I've never really watched or read a sports anime/manga before (not counting the random baseball episodes in non-sports series, like in Maison Ikkoku, Samurai Champloo, Cromartie High, or Haruhi), but I notice that a lot of them seem to get a lot of praise. Where would be a good place to start? I'd prefer something short, like a series less than 13 episodes or even a movie (not a movie related to a bigger series that I'd need to watch first to get the movie), or a manga 5 volumes or less.

A short series, huh? It doesn't exist. Sports anime is all about character development.

Over Drive is a good short sports anime compared to the longer ones out there.

it seems like most sports anime are in the 26 episode range at the very least then? Ok then, not much I can do about that obviously, but I don't want something like Prince of Tennis long (178 episodes for a genre I'm not sure about is a bit much after all)

Over Drive looks interesting, didn't know there were anime about biking (I assumed most sports anime were about team based sports like soccer, football, baseball, etc.)

If you want to bite the bullet and just jump into one of the best anime series of all time (which coincidentally happens to also be a sports anime) then I would recommend you check out Touch. The only problem is that it is rather long at 101 episodes.

Otherwise I'd recommend taking a look at Major. The series is broken into 26 episode seasons and if you don't like the first then you can just drop it there. If you do like it then just continue on into 2,3,4, and now 5 which is still getting subbed.

While Boxing is indeed a sport and Hajime no Ippo is an excellent show, I think Ippo probably fits better under a "fighting" classification than "sport".

Ashita no Joe (boxing) - Take the movie Rocky and replace Balboa with Kamina. That's this show.

One Outs- Kaiji/Akagi plus baseball.

The problem is that most sport animes have a lot of character progression, which means a lot of episodes. though you could stick with one season of "Major" (there are 5 and i recommend you to see 'em all) and Eyeshield 21 (American football) is also very good, though it has like 150 episodes and even from then on the manga continues.

Watch Nasu. Both OVA/Movies/whatever they're called. They're both more about psychology and stuff than the sport itself (cycling in this case) though, but if you need something short - it's the best way to start imo.

Ookiku Furikabutte is a rather short baseball anime. It's "only" 25 episodes long.

Second slam dunk! its hilarious although 101 eps and few movies. Buts its one of the great shows that u could care less how long it is once u get started and infact u even want more at the end :1

Over drive would also b a mistake to not watch if u want a short sport anime. Was a favorite of mine

Seconding this, highly recommend that series since it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

Even though it's not short, there is 25 episodes in both of the seasons that are already out, I highly recommend Kuroko's Basketball. I'm not normally a fan of sports, but I started watching this and it's fantastic.

The second season just finished airing last month and I don't think the third season will be out until Next year. :3

But you can always read ahead on the manga since it's ongoing.

If you ever do try Slam Dunk, do it because you think it's funny, not because you want to see the main character progress in any way. The anime pretty much stops right when he starts finally getting good. And there's really not much in the way of character development.

For someone who actually wants to watch the sports and doesn't really care about romance, is Cross Game still a good watch?

It's still a great watch in my opinion (although I am pretty biased because I love the show). The show is more along the lines of a slice of life/comedy with a gradual romance. The baseball action was done pretty well I think but obviously it won't be as intense as Major or other just purely baseball focused anime. If you want a good mix of everything as an intro to sports or whatever, it's perfect.

Free! is a short series. It has 12 episodes, if I remember correctly. It'll have a second season though.

lol and good luck finding a short sports anime 13 episodes or less. Try watching the long ones.

Depends on your preferences. Sports anime can be put into two cateogires: the realistic and the unrealistic. Unrealistic stuff is basically battle manga (I'm exaggerating...) but with sports. Some even name their techniques :P
Realistic ones focus on developments, rivalry, friendship etc etc without turning into shounen-ai

If you don't mind unrealistic stuff just watch kuroko no basket, it's unrealistic as hell and it's long but besides the fact that if they existed in real life they'd be paid more than kobe bryant I don't see how you can not like it.

Major is very very very long but it's appeal lies in it's length since there is lots and lots of development and it's pretty realistic (kinda... atleast not as unrealistic as kuroko or prince of tennis). However I think the writers had the idea of: off-pitch drama = realism.

Haikyuu! is currently airing and is pretty good as well, it's 7 episodes in so you can watch that.
