be willing to do the same.

By all means, let's change all anime to micro-length because you and a minority few seem to have the attention span of a goldfish. Since goldfish like bait, this is the reason for this thread isn't it?

Shorter episodes /= saving money/working time... it just means they have to make even more episodes to tell the same story... unless you're expecting them to only tell half a story, in which case, why bother?

Why are we trying to compare anime to American animation episode lengths?
Since you're going there... Game of Thrones NEVER did this and its an awesome show.

OT: Since anime episodes have a variety of lengths (anywhere from a few seconds to 40-45 mins or more) your question is too vague/generalizing and is thus invalid.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

The 20-25 minutes doesn't feel long to me. There are shorting run times (Saki Kusuo is 5 min and MAL's favourite short) and longer ones (Katanagatari is around 50 min). If anything, I'm surprised there aren't longer shows due to some live action shows being around 40.
Sometimes pacing issues are due to having too little source material to adapt. One Piece at one point was I think 1 chapter an episode.
