Mal really has given anime like A certain Magical index A R-17,but it's not that bad,I think they should create a PG 15 rating because a lot of R 17 anime that were not that objectionable should be re rated PG 15

I don't know, does MAL actually decide these ratings? Or are they taken from official given ratings?

The people on mal do, they decide and it's their own rating system

age of 15 and 17 aren't that big of a difference in terms of intellectual understanding right?

Find it weird MAL would give it a age rating of 17 when my DVD of Index has the age rating of 15. But does it really matter? It doesn't probably

Since Japan doesn't really have an age rating system the "official age rating" doesn't exist if the anime isn't licensed. For licensed anime the age rating decided by the licensor. For anime that haven't been licensed MAL basically just pulls a number out of a hat. I think it would cool if MAL did something like Common Sense Media where users could vote on what age an anime is appropriate for and had the user-voted age separate from the license/MAL age rating. I tend to ignore age ratings as they don't tend to be very informative.

It doesn't matter unless you're trying to show it off to kids, and if so you're probably on a list.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

Because age ratings make that big of a difference.

I'm pretty sure people are going to watch/read anything they want, regardless of the age rating.

I think they are going by the American MPAA ratings. I have seen some stuff that's rated R17 that I think should be PG-13 like FMA Brotherhood for example, I think that should be PG-13. Also Pokemon is rated PG (practically G), here in America it's rated Y-7 on TV so I think it should be rated G, yeah it's got some fighting and stuff but it's not brutal or anything, the games are rated E and the stories in them are usually darker than the show.

Though most people don't care about ratings anyway.
I watched a lot of PG-13 stuff when I was in elementary school, I didn't see much R-rated stuff though, I only really started watching R-rated stuff recently because most R-rated stuff I saw being advertised was stupid looking comedies, I didn't realize there was a ton of older R-rated action movies and of course anime out there.

While not anime related I though it was funny right after Deadpool came out and there was tons of parents complaining on Social Media about how inappropriate the movie was, apparently they didn't even know there was a rating system or something, seriously? if you watch anything how do you not know that?

But why? The only rating you should pay attention to is the R+ - Mild Nudity one. Either a show has nudity, boobs, or it doesn't.

MAL's "ratings" are bs anyway for the most part. They need to reassign most of them because about 50-75% of them are wrong.

I've seen some shows they label as "R-rated" that clearly have a primarily teen audience and are targeted towards that demographic, at least from a Japanese perspective. Or "R+" for that matter.

Using MAL's faulty rating system as some kind of bible is stupid, a person on their own can obviously decide whether or not something is appropriate based on content warnings mentioned on sites like IMDB far more easily than MAL's simplistic and frankly, wrongly labeled, rating scale.

It's not that simple. If a show/manga contain a lot of nudity, i.e. it's one of main themes - then it's R-something. If it's only a one or two very short appearances in non-erotic context (bath/shower/hot spring scenes) - then it's still PG-something. Besides, this "flashes" are almost always censored in TV/magazine versions and gets "uncensored" only on DVD/BD/tankobon. There are a lot of old shows that occasionally contains uncovered nipples but otherwise are still pretty PG-14.
Despite how much I'd like to see original Japan ratings, I don't think it would be a good idea. We're not Japanese, we're not in Japan, so it's only natural to use Western system. It's much more common and understandable, while for Japanese system you need to look up Wikipedia or something.
There is such thing as shit taste. Only idiots think that every "work of art" should have the same value.
