Besides ruining the imaginary ship that anime viewers always happen to create, I feel like main characters that ARE dense don't impede or stagnate the story.
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen

Yes, we need more Makoto in our lives and everyone knows this to be true.

It's overused at this point and it's a pretty cheap way to keep the source material from ending.

The main problem here is that it's been overused.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

The only genre where this really fits and/or improves the story/setting sometimes are those battle shounen series. Look at luffy or natsu for example..

Makoto, as in School Day's Makoto who was only one of the few not dense main characters to ever walk this realm. Respect.

Dense mcs never further the plot, they have poor characterization most of the time, they're an author's way of not antagonizing the fans, etc.etc.

So yeah, they're pretty bad.

They're especially bad in harems...

We don't want to self insert into a dense character, do we? Every MC need to be Onii-sama level.

Then again, dense MC's offer some comedic value at best

I think people mainly dislike them in harem, where girls show them affection but they act castrated.

The problem isn't so much their density, but their lack of personality. If 'density' is your only defining trait, you don't have much of a personality left.

They are not bad per se, but often it's frustrating having the girls expressing their feelings for the MC and him ignoring them or misunderstanding the situation.

Anyway, while it can be annoying, now I understand that the denseness of a MC is vital to extend a show, and it's necessary for the most harem series.

It is frustrating to watch dense MCs and I have dropped a lot of anime/manga because of them so yes in my opinion it is a bad thing.

Naaaaah, all of my favourite characters are idiots (hence the Dick Gumshoe avatar).
We need more idiot protagonists who just have no clue what the hell is going on.

Dense MCs are born to be an obstacle to every ship.

Well I guess they're a "must have" in a Harem anime, in order to keep the harem together, Just like our fellow Orimura Ichuka from Infinite Stratos. Though there are some main characters that can read the god damn mood, but they're hard to find.

Nah, they're not bad. people just can't accept them as they are mostly over-the-top oblivious.

If they remain dense for the entirety of the series, then yes. If no, then no. I mean if a character starts out dense, learns from his mistakes, grows more mature but takes some time. Then I have no problem with those characters, These kinds of characters are actually really fun to watch. But eh.... That rarely happens.

I thought dense characters would have been more accurate self-inserts for those who are interested in such.

Yes, they are. If such character drives you to the moment when you want to punch them for how oblivious they are, then it is a bad thing.

I hate dense MC's that are completely clueless...It won't stop me from watching the anime though.

Yes, but guys are still central to the harem anime. Without them there's no harem, but when they're dull it renders the whole story silly.
