General: Display English translation of anime/manga titles

New
Do you think that this idea is worth implementing?

For the purpose of this suggestion I'll use it purely in the context of anime, however it would be useful to implement it to manga as well. This may be difficult to implement due to the massive amount of anime and manga stored on MAL but I still think it's worth suggesting and I couldn't find any previous suggestions for it.

So on every anime page the alternative titles is displayed, for example with Gintama (first one I saw on the top anime today that had words in Japanese) one of the movies is titled: Gintama Movie: Kanketsu-hen - Yorozuya yo Eien Nare, which has the synonym: Gintama: The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya, Gintama Movie 2. The anime titles within our lists, recommendations, top anime etc have either the English or Japanese title displayed, however what I'm suggesting is that the English title should be displayed on the results for recommendations, top anime, seasonal anime etc for anime that has a purely or partially Japanese title so that it's easier for people who may be new to anime or may not know much Japanese to understand what the title says. Like with the Gintama example above, the original Japanese title would still be displayed however perhaps just underneath or to the side or somewhere like that it could also display the English translation/title.

I think this suggestion would be useful because some people, myself included, may not have the time to flick through each individual anime page to read description and so it helps people make a decision on whether they would like to look into that particular anime some more and ultimately consider watching it. Like for me, I usually just scroll through the recommendations page without looking at each individual anime, mainly because I just read the recommendations for anime that I've actually seen, but people who may not know much Japanese like me would be more likely to read an anime title if the English title was displayed alongside the initial title.

This is quite a basic suggestion and could do with some more development and, as mentioned already, may be quite difficult to implement. But I just think that it would be a useful feature to implement.

Thanks

Mod Edit: Modified title for clarity and/or easier searching.

If there is none then so be it, but most of them have English titles

Oh, I didn't see them, I just used the top search, rather than these arch forum button because I assumed that was what was being mentioned in the thread about how to post a suggestion

Even so it would be useful to implement because then people could see the English title and think it's interesting, rather than having to look at every Japanese titled anime

This is something I've thought about for years, having the ability to switch between the Japanese and English translated names of a series. I feel like MAL used to just have everything in English, but that was so long ago that I really can't remember.

I hate having to battle and find the name of a show on a list, for example, I was looking to update Parasyte -The Maxim-, but I couldn't find it for the life of me. I tried Ctrl+F, thinking I could just search "Para" and it would be right there, but instead the title's name is "Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu". As a site that ensures all users speak and use English, I find it ridiculous that we don't have the ability to switch titles to their more well known English titles.

I am fully aware that a number of series such as No Game No Life, Cowboy Bebop, and One Punch Man are already in English. But something like this shouldn't be too difficult as most titles that aren't in English have English translated titles listed on their pages under "Alternative Titles".

As a site that strictly enforces users to use English, I believe this would be a terrific and helpful feature to help anyone find what they're looking for.

You can search to english titles too, so I fail to see a problem here.

From what I understand, this is a planned feature but it might take quite a while before it will be implemented. Here is a 3-4 years old thread about it: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=490777&show=0

For now your best bet is to use this userscript I guess: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/544-sorted-english-titles-for-mal

I hope this never happen.
And if it will ever happen let me choose if I want it or not.

Kiseijuu sounds a lot better than Parasyte lol.

Because it's easier to have things in English when 90% of the site are English speakers?

That's a bit comforting to read. However, that was a long time ago. They may have dropped the plan/idea altogether.

I think there is a pretty good chance that it will be implemented. Yes, the idea is old, but it's just that back then there was nobody really working on improvements, so it's not like it was outright rejected. Now we have a team that is clearly interested in making the site more popular, and the option to show English titles would obviously be very attractive to many people. So I'm pretty sure that it will happen eventually.

This feature is on our development wish list, though we currently have no timeline for it. When the addition makes sense as part of a larger feature roll-out, we will begin building it. There are a number issues that need to be resolved along with such a feature because a work may be known in two different English titles internationally and in the U.S.

Since the English titles are already available on the page and can be searched by the English title, I don't agree with this. I'm glad to know there's an upcoming development for it though, for those who want it.

The English titles are already avaible on the page, though. What's the big deal?

Besides, there are a lot of anime whose Japanese name is much more well known than the English one. Take Shinsekai Yori, Gintama, AnoHana – when was the last time you heard somebody talk about From The New World, Silver Soul, The Flower We Saw That Day? I am pretty sure that you are much more acquainted with the Japanese names

I don't speak Japanese (and this is an English website) so it's really hard to differentiate or recognize series by their name for me, it would be cool if we had an option to display English translations of the series title (like Attack on Titan, instead of Shingeki no Kyojin) in our lists, or on the website in general.

If it doesn't work on some title, that probably means that the anime doesn't have an English title set yet. Maybe you can try submitting it to the database if that's the case.

@kuchitsu,
Yeah it's not rejected. That's why I said "kinda"
Since it's been years to bring it back but got postponed indefinitely.
@Qatami, If the script doesn't work just use Taiga.

this is a really good site which has lots of good major features but it doesn't really have all the minor features which are actually really helpful too. if we had them, mal would've been so much more popular (i mean i know it's not a matter of the site being popular or not) but yeah.

You seem to have misunderstood. The Japanese titles would still be displayed. The suggestion was to display English titles underneath the original titles so people who know it by a different title can identify it.

I think this is completely fine. I see nothing wrong with it as long as the English titles are official. Though, for appearance purposes I think the font should be gray:

Then no English title should be displayed because the Japanese title would probably be the major title it is known by.

All I want is some sort of toggle feature. Nearly every page has an English title written somewhere, and you can search by the English titles already, so why not add the option to show English titles instead (where applicable)? I'm dyslexic and I don't speak Japanese, so I'm stuck trying to identify most series on my list by some infinitesimal thumbnail when I want to update anything.
