Dark, Depressing Anime Filled With Despair, No Happy Endings, and Devoid of Light-Hearted Elements

It's that time again, where every few years, I'd ask the members of this board for a recommendation to despair-filled stories devoid of any hope whatsoever. I'm talking about anime that don't grant you a magical reset button like Clannad After Story and Madoka Magica, I'm talking about anime that don't just leave a bittersweet taste like Angel Beats and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, but full-blown despair-filled stories like Aku no Hana, Elfen Lied, Shiki, NGEvangelion, Texhnolyze, and the Bokurano manga (not the more hopeful and light-hearted anime).

Naturally, everything mentioned above have been watched by me. There are a lot more recommendations you have in mind that I've probably watched, so please be sure to give my anime list a quick check using ctrl+f before you drop a title here, thanks. This also includes anime titles that I've dropped - if I dropped them, it's probably because they didn't interest me enough to catch my attention in the first place.

Some suggestions to consider when giving recommendations: I've never been one to catch up with the latest seasons of anime, so I might have missed a lot of recently aired anime that might have been good. Feel free to recommend those as long as they are quality anime. Something lowly-rated or poorly-reviewed like Btooom or Akame ga Kill should be avoided if possible, thank you.

I also dislike shounen tropes a lot. It's why I'm getting tired of the Hunter x Hunter remake because it's filled with boring themes of friendship and other shounen BS. Please refrain from recommending me those kind of series, thank you.

To be fair, I hated it, but mostly because of the elements, which you are looking for. No guarantees, it's difficult to recommend stuff to people who have seen 60+ days of anime.

Noted. Short, but more reasons for sparing time to check it out, I guess.

Mhm, I heard it's a very trippy anime though, much like SELain. Oh well, I'll keep it on my priority list.

The only one I could think of that was so full of despair without any hope was Saikano but you've seen that already.

Maybe check out Freesia (if manga is okay). This was pretty dark and cynic (and mental).

because it's literally the same episode you'll see later in the anime, and watching it will only get you confused.

The backdrop isn't exactly funtimes so I don't know where you got that idea from. This OVA occurs during a period of civil war.

Interesting premise that catches my attention, but the 6.5 MAL rating keeps me distanced... Will put on PTW, but won't be on my priority list.

Oh ho? Well, well, challenge accepted then. I guess I did hear that the anime subverts itself from typical shounen bullshit later down the line. I merely lost the patience to wait that long.

To be fair, I didn't drop the damn thing. It's still on my watching list, after all.

I do agree with you that at the very beginning Hunter was weak and boring.“Why should I watch that crap about 2 little brats.”- that’s what I thought. However, when I saw the whole thing, my opinion changed.

The only thing I would like to add is that there will be plenty of death and near death experiences for Hunter’s heroes. Watch it; you won’t regret it.

Shigurui. Another one of Hiroshi Hamasaki's shows, the director of Texhnolyze. The constantly dark and depressing tone, the direction, cinematography, the way it uses music and sound effects, is very similar to Texhnolyze. Although, it has some very graphic violence, gore and nudity. It's by far the goriest anime I've seen.

Um OP, despair, tragedy, and whatnot, has no meaning it there aren't happy moments as well.

It's the contrast between tragedy, and happiness, that makes the tragic moments, truly tragic/sad.

Drop Kurozuka. It turns into a terrible battle shounen-style thing. The first few episodes hyped me up so much, then the rest was a train wreck. I guess keep going until the wheelchair scene, it was entertaining. There's nothing of value after it though.

Thought of a few others:
Birthday Boy
Fantascope: Tylostoma
Malice@Doll

I get that, but too often in these recommendation threads do I get light-hearted or emotional romance slice-of-life BS like White Album 2 or My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. I guess, to prevent such recs from happening, I went a little overboard with my description, just to be on the safe side.

I don't think so honestly. I would say it makes the MC of the main anime more fascinating in retrospect, but its really just character building. Its a completely different art style and different VAs, no reason to wait on watching it imo

So what are your top recommendations as I assume by now you have watched a great bit? The only things really fitting your category of full on despair to the end is Technolyze and Bokurano manga. Cant think of any others that are no-win like that.

I do recommend Now and Then, Here and There. First half can be kinda of annoying with the MC, but second half picks up with the horrors of war using children soldiers, captive women as sex slaves, etc..

Hard topic to find new recommendations for.

I'll second Gilgamesh. I honestly find in many "tragic" anime, that the plot has persisted in such a way that I'm not even phased by the end. I would say that for Gilgamesh, I was left feeling thoroughly depressed. It is one of the only anime ever that has had that effect on me.

In my opinion, Phantom is not really all that depressing. I guess it fits your criteria, but... I dunno. I didn't feel so depressed watching it. In fact, it's one of the shows I re-watch the most, and I've never come away feeling depressed. However, it's a good show (hence the re-watching).

Sort of sad I can't recommend Mnemosyne cause you've already seen it... Plot aside, the amount of extreme torture the MC deals with is pretty sobering.

The only new thing I can add is Wolf's Rain. I see it's on your plan to watch, so just giving it an extra nudge. I guess, technically, there is hope at the very, very, very, very end, but you could just ignore that part, and the whole thing gets really depressing really fast. I'll just say that even with the tiny bit of hope thrown the audience's way, I still came away feeling pretty hopeless about my future and the fate of the world.

That's all. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Unfortunately, I think tragic, hopeless anime filled with despair are kind of out of fashion at the moment. I couldn't think of anything new that's as good as the one's you've already seen.
