He was like "if you've got a hobby like playing piano, and you've kept with it for several years, that's worth putting on your resume. But if your hobby is cosplaying at anime conventions or something, leave that out."
How terrible and insensitive. Opinions?
Should I tell him off? ;3

I'm sorry but I kinda agree with him and that's because I don't like cosplay as a whole.

EDIT: I completely agree with him.

He's kinda right though. How's gonna help you having that on your resume? Unless you want to work at Disneyland dressed as Goofy, I don't see how is beneficial.

It's not really a skill that people would appreciate. It might apply in the case of signing up for an acting job but otherwise nah.

Why would you put either on your resume. No offense, but unless I was hiring for a job that involved either of these, I wouldn't give two shits, and I would actually consider it a negative for the individual to have even included it as they are showing signs of being incapable of assessing what is and is not relevant to the job they are applying for.

I guess that's true. Most people look at cosplaying and thinks it's weird.

"Eww. Why'd you wanna dress up like a character from a show you like and put effort into it? It's much better and cooler to watch sitcoms!"

The world isn't as cool as you.

When it comes to resumes you should be making your resume about what skills you can accomplish. So think about what skills cosplaying contains then write the skills down but you don't have to specify it was cosplaying. That is if your doing a up to date resume (a real one) not copying one from the internet like most people do. So like for example if your cosplaying and often find yourself talking in front of large groups then put that you have skills public speaking in front of an audience.

Pro tip don't ask people in MAL how to get a job most of the people on here are trolls and wouldn't legitly be helpful unless they could use it to make you feel like an idiot or make fun of you. Cosplaying isn't really career worthy yet a resume can be created to make it sound like your an amazing person yet most of MAL most likely doesn't put effort into jobs or they where just handed money by family so they are spoiled.

I have no idea what job are you planning to apply to, but as a general rule, I would leave all my hobbies out of my resume. And I would leave out everything else that I can legally get away with leaving out. Why should I tell it to people who haven't even hired me yet?

If you make the costumes from scratch yourself, then that is worth mentioning if it's relevant to the job. Honestly, employers don't give a fuck if whether you play piano or not. Unless you're applying to something that has anything to do with music.

1) Dexterity is still not relevant to most jobs, however merely playing the piano does not prove this, being good at the piano does to a lesser degree.
2) Finesse? The way you use it is synonymous with dexterity.
3) Commitment? No it doesn't, a hobby is a hobby. It is something you enjoy doing, it really doesn't show commitment at all.

I think his point was that you were going as a character with a bought costume, if you said you made the costume yourself and wore it, it would be different.

He wasn't dissing it, he was saying to not put it on your resume. It makes sense in most cases. Unless you're being hired as a cosplayer or model, why would the business care about your hobby in the first place? It does show commitment; you can list it under "interests" or even "skills."

I think he's correct in this instance. No use putting something there unless it will actually help with the job itself.

Also, it could be a lot worse, he could have said that it isn't a hobby at all. I've seen many of the older folk stating that gaming etc isn't a hobby. I find that way more annoying than someone saying you can't put that on your resume. Even if I was a hardcore gamer spending 4 hours+ every day on gaming, no way would I put that on a resume. You gotta play by society's rules if you need a job.

Not if you're rich though, then you can just do whatever the fuck you want.

That's sad. Often, any time I met someone who's passionate about a certain football/soccer team, they were just investing emotions in something completely meaningless.

Why spend that time watching people kick a ball when you can kick a ball with your friends.
