Well, it's another far shot, but here goes.

I'm looking for a space exploration anime with exploration and/or space fighting (can go without fighting), rather than flying around in charted territories. Essentially, more exploration of the unknown. Not something like Cowboy Bebop. I'm fine with whoever does the exploration. it could be humans exploring space, or humans being explored by aliens.

Looking for modern/new anime art. Also, I don't particularly like mecha, but I'll deal with it if it actually has space exploration.

Extra info:

One anime that qualifies as "space exploration" is Asobi ni Iku yo! (http://myanimelist.net/anime/6166/Asobi_ni_Iku_yo!). This anime has "aliens" exploring humans and I'm fine with that. These "aliens" befriend earth and tell tales of their space exploration adventures as well as a little history of their earlier space exploration methods. The aliens also introduce awesome technology to earth.

Another anime that came close to space exploration was Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu, but this anime focused too much on tragedy and romance, not that it's a bad thing. Aliens were never seen. The only "alien" thing is the ship.

I guess what you're looking for is something like Haiyore! Nyaruko-san? To be honest, there was nothing special in the story at all but it somehow matches with you're description on Asobi ni Iku yo.

Ehh I don't know of really any that would fit that, I mean there are "realistic" ones like Rocket Girls and Planetes, but no aliens. Stratos four technically has aliens but half if not slighty more of the show is on earth. You have Vandread, but it has mecha and the aliens are human. You don't like mecha much but there are a few good Gundams and Macross.

I mean if I give something a 7 its good imo, I rarely give ten's.

Idk your list is sorta hard to make do with. I mean I highly doubt you'ld like it, but to-love-ru is pretty much boy meets alien, but heavy into romance and ecchi.

If you don't mind old shows, look up Captian Harlock and Space Battleship Yamato. Also maybe nadesico and Tenchi, though the last one is more of a space harem show.

I remember that one. There was something about a ship and Goku and the ship blowing up. I know there's some space in Dragon Ball, but on one episode, I remember Vagita flying so god damn fast during a tournament that he touched the "edge of the universe." How scientific...

Love-Ru is so bad. I can't even stand watching the first half of the first episode. I watched the first series, then the "Darkness" one, end up dropping them both because the ecchi is so weird and OUT OF PLACE. It's like ecchi is waiting around every corner. I do favor in-place ecchi like what they did in Asobi ni Iku yo! where they have anti-matter guns and shit, but Love-Ru is just unbearable. And then there's the comedy in Love-Ru...

Planetes I dropped because it's not space exploration, but it's space lolling.

Rocket Girls and Stratos 4, idk. They seem like they only revolve around earth.

Try these ones.
Cobra 2010
Space Adventure Cobra 1982

Cobra 2010 is more refined and sophisticated whilst Cobra 1982 more powerful and straightforward. Both are good though I for one prefer the latter 1982.

probably just go into Cobra 2009 and forward. Can't stand old art and animation.

Lol, my sentiments exactly. I thought about warning you, but then again you could have ended up liking it. ^^"
Might as well tell you about Trava-- space exploration does happen, but there isn't much substance to it (imo).

Probably doesn't suit your wants exactly, but planates was absolutely amazing, it had great character sub-stories, and some really touching parts, best space themed show I've ever watched. (except doctor who of course)

Seconding all of these. Also going to add in http://myanimelist.net/anime/290/Seikai_no_Monshou, but I'm guessing all of these are going to be deemed as 'too old', despite the fact that pretty much all the good space exploration Star Trek type anime are older.

Also going to add in http://myanimelist.net/anime/569/Musekinin_Kanchou_Tylor

and Outlaw Star http://myanimelist.net/anime/400/Outlaw_Star

I think Moretsu Pirates fits too- It's the only 'new' one I can think of. Just came out in 2012.

I hope these help, they explore a little bit of space as well as sometimes the other worlds

Sousei no Aquarion

Rinne no Lagrange (the second season they focus more in space, but the "aliens" also come to earth as well)

Trigun they spend some of their time on a ship in space but mostly it's him being on earth trying to help earth not get destroyed

Jyu Oh Sei-this is a hard one because they were on some sort of planet in space and then were taken to another planet in space but there is some space travel i believe.

Planetes doesn't have space exploration. It is about space, yes.

Vandread - too old
Nadesico - too old
Planet Survival - anime not that old, but art is.
Lost Universe - old art

First 3 are old.

Mouretsu Pirates has some really really good space moments, but it is childish as hell. I don't think anyone died in the whole duration of the anime. Seriously, when you're in space surrounded by a vacuum and there are lasers everywhere...somebody's gotta die. But no one does! So childish...

Macross Frontier went political on my ass, so I dropped it.

Sousei no Aquarion - dropped due to bad plot and childish moments.
Rinne no Lagrange - dropped due to childish main character. "zomg, wanna save everyone, now I got robot so i do it bettur"
Trigun - too far-fetched from what I'm asking for.
Jyu Oh Sei - pretty decent and mind-blowing at the end.

Yeah, but about all of them revolve around god damn...mechas. Who travels in space in a clumsy giant robot? I'd accept small armored humanoid vehicles like in Planetes, but mechas....

I would recommend Sidonia No Kishi, its 3D art is amazing and while there are some mechs, its main focus is space and the lives of the passengers, keep in mind its the AoT of Space >:D
